    1. Re: [GAPIKE] 1896 J.C. Garner Visit
    2. Drew, I am not familiar with any of those Garners except the JC Garner himself. He is my GGrandad's (Richard H Garner) brother. He was a year younger than his older brother at the time of the civil war and so Richard went to war in 1863 but John did not. Richard and his father John P. Garner fought in the Carolinas in the last battles of the war. John P. Garner died in 1897 in Alabama so I am interested to see if there is an obituary in Pike Co because he was known so well. John R. Garner

    1. Re: [GAPIKE] 1896 J.C. Garner Visit
    2. The article regarding the JC Garner visit prompted my memory....... I have a Garner line in my family through marriage. My Aunt, Rosebud Garner Allen was born March 28, 1903 to John and Lillie (Britt) Garner. John Garner was the son of Wilson Vandever Garner, born 1830 and died in 1931. He fought with Stonewall Jackson in the War Between the States. His family was originally (from family lore) from North Ga...but he wound up settling near Barnesville, GA (which was then Pike County..now Lamar). He was married twice; nothing is know of his first wife..but his second wife was known as "Granny Merritt." Lore has it that his family left Murray County GA headed out "West" to seek their fortune. Grandpa Garner was born in a covered wagon on route in Kansas. His Father and a Mr. Bead began a general store out there..."Bead and Garner." At the outbreak of the War, Wilson enlisted on the Confederate side. He had one brother, name unknown, who fought with the Yankees. Grandpa Garner said that he recognized his brother once on the battlefield..each waved to the other, but couldn't speak. Nothing further is know about the brother. Grandpa Garner was wounded in his hand. This is noted in his pension application for Confederate Pension. He lived to be 101....I have newpaper clippings from the celebration in Griffin in 1930...plus a family photo which also appeared in the paper of he and his descendants. He held a huge birthday cake embossed with 100 pink candles. Wilson is burried in the city cemetery in Barnesville, GA. His children were: 1. Melinda "Lindy" Garner-married Christopher Columbus "Kit" Virden (lived in Juliette, GA) Children: Magnolia, Zollie Lou, and others 2. John Garner-married Lillie Britt (also of Barnesville) (lived in Jackson, Atlanta, Thomaston and Griffin) one daughter, Rosebud Garner (married Goss D. Allen) 3. Nettie Garner-married Walter "Walt" Sanders (lived in Cedartown, GA) no children 4. William Garner-married Ellen (lived near LaGrange) They had one daughter Lena Kate Garner married Coley Glenn. She was a house Mother for a sorority at LaGrange College. 5. Frances "Fannie" Garner-married ???? Thomas. (lived in Thomaston, GA) Two daughters: Gwendolyn and Gaynelle. 6. Kittie Ree Garner (no children) IF this means anything to anyone out there...let me know. Drew Payne

    1. [GAPIKE] ALERT: A CEMETERY IS BEING DESTROYED
    2. Billie Ford
    3. To Whom it may concern: I am asking for any and every one that lives in the Pike Co area for help in this important matter. I have received word that the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, located on Piedmont Road, Pike/Lamar County is or has been bulldozed and destroyed. One of our ladies doing service as to plotting and listing names for those buried in each cemetery visited this cemetery last month. At that time she found it in a state of destruction. This cemetery is the same one that I have been trying to bring to one's attention as to it being in such a disgraceful shape. I tried at that time to see about a Boy Scout Troup or just any group ,maybe taking it on as a project and cleaning it up and doing repairs. This was to no avail. I live in Missouri and am unable to do what was needed in person. It is against the law to desecrate a burial site and there can be levied a very large fine against any one that has did so. Is there any one out there that can tell me if Mt Pleasant cemetery is or is not in Pike/Lamar Co.? This cemetery is located SE on Piedmont Road about 1/4 mile South of Mt. Zion Church/cemetery, and is on the same side of the road as MT. Zion Church. It is located just a short distance from a bridge or culvert with cement sides. There is a short drive of about 20 ft that one has to park in. There is a cable stretched across the drive at that point. The cemetery is no more than 50 foot from Piedmont road. As I understand it, the stones have been bulldozed in to the trees, broken etc. I am of the understanding this may be a slave cemetery, but that is not confirmed, may be a mixture. This is a deplorable thing to have happen and some one needs to be held responsible. Will some one please check this out. Thank You, Billie Ford. Billie Ford bford@mo-net.com

They lived in Pike County until the late 1850s them moved to Louisiana (that is where I live). I have tried without success to find some other family of this Grandma Jane Ballard Trammel. Perhaps you can help. Thank you for anything you know about this family. I think they may have moved from Putnam Co. to Pike Co. ca 1830. They were married in 1817 in Putnam co. I am looking for her siblings or parents & also looking for her children that may have remained in Pike County, Georgia. Karen Tramel Carlisle, DeRidder La. ktcarlisle@aol.com

    3. Now it's my turn to say thank you. Dawn has been my "genealogy partner" for a couple of years now, and even though we have only met once, I think of her as my true friend. There are several of us who have formed an internet friendship and work on families together with Dawn becoming the "obit queen." If it can be found, she has found it. We have got so good, we research families with whom we're not sure if we are related or not!! But it sure is fun. Now Mary Willie Ballard was my cousin. Her father and my great grandfather were brothers. While I had her death certificate, I did not have her obit. Thank you, Dawn. By the way, Mary Willie died from pellagra. 1. [GAPIKE] SOLOMON BECKHAM
    2. caldw
    3. Solomon G. was named for James Beckham's father Solomon Beckham, a Revolutionary War Soldier who died in Pike County in 1838. There is quite a lot of informtion in a posting on the Pike County USGenWeb Site concerning him. Solomon G. Beckham did have a son born in 1853, but he was not the Solomon G. Beckham in Early County. Rather, he was Solomon Cicero Beckham. He also ended up in Texas with his family and is buried in Shelby Co., TX

    1. Re: [GAPIKE] Rufus K Green 1936
    2. Rhonda- I not aware of any connection. I know his parents are Lafayette Jordan Green and Martha Reeves and his grandparents were Judge Hartford Green(e) and Nancy Ellis. The 'King' may come from the Reeves side, as Martha's father was Sidney King Reeves. DMH
