I have received word that the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, located on Piedmont Road, Pike/Lamar County is or has been bulldozed and destroyed. One of our ladies doing service as to plotting and listing names for those buried in each cemetery visited this cemetery last month. At that time she found it in a state of destruction. This cemetery is the same one that I have been trying to bring to one's attention as to it being in such a disgraceful shape. I tried at that time to see about a Boy Scout Troup or just any group ,maybe taking it on as a project and cleaning it up and doing repairs. This was to no avail. I live in Missouri and am unable to do what was needed in person. It is against the law to desecrate a burial site and there can be levied a very large fine against any one that has did so. Is there any one out there that can tell me if Mt Pleasant cemetery is or is not in Pike/Lamar Co.? This cemetery is located SE on Piedmont Road about 1/4 mile South of Mt. Zion Church/cemetery, and is on the same side of the road as MT. Zion Church. It is located just a short distance from a bridge or culvert with cement sides. There is a short drive of about 20 ft that one has to park in. There is a cable stretched across the drive at that point. The cemetery is no more than 50 foot from Piedmont road. As I understand it, the stones have been bulldozed in to the trees, broken etc. I am of the understanding this may be a slave cemetery, but that is not confirmed, may be a mixture. This is a deplorable thing to have happen and some one needs to be held responsible. Will some one please check this out. Thank You, Billie Ford. Rainy, If you could do the calling for me I would appreciate it . Only if you live close though . Or if you could call the County commissioner and check to see if they know any thing about this being done. If he has no information, maybe you or some one else could call the commissioner of Lamar Co. Thanks, so very much, Billie Ford. Billie (and other interested parties), I looked on the USGS site where some cemeteries are listed with GPS coordinates, but neither Mt. Pleasant or Mt. Zion are listed. Nevertheless, from looking at the map, I suppose this site to be just northwest of the town/community of Piedmont, in the southwestern portion of Lamar County, very close to the Pike County line. Regardless, it seems to me that uncaring individuals will do this sort of thing if they think they will not get caught, or if they are ignorant of the law (but ignorance of the law is not an excuse, correct?). Like you, I live a long way from there, so I would hope that someone in that area might call a county commissioner or someone else to check this out and do something about it if warranted. Pike County Journal Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia, April 1921 Mrs. Mary Ann Huckaby Dead Mrs. Mary Ann Huckaby died early Sunday morning, April 10th at the home of her son, Mr. C.L. Huckaby. She had not been in good health for some weeks, but the fatal illness only lasted a few hours, her death coming as a great shock to her family and friends. Mrs. Huckaby had just passed her 79th birthday and was truly a good woman. She had been a loyal member of the Methodist church for a number of years. The funeral was conducted by her pastor, Rev D. S. Patterson, after which her body was laid to rest in the cemetery at Williamson, beside her devoted husband, who preceded her to the grave years ago. She is survived by two sons, three daughters, several step-children and a number of grandchildren. Two widowed sisters also survive her. We wish to extend our thanks to all who were so kind in helpfulness and sympathy during the short illness and the death of our mother. With words we can't thank you, but with a heart of gratitude we ever cherish the deeds of kindness and words spoken in sympathy during those dark hours. Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Huckaby and family (Transcribed - Dawn M Hill)
