In the western portion of Pike county, a few miles from Molena, Ga., there lives a remarkable negro. His name is Jake Knight. He is remarkable for several reasons, the chief of which is possibly, that he is rich, for some estimate his wealth as high as $30,000. He is a farmer and makes about one hundred bales of cotton each year. He owns his own land, several hundred acres, runs a public gin, has a good home, owns fine stock and cattle and is able to live like a prince. He hires other negroes to work for him and stands for them, just as any white farmer would. He makes them work too, and does not tolerate idleness. It is said that you never see a crowd of negroes collected around his home, as you see them at other negro homes. He has little or nothing to do with politics but is a business man. Any merchant is glad to sell [to] him and he can get any amount of money that he wants from anybody or any banker who knows him. He is polite to white people, and is respected by them. He has a school house on his plantation for the children of his laborers. While he dresses neatly, he does not dress extravagantly at all, and is making money. He is constantly buying lands around him. We are told that his property was worth from $20,000 to $30,000, and he is in all probability by far the richest colored man in Pike county - Barnesville Gazette File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/pike/newspapers/arichneg423nnw.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/gafiles/ File size: 2.0 Kb

I have found them to be generally very helpful to people tracing their roots. Even if all they have is a ledger or list, you might find it helpful. The charge set by the state of Georgia for a certified copy is $10, but you might get a photocopy of the record for $1. Call and ask. So all places that have Wall listed should be Hall. J. R. Hall and wife Sallie were in Bulloch County, Ga. I think Sallie died around 1877 as the 1880 census has a much younger wife with the same kids listed. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [GAPIKE] New Confederate Pension Documents In Online Archives
    2. Lynn Cunningham
    3. >From the Georgia State Archives website: Applications, supporting documentation, and correspondence for indigent or maimed Confederate veterans or indigent widows of Confederate soldiers. These records are from Record Group 058-01-001, Confederate Pensions and Records, Pension Office, Pension Applications. The original Confederate Pension Applications were microfilmed by the Georgia Archives in 1962. After the records were filmed, additional Pension Applications were discovered that had never been filed among the original applications. These records became "Pension Supplement 1" to the Confederate Pension Applications. Still later, additional records were discovered and these became "Pension Supplement 2." This online collection consists of (1) the original Confederate Pension Applications and (2) Pension Supplement 1. Records from Pension Supplement 2 can be viewed in Confederate Pension Application Supplements. Supplement 2 will eventually be merged into this collection. http://cdm.sos.state.ga.us/cdm4/TestApps.php http://cdm.sos.state.ga.us/cdm4/pension.php
