    1. [GAPIKE] Looking for a Ross burial in Pike County
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: harrisbrewing Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.georgia.counties.pike/1522/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello, I am looking for the grave of William A. Ross who according to Census information was born in March of 1860 or 1861. He was a son of Charles Ross and his wife Elizabeth both of with are buried at New Hope Baptist Church. This family doesn't appear in Pike County until the 1900 Census, William A. Ross is living with his parents along with his oldest son Larris (spelled Lauris in the census)He is listed as widowed. On Oct 16, 1900 W. A. Ross married Susie Harris in Pike County, I believe she is Susan E. Harris, daughter of James Pyron Harris and Martha E. Smith, due to their ages they had no children. William A. Ross was alive when his son Larris died on May 2, 1926 as W.A. Ross is listed on the death certificate as the informant. This is also how I learned that his first wife was a Fisher. Larris Ross along some of William other children such as Ernest Ross are also buried at New Hope Church. None of the New Hope Church Transcriptions I have found list William A.! Ross or W. A. Ross his second wife Susie. William A. Ross and Susie E. Ross both appear in the 1920 Pike County Census but I have been unable to locate either in the 1930 Census. I have also not been able to locate a death certificate for either of them. Any information on William A. Ross and either of his wives would be greatly appreciated. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. If you would like to reply to them, please click on the Message Board URL link above and respond on the board.

Atlanta, March 8 - [Special] - The story of last week’s cyclone and the destruction it carried in its path while passing through Pike county, were overlooked until today when a committee came to Atlanta to tell of the loss of life and property and the suffering now existing there. Col. Tom Barrett, who was in the legislature two years ago, was the spokesman for the committee, which had been appointed the day before at a meeting of citizens held at Barnesville. He reports that twelve people were killed outright by the terrible storm, and fifty more received injuries which will prove fatal. Two hundred people were wounded in Pike alone, 120 houses were blown down and 800 people were left homeless. “I have been all over the track of the cyclone, back and forward, and it is almost impossible to picture the rain and the suffering,” said Col Barrett. “I have seen war and men killed and the land filled with lamentations, but there were no women in the war. The cyclone spared no one. It was no respecter of persons. Men, women and children, white and black, were killed and maimed. It came on us in the night about 9 o’clock or a little later. Most folks in the country are in bed at that time. With a horrible roar the storm swooped down on us. You could hear the passing of it for miles. The sky was lit up by lightening so that you could read a newspaper all over the county pretty much. This cyclone seemed like a great mountain of fire doing a round dance across the county. It was revolving furiously and moving ahead at a great rate of speed. Before the unfortunates knew that danger was near, the storm was upon them. Nobody had a chance to get away. It was like war times. You didn’t have time to get behind breastworks or in the bomb-proof just when the danger came. There may have been some pits in the section, but there was no warning to get into them. Houses were caught up in the tornado and sucked right up off the ground or crushed in before the inmates could get out of bed. And when they did run for protection they did not help themselves. The saddest case was that of Miss Annie Hawkins, daughter of Ed Hawkins, a farmer. She was a grown young lady and a lovely young woman. In her alarm she ran to her father. He clasped her in his arms, and just as he did, the house collapsed and they were buried in the debris. She was killed almost outright, and his bones were broken in every part of the body. I helped to take them out. Hawkins was pinioned down by heavy timbers and his child was locked fast in his embrace. He could not release the dead body until we took all the timbers off. A drenching rain followed the cyclone, and this added to the distress, for many of the helpless had to be carried a long distance to shelter. Remember that the path of this storm was a mile wide on the average. I never saw one that was so wide before. The people turned out and worked all night along the path of the storm. Those of us who escaped turned in to assist our neighbors all we could, which was not much. It was pitiable to hear the cries and wails and calls of parents for their children and the cries of the little folks for their fathers and mothers. It was a heart rending night. We carried the wounded for long distances, as I said, and some of them were suffering from broken limbs and mangled bodies. The poor women and children were scantily clad, and they suffered so much from the cold and the rain, to say nothing of the shock and pain. Doctors were few and we just had to do the best we could. The Killed. The killed were: Mrs. Martha Feltz, a widow, at Molena; James McCord, a farmer, and his child; Andrew Levere, a farmer; Miss Annie Hawkins; three negroes on Barker’s place, on Dr. Harp’s place and three in the eastern part of the county. The most of these were killed instantly or lingered only a short time. Levere had his neck broken and some of the others were crushed to death at once. In every instance there were other members of the families who escaped death, but mighty few came out of the storm unhurt. People on either side of the cyclone track thought that their time had come too. The fury of the storm was terrible to behold. The air was filled with a million flying fragments of houses, sheds, churches, fences and trees. These were outlined against the sky under the vivid sheet of lightning. “My home was about a mile from the edge of the storm’s proper path. I thought every minute that my house would be sucked in the whirlpool. That was as alarming almost as the actual sensation of being in the middle of it, I imagine,” said Colonel Barrett. He states that everything has been swept away; that the people are very poor and are in great distress. He says that he went on top of Buzzard’s mountain and from one spot he could trace the storm’s track for almost twenty miles either way. It traveled almost east and west. Help is wanted. The other members of the committee who accompanied Col. Barrett are J.J. Rogers and J.W. Stafford. They called on the gentlemen who are getting up subscriptions here and saw some of the pastors, and requested them to make an appeal for money next Sunday with which to rebuild the churches which were destroyed, eight in number. Six school houses were destroyed. The people of Pike are poor and deserve the charity of their fellow Georgians. They feel that Greenville has got the start of them and that if it is known that they are in distress, that aid will be extended to them cheerfully. Additional Comments: Re: Ed Hawkins and his daughter Daisy Ann. Edwin W. Hawkins was born about 1849 in Pike County. He was married to Susan Harper in Pike County on 16 December 1875. Daisy Ann Hawkins was born about 1878 in Pike County. She was about 15-16 years old when she was killed. August 1st, 1866 Messrs. Editors Telegraph: Pursuant to previous notice, the citizens of this section assembled at the Confederate grave yard this day, which is near Milner, Georgia, for the purpose of paying a suitable tribute of respect to those noble heroic martyrs who shed their blood in defense of Constitutional liberty. Their graves were enclosed, the sod which had been trodden down replaced, &c. There was a number of the fairest of the fair who animated the sterner sex to a discharge of their duty, and furnished them with a sumptuous dinner. All that were present did their duty cheerfully, and proved conclusively by their works that they yet cherished a high regard for those fallen braves whose remains lie mouldering in a distant land far from kindred. There are eighty nine buried there, but from the names of some being defaced and obliterated, I could only make out correctly the names of seventy, which I send you for publication. The purpose of the meeting was to fish and seine the pond. After seining up the pond and returning to the mill, some of the party concluded to quit seining, while others determined to make another haul. At this juncture two young men, Mr. David S. Baker and Mr. Amon Cariker, uncle and nephew concluded to wrestle. They took a fall, which resulted in the uncle, Mr. Barker, throwing the nephew, Mr. Cariker. The fall produced some feeling on the part of Mr. Cariker, and he struck his uncle in the mouth. Mr. Barker returned the blow, and the contest ended by Mr. Cariker saying to his uncle that he would shoot him. He at once crossed the bridge to the gin house, and mounted a mule bareback, saying that he was going to get a gun and shoot Barker. Mr. J.C. Willis begged him to desist, but Cariker rode up to Mr. Josh Hamlet’s, about three-quarters of a mile distance and asked him to lend him a gun to kill a hawk. Mr. Hamlet let him have the gun and he rode back. Mr. J.C. Willis had gone to Mr. Barker and notified him of his life being threatened, and Mr. Cariker was seen coming up with a gun. Mr. Willis started toward Mr. Cariker, with the purpose of preventing the shooting. Mr. Barker ran behind a house nearby and Cariker pursued him. Instead of pursuing him around the house, Cariker proceeded in the opposite direction to meet him. As they were about to meet Barker turned, and our informant thinks Cariker fired as he turned, lodging fifty-odd shot in Barker’s hip and side. Mr. Willis reached Cariker at this time as he had the gun cocked ready to shoot the second time, and prevented the second shot. Mr. Barker was carried to his brother’s residence, and good medical attention and nursing administered until last Sunday morning, when internal mortification took place and death was the result. Members of the Macon Medical Society will attend the services, Dr. J.P. Holmes, president of the society, having notified all members to be present. Dr. Moore practiced medicine and surgery in Macon for more than thirty-five years, having in recent years conducted a private sanitarium on Washington avenue. He served as secretary, vice president and president of the Georgia Medical Society and was an honorary member of the Fellows of the American College of Surgeons. He was one of the first surgeons of the South to resort to the knife in appendicitis, and was the arthur of a number of credible articles on medicine and surgery. Dr. Moore was active in the establishment of Macon Hospital, served on the first medical board and for years on the visiting staff of the institution. Was Confederate Soldier. Dr. Moore was born May 5, 1844, the son of Rev. David H. and Mrs. Susan Callaway Moore. His father was a Baptist minister who served in many Middle Georgia churches. While in Knoxville, Dr. Moore served as worshipful master of the Masonic lodge. While living in Forsyth he was president of the trustees of the Monroe Female College, now Bessie Tift College. He successfully solicited funds in New York and Boston for the rebuilding of the school after a heavy fire loss. He was instrumental in the organization of Mabel White church and a charter member of the Cherokee Heights Baptist church. Members of His Family.
