No matter what facet of life or time you are looking at, there is something for everyone. If you are a genealogist with roots in the Lamar County area, you have hit the Mother Lode! Some of the valuable collections and resources on location are abstracts of census records, original newspapers, obituaries, and probate records for the Lamar, Monroe and Pike County areas. The Museum also has many personal histories, photos, and just odds and ends that will get your genealogical blood racing! Director Shanna English is more than happy to assist people with general look-ups via email or snail mail; all she asks in return is a donation to the Old Jail Museum and Archives. Trust me, this is a small price to pay for the great wealth of material on hand.

    3. Lisa, There are nice motels and dining establishments close by in Griffin. (Because of its close proximity to the Atlanta Motor Speedway you have a larger choice of motels/prices.) And most of the major eating places are there. http://hotelguides.com/georgia/griffin-ga-hotels.html The Pike County courthouse has many records, including marriage, wills, civil war records, delayed birth certificates, etc., located in the probate court. (Note: the probate court closes everyday from 12:00 - 1:00 for lunch.) The Pike County library has some records but most important, it has microfilm of Pike newspapers (1888 to 19?? - I forget how far they go 50's, 60's, 70's ?) The Thomaston/Upson County archives in Thomaston has a section on Pike County, so you may want to visit there. http://home.windstream.net/tuarch/ The old Spalding newspapers are in the courthouse in Griffin, but I am not familiar with their location there. The Spalding/Griffin Library has an extensive genealogy library. http://doc.frrls.net/ The Georgia State Archives are nearby in Morrow, Georgia. Know that they are only open Thursday through Saturday 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. And if you are in Macon, the Washington Memorial Library has one of the greatest genealocigal sections in this part of the state that includes all Georgia counties. http://www.co.bibb.ga.us/library/GH.htm Lynn ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lisa" <mysticvisions@tampabay.rr.com> To: "'GAGenWeb Archives'" <archives@poppet.org>; <gapike@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 09, 2011 7:01 AM Subject: [GAPIKE] Location of genealogical records > Can anyone tell me where the best genealogical records (besides census) > are > for the Pike county/Spalding county.
