When he arrived here he told Marshall Tom Wright that he had had only three meals in a week - the time he had been walking from Jacksonville. He told Mr. Wright how he had run away from school and his home in Mississippi and had gone to Florida. There he got out of money and a job and decided to get back home. When he arrived here he was sick and foot-sore. Mr. Wright and others took an interest in him and paid for his lodging and food and Brother Milford, the Baptist pastor, gave him a suit of clothes. Mr. Wright telegraphed his father who sent money to pay his railway fare home. After his safe arrival at home and under the tender care of his father and mother again, he wrote the following letter: Slate Springs, Miss. April 10, 1926 Dear Mr. Wright and Zebulon, I got home alright and sure was glad of it. I never felt better in all my life. I sure do thank Zebulon and especially Mr. Wright and the Baptist preacher, Mr. Milford. If it was not for the kindness of Mr. Wright I would have been working on the chain gang. The people of Zebulon dont know how I do appreciate them. I have been told that Florida was a good state, but where did they get it? Not in Lakeland nor in Tampa. Zebulon is the best of all and the people of Zebulon and Pike County. Mr. Slade sure was good to me, he dont know just how much I do thank him for what he did for me. My father and mother thanks you too. God will reward you all of Zebulon for your care of His boy. May God help them and take care of them all. Now all bow their heads while I pray: - Our Father who art in heaven, bless Zebulon and its people for what they done for me. I never will get a blessing more sincerely than from Thy name. May God go with me through Thy heart and have mercy on me. Now God go with them and go with me. When the devil gets in my heart and wants me to do wrong wont you drive him out? God knows he will do it. Now may God protect us all. Amen I cant hardly pray but I do my mightiest to. Mr. Wright I will never forget your town. Many thanks to all, may God help you all. >From your truly, Carbon Pittman Slate Springs, Miss. Additional Comments: On the 1930 census, 18 year old Carbon Pittman is living with his parents in Slate Springs, so he would have been about 14 years old at the time of his adventure. He had suspicioned that saws had been smuggled into the jail and had for some time been on watch, so Thursday he found seventeen hack saws in the jail. He thinks he knows the parties who put them in the hands of the prisoners and expects to have them behind bars within a few hours. The fire was discovered about 2 oclock in the morning and was under such headway that nothing could save the building from total destruction. For a while it seemed that the dormitory would also be burned but, as good luck would have it, the wind was not directly toward it and it was saved. The origin of the fire is unknown. It is said that several pupils and teachers had been in the auditorium up til about 9:30 preparing for an entertainment but when they left there was no fire in the stove in the auditorium, where the fire was first seen. The building was a most creditable school house and was probably easily worth, with its equipment, from twelve to fifteen thousand dollars. Besides the building and equipment, several hundreds dollars worth of books belonging to the children, were destroyed. School was re-opened Monday in temporary quarters. Definite plans for a new building have not yet been formulated but it is safe to say that the Concord pupils will have an even a better building than the old one as soon as it can reasonably be built. If there is any one thing more than another [it is] that the Concord people take pride in their school. They do not hesitate to exert their strongest efforts in making their school the very best possible. Lee of the Weaver community tells us of a wonderful hen which he bought the first of last April for forty cents. She is a top-knot Buff Orpington. She was laying when he bought her and laid for some twenty days when she sat and raised a large gang of chickens. When she weaned them she began laying immediately again and then raised another gang of chickens and then went to laying again and laid until about two weeks before Christmas. She then took a holiday until Christmas Day when she went to laying again and has been laying everyday since and the Lord only knows when she will stop. We have many wonderful hens in Pike county but it will be hard for any of them to get ahead of this old sister. The people are attentive and appreciative and such interest on the part of the people is certainly inspiring to the pastor. Fincher church is expecting a great year and it certainly looks as if they will have it, judging from the beginning they have made. They organized an Epworth League last Sunday night, details of which will be published in this paper next week. Keep your eye on Finchers for they are a live bunch. Singing? HB 78 contains cuts to the Georgia State Archives's budget that will likely result in its having to close its doors to the public! The bill has already passed the state House of Representatives and is currently in the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee. The GA Archives is already only open 3 days a week due to previous budget cuts. Please contact your state senator IMMEDIATELY (preferably by phone or snail mail, as emails tend not to have as much impact, but are of course better than nothing!) to ask him/her to please spare the Archives by restoring at least $300,000 to the Archives budget for 2011-2012. Please Friends of Georgia Archives & History website for more information. http://www.fogah.org/ Even if you are not a Georgia resident, please let your voice be heard, especially if you use the Georgia Archives or hire someone to research there for you.
