I bought the book back on the 17th...after our Slade reunion. The pictures are good and gives lots of county insight. How did Rachel get these pictures?/? barbara -----Original Message----- From: gapike-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:gapike-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Lynn Cunningham Sent: Wednesday, June 01, 2011 8:34 PM To: Pike County Subject: [GAPIKE] (no subject) FYI Rachel is a young reporter for the Pike County Journal. There will be a book signing at our local bookstore on June 10th from 4:30 - 6:30. I'm sure this book will be available at all bookstores. Images of America: PIKE COUNTY [Georgia] by Rachel McDaniel Paperback, 200 vintage photographs/128 pages Rachel has put together a fascinating compilation of 200 historic images from the archives and scrapbooks of Pike County. This volume is the newest in the celebrated Arcadia series that presents the history of towns and cities across the United States. Rachel's fine captions for each image--from early agricultural photos to the hanging of Zebulon's first traffic lights in 1990 (well, Pike County's only traffic lights to this day...) make this an excellent and fascinating look at our county. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to GAPIKE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
Pike-Lamar County GaArchives News.....Zebulon Twenty Years Ago July 2, 1885 ************************************************ Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/gafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Lynn Cunningham http://www.genrecords.net/emailregistry/vols/00011.html#0002535 June 26, 2011, 2:00 pm Barnesvile Gazette July 2, 1885 At that time we, in common with the Confederacy, had just pulled through the war, and find ourselves torn to pieces, coming in from the woods where we had been hiding from the Yankees. We find that General Wilsons Troopers have passed along leaving ruin and devastation in his track. It is true he did not burn our houses. But our provisions are all gone. The Government stores are destroyed and our mules carried away. Nothing is left that could be destroyed. Our slaves stalk the streets realizing that they are free, but in the main respectful. A state of consternation close to anarchy prevails. The citizens congregate on the streets and about the square, and wishfully look for the return of the boys from the front, for upon them our hopes for the future much depends. One at the time they come and comfort us much with cheering words. They look tired and sad, but not forlorn, and without some hope for the future. Things getting a little quiet, we begin to plan for food and raiment. Our women, with unexcelled skill and energy, lead off in this dark and difficult necessity (and they carry the heaviest part of the burden today.) You could not buy a spool of thread, paper of needles or box of matches in town. But soon a small traffic is opened up at the brick corner. The merchants would go to market and return same day with their purchases wrapped in an old newspaper or packed in a paper box about 10 by 18 inched long. Other houses soon began to traffic, and we are Zebulon again except a few removals and the sad casualties of the war, which can never be forgotten or repaired. We gather up some old army mules, hire our former slaves as best we can and start out again. And strange to say in a few months of time brings us to look and act somewhat like we did before. Mr. Elijah W. Wells, an old citizen and father of Harry Wells and Mrs. Captain Mitchell and a remarkable man in some particulars, and whose example is worthy to be followed by the young men of today, gathered a small sum from the wreck of a large moneyed estate, commenced business, did the work of the store, and hauled his own goods in a one horse wagon. Of course he made money, and in a few years had accumulated a handsome little fortune. He was systematic and honest in his dealings, was very correct and prompt with his customers. Full of energy and perseverance, was heard to say frequently that he had rather wear out than rust out. A few years of toil brought him to the death he said he wished to die. He fell dead behind his counter while engaged in wrapping some goods he had just sold. -Fred. Lamar-Pike County GaArchives Obituaries.....Shehee, Sherod Beckham May 27, 1885 ************************************************ Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/gafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Lynn Cunningham http://www.genrecords.net/emailregistry/vols/00011.html#0002535 June 23, 2011, 11:48 pm Barnesville Gazette, Thursday, June 4, 1885 Sherod B. Shehee Dead. Stewartville, June 1st. Death has again invaded our community and the soul of Sherod Beckham Shehee took its flight to the God who made it. Sherod B. Shehee was born in Washington county Georgia the 9th of August 1802. At the age of ten he lost his father which was a great blow to his mother as young Sherod was inclined to be a little wild and his mother expected to have some trouble in managing him. There were several children but Sherod being the youngest was petted considerably and consequently somewhat spoiled. His mother though being a woman of strong and determined will succeeded better than she at first anticipated. Sherod dearly loved his mother or mamma as he called her and this went far towards keeping under subjection his wild impulses. About this time the name of Carlisle P. Behman as a school teacher was a terror to all the wild boys of the state. Sherods mother thought this the proper place for him and so informed him. He made no objection so he was packed up and started off but never reached his destination. The more he thought of it and the closer he got the bigger the bugaboo, till he turned in despair and went back home and told his mother she might kill him but she couldnt make him go to Behman. She put him between the plow handles and there he remained greatly against his will till his twentieth year when he married. So you see his education was quite limited as he refused to take advantage of his opportunities. He however had a very good chance to learn mathematics as his oldest brother was a civil engineer for a number of years and he took young Sherod with him as chain bearer. He has been all through Okefenokee Swamp and Southern Georgia while there was not much there except Indians, alligators and snakes. The cold chills have shaken me many times while listening to him tell of those adventures in those wilds. I must be pointed and short and only relate a few facts connected with his life as Dr. Blackburn will give in a few days, a full sketch of his life which will be amusing as well as instructing and interesting. Mr. Shehee was married in 1822 in his twentieth year to Miss Henrietta Collins, one of the first families in Washington Co. She was only seventeen at the time of her marriage. She was a beautiful girl, highly educated and greatly beloved by all who knew her. She was said to be a Christian from her cradle. She was certainly greatly devoted to her husband, for she left a home of ease and affluence to move with him to Pike county and live in a log hut with a dirt floor and that too in a perfect wilderness. They settled near Bluff Springs and used water from it. There was not a stick amiss and the country was full of bears, deer and turkeys. This suited them as they were great lovers of sport, and had I space I could relate some amusing incidents as told me that occurred at that time. Remember that was in 1822 and they were among the very first settlers. They brought their corn from Jones county and when they wanted meal they had to go back to Jones to mill. In 1823, Billy Williams came over and it was not a great while before he built a little mill in the place that the Slade mill now stands. But it would take too much space to trace the history from that time till now, so I will not attempt it. In 1823, the Judge of Superior Court rode back from Savannah to Zebulon to hold court. Not a solitary soul knew who he was but he made himself known and told his business. He organized the court and commenced business, but the Jury thought he was holding too long and concluded they would adjourn, so they took a goat upstairs turned him loose and told the Judge to consider it adjourned. I think the Judges name was Charlton. Mr. Shehee lived at Bluff Springs six or seven years and then moved on Toblers creek near the Upson line. He lived there about six years and then moved to Barnesville where he lived twenty eight years. There he raised his large family and educated them. There were thirteen children, five boys and eight girls. Four of this number have gone to rest. Nine are still living, four boys and five girls. They are scattered from Florida to Texas and are all good, honest, upright citizens. This fact is largely attributable to their mother as she was a model Christian woman. While Mr. Shehee loved sport and was inclined to be lively. He was above a mean action, upright and honest in all his dealings and a kind and affectionate neighbor. No one ever appealed to him for help that went away empty-handed. He was in good circumstances, always had plenty and to spare. He hated and spurned a penurious man and often said none of his blood ever flowed in the veins of a five cent man. In 1863 he moved to Stewartville where he spent the remainder of his days. He lived to see all his children married and settled in life. There is a large crowd of grand and great grandchildren now. The loss of his negro property was a great blow to his mind. Being raised as he was it was a long time before he could accustom himself to a different regime of things. After the death of his wife five years ago he lost all energy and self respect, but he managed to keep his feet till about two years ago when he gave up completely and took [to] his bed never to rise any more. For two years he was a great burden to Mr. M.V. Shehee and wife and children. The Christian graces are the only things that bore them up in their trials with him. Night and day for two years they devoted all their talents and time to him, an invalid. Where could you find another such family? If they cant get recompensed here I hope they may be in eternity. There is one thing they can go down to their graves with clear consciences. Well done thou good and faithful servant, thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many, enter thou into the joy of the Lord. He died calmly, peaceably and without a struggle on the 27th May 1885 at 5 oclock p.m. He stated to his daughter (Mrs. Joe Smith) the day before his death, that he was ready, willing and anxious to go meet his Henny in heaven. He joined the M.E.C. South at Ebenezer last year and was baptized by Rev. S. Leak. The day after his death the burial services were conducted by Rev. S. Leak in the presence of a large concourse of relatives and friends. He was buried at the family burial ground at Ebenezer church. Thus passed away one of the old landmarks of this county. He was well and favorably known throughout the county. May he rest in peace. Would write more but I have already trespassed enough. Yours truly, Stewardville June 1st, 1885. Pike County GaArchives Marriages.....Weaver, Elizabeth Leone - Allen, Charles Bryant December 24, 1920 ************************************************ Copyright. Allen of Vega, which was solemnized Friday, December 24, 1920, at the home of the brides parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.S. Weaver, at 2:30 oclock. Only the immediate family and relatives and a number of close personal friends witnessed the ceremony, which was performed by Rev. J.D. Milton of Atlanta. The parlor showed the touch of artistic hands, being decorated by Mr. Wiley Mitchell of Zebulon. An improvised alter of southern smilax, holly, ferns and Christmas decorations furnished an attractive background. Mrs. A.J. Bush, cousin of the bride, beautifully rendered the song, I Love You Truly, and wedding march also. At the first notes of the march, Mr. John H. Buchanan and bride of the day before, preceded the bridal party from a near-by entrance to the alter, followed by the bride and groom. The parlor was made dark and beautifully lit up by waxed candles making a lovely scene. The bride was dressed in a beautiful suit and blouse of Midnight blue and other accessories to match. She wore a corsage of cream and pink rose buds with fern combined. Miss Weaver will be greatly missed in her home and community, being loved and admired by all who knew her. Mr. Allen is a splendid young man of high character and has numbers of friends and relatives in Pike and vicinity, he having attended A. & M. College for some time. Mr. and Mrs. Allen were entertained at the brides home at an elegant supper. The bride and groom were honored with a number of receptions during the Christmas holidays by friends and relatives. The many beautiful gifts of cut glass and silver and numbers of lovely and useful gifts bespoke of the popularity of the young couple. They will make their home at Vega, where Mr. Allen will engage in farming in the future. - A Guest File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/pike/vitals/marriages/weaver388nmr.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/gafiles/ File size: 2.6 Kb

Sykes Passes Mrs. W.J. Sykes, one of the beloved women of Lamar county, living in Redbone district passed away Wednesday morning at the family home, after a long illness, running through several years. Her passing was not unexpected, as it was generally known that she was in a critical condition and for quite a while little hope was entertained for her recovery. The funeral will be held from Fredonia church, near Barnesville, today, Thursday, and hosts of friends of Mrs. Sykes and her family will avail themselves of the opportunity of showing their interest and sympathy by attending the service. Mrs. Sykes was about 66 years old and all her life she had lived in this section of the state, where she was known and loved by the people. She was a noble Christian woman, a faithful member of the Baptist church, her membership being the past several years of Mt. Pleasant church, a dutiful wife and mother and an appreciated friend. Her passing will be sincerely mourned by many relatives in Barnesville, and in Lamar and adjoining counties. Collier of Lamar county, and Mrs. Paul Means of Atlanta, two sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Phillips and Mrs. J.C. Harris, three brothers, Sheriff Z.T. Elliott and C.C. Elliott of Lamar county, and Mr. J.W.
