Certainly there were some novel features connected with it that have not accompanied any other connubial union in Georgia. The groom, Ben Howell, a colored sojourner at Pikes Poor Farm near Zebulon, is one hundred and ten years of age, in accordance with the best information, as to when he first visited this continent. His ebony bride, Jane West, has smiled through forty summers, and Saturday made Ben, with the burden of so many years, jump up and pop his heels together after the manner of Old Jim Crow, and assert happy! happy! in the presence of Rev. Wade Alexander, who tied the blissful knot, and a few friends who had gathered to witness the hallowed ceremony. The bride is also a beneficiary of the Poor Farm, and the happy old children will pass there honeymoon and declining years in love, ease and comfort of their rural home, provided by the charity of this county. Additional Comments: Ben Howell (pauper) is listed as 104 years old, born in 1776 in Georgia, on the 1880 Pike County, Georgia census. There is also a female Willie [not Jane] West, age 20, (pauper and blind) in the same household [Poor Farm]. A marriage record for Ben Howell and Willie [no last name listed] was recorded on 29 September 1880 in Pike County. Morgan Bellah, of Barnesville, which occurred yesterday morning. He was a good man and one of the oldest citizens of Pike County. At last accounts his wife was very low, and was not expected to survive him but a few hours. They have lived long and happily together, being eighty odd years old, and ere this, we doubt not, their spirits have been happily re-united in the "bright forever." Pike County GaArchives News.....Robbed While Drunk - A Pike County Farmer Robbed and Beaten by a Negro November 7, 1890 ************************************************ Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/gafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Lynn Cunningham http://www.genrecords.net/emailregistry/vols/00011.html#0002535 September 30, 2011, 3:00 pm The Macon Telegraph November 7, 1890 Griffin, Nov. 6. - [Special.] This morning a farmer named Dock Carden, living about twelve miles from here, in Pike, the adjoining county, presented himself at police headquarters in a bruised and battered condition, and gave the following information: He came to Griffin yesterday to sell cotton and make purchases and made a all- day stay. He invested liberally in all sorts of ware, including a large quantity of John Barleycorn. About 6 oclock he was ready to get into his wagon and drive home, but his liquor had the best of him, and after going a few blocks, being unable to drive, he landed his wagon against an electric light post. A negro came to his assistance and offered to drive him home. His services were accepted and the journey was made for about seven miles in safety. Carden says that in his drunken stupor he fell asleep and did not wake until 1 oclock this morning, when he found his face and shoulders covered with blood and an ugly gash in his head. An investigation revealed that the negro was missing and with him had gone all of the groceries and dry goods with which Cardens wagon was loaded, $55 in money and a fine watch and chain. The police did not take long to locate the negro, who was arrested and lodged in jail. No money or anything was found upon his person that would convict him, but he has made three different statements of his whereabouts last night and all of them have been proven false. His name is Oscar Sims and he is known as a desperate and daring fellow. Officers are now at his home making a search of his house and surroundings. Additional Comments: This is William M. Carden, born 26 March 1848 in Pike County and died 07 October 1910 in Pike County. Thanks for all the hard work you guys do! Peggy Parks Miller In a message dated 9/27/2011 9:41:34 A.M. Central Daylight Time, bsstock@comcast.net writes: The Pike County GenWeb site now has a partial listing of the 1841 Poor School Records, thanks to Stephanie Bradley. More will be added later, so check back periodically. Also, the Georgia Archives has added digital images of the microfilm index cards for county records on microfilm to their virtual vault. I have a link to the Pike County cards on both the resource page and also on the main page to the Pike County site under New Announcements. This resource is wonderful for planning research trips to the Georgia Archives (and also to the courthouse) and can also be used for citation information for those of us who sometimes return home before realizing we forgot to write down that microfilm number. Those of you who are planning trips to the Georgia Archives should be reminded that the facility is only open to the public now on Fridays and Saturdays 8:30 to 5:00. Check their website for holiday closings. They usually close on Saturdays if a holiday falls on Monday. Make use of the GA Archives Virtual Vault. It is a wonderful resource. For instance, indexed digital images for Georgia Death Certificates are in the Virtual Vault 1919-1927. Unindexed images are also available in the Virtual Vault for those 1928-1930 - it just takes a few extra steps to find them. Also, the archives has the certificates 1931-1935 at the facility in original records but not on the internet. Acquiring them at the archives saves you the $25 fee charged at Vital Records since it is a photocopy (30 cents a page) and not a certified copy. Photocopies are adequate for genealogical purposes. Lynn, Sorry it took me so long to answer you. I'm looking for the obituary of my 3rd great grandfather, Joe Elbert McGee, who died between 1878 and 1880, possibly in Pike county, or Spalding county. My grandmother, Louisa, is listed as a widow on the 1880 census for Pike county, with the youngest child listed as one years old. Do you have copies of the two transcription books for sale? Thanks, Judy ________________________________ From: "gapike-request@rootsweb.com" <gapike-request@rootsweb.com> To: gapike@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, June 7, 2011 3:00 AM Subject: GAPIKE Digest, Vol 6, Issue 68 Today's Topics: 1.
