    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: KBucklinlarson Surnames: Story Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.georgia.counties.pike/338.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Since you posted this in the Pike County, Georgia Board, I am assuming there is a connection. I found a John M. Story born about 1802 in the 1850 US Federal Census (of Pike County, GA, p. 5). He was born in North Carolina and is a farmer. His wife is Mary Story (abt 1802) and born in North Carolina. He has seven children: David W Story (abt 1830) born in North Carolina Esther Story (abt 1832) born in North Carolina Benjamin W Story (abt 1834) born in Georgia (all that follow are born in GA) Biddy R (Fem) (abt 1836) Mary C (abt 1839) John S H (abt 1841) Martha A C (abt 1841) The following is just speculation, but since I have a relative who moved from North Carolina to Georgia (same county), it seems reasonable to assume that there is a possibility that John M. Story, or his father, were able to enter and won some land in the Georgia Land Lottery (there are different years between 1800 and 1832) after the Cherokee were removed. 1. [GAPIKE] William Willis
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: KBucklinlarson Surnames: Willis Jenkins Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.georgia.counties.pike/1535/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have the following: William Willis (1784-1853) m. Sally Jenkins (1809-1853) both born in North Carolina Their children (according to 1850 National Census), all born in Georgia: William H Willis (1823- ) m. Clementine/Colatine Cauthen/Cauthern (1825- ) Mary Ann Willis (1825- ) B Willis (1832- ) Francis Willis (1836- ) Mahala Willis (1838- ) Pleasant Willis (1839- ) Y S Willis (1846- ) What I have gathered is the following: William Willis moved with Sally Jenkins' family to Georgia and was able to draw land in the 1820 Cherokee land auction. He appears in the Georgia tax records from then until his death. What I am looking for is any blanks that can be filled in and backed up with documentation. I do not have the parentage of either William or Sally. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. More "Poor School Records" have been contributed by Stephanie Bradley to the Pike County GAGenWeb site, accessible from the main page under ANNOUNCEMENTS and also on the RECORDS ONSITE Page under SCHOOL RECORDS. http://www.ancestrallychallenged.com/~gapike/ This is a good source to help prove parent-child relationships for the non-landowning population. The Georgia State Archives is open Friday and Saturday only - the fewest open hours for any state archives in the United States at this time. Please write, email, or call your Georgia Representative and Senator and ask that the Georgia Archives be returned to a 5 day per week schedule. The following link is for the Picture Book for the Senate http://www.senate.ga.gov/sos/en-US/PictureBook.aspx and a link for the House of Representatives, as well http://www.house.ga.gov/Representatives/en-US/HouseMembersList.aspx. 1. Re: [GAPIKE] Pike County Militia Districts

    3. Although the organized Georgia Militia is dead, the Georgia Militia Districts are very much alive and enter daily into the activities of all of Georgia citizens in anything connected with (1) the territorial jurisdiction of Justice of the Peace Courts; (2) the boundaries of election districts; (3) the return of property for taxation; (4) stock and fence laws; (5) the conveyancing of land in headright Counties; and (6) in all other circumstances specifically referred to in the laws of the Senate as presently codified.   Within these militia districts are census "enumeration districts." So until the 1940 census is indexed by person, you will need to know approximately where your Pike ancestor lived, i.e., militia district and then enumeration district. Pike's enumeration districts will be online soon, also in the archives.
