It has been my experience that Headstones in Pike County did not become Popular until about mid to late 1860’s. You can find a few in the 1850’s but there are not many. I will continue to record burials throughout 2006. I will worry about 2007 when It get here. I would recommend that you check the files about every two of three months. Sorry I could not help but thought I would share what I have learn about the headstones. Larry

    1. Misc. Josephus Coggin Confederate Pension Letters
    2. lynncunningham
    3. Transcribed from the Georgia State Archives web site. While these letters pertain to Josephus Coggin of Pike County, the letter from the Commissioner of Pensions is very informative as to the rules/regulations on pensions for Confederate veterans and thier wives/widows. According to this letter, widows of Confederate veterans who were married to them "after" January 1, 1881 could apply for his pension for the remainder of the year in which he died. Letters found at: http://www.sos.state.ga.us/archives/what_do_we_have/online_records/pensions/searchKeywords.aspx or a shortened version: http://tinyurl.com/8kkyz Office of J.L. Milner, Ordinary of Pike County Zebulon, Georgia March 7th 1929 Hon. Jno. W. Clark, Com. of Pen., Atalnata [sp], Ga. Dear Sir:- Since mailing to you the pension list for Pike County I wish to report that Mr. Josephue [sp] Coggins which is No 1 on the list died March 1st 1929. Yours truly, J.L. Milner Ordinary Office of J.L. Milner, Ordinary of Pike County Zebulon, Georgia April 26, 1929 Hon. Wm. J. Speer, Treas. Atlanta, Ga. Dear Sir: - Enclose [sp] please find check for $50.00 which is refund of deceased pensioner who died March 1st, 1929. Josephus Coggins. I suppose this is all that I have to do to complete this part of the refund pension. Yours very truly, J.L. Milner Ordinary Pike County June 10, 1929 Hon. J.L. Milner, Ordinary of Pike County, Zebulon, Georgia My Dear Judge: I note with your "Death, Removal, and Transfer" report for the Second Quarter you report the death of Josephus Coggins on March 1, 1929, and that he left a widow. If Josephus Coggins was married to this widow prior to January 1, 1881 she is eligible for a pension in her own right for which application should be filed on a white blank provided for the purpose; if he was married to her "after" the above mentioned date, she is entitled to the remainder of the pension due her deceased husband for the year 1929, for which she should make application "each quarter" on a yellow blank like the enclosed. Since Josephus Coggins died before receiving his First Quarter pension, his widow should have filed application for same on a yellow blank, and when this application was approved by this office the fifty dollars could have been paid to her instead of being refunded to the state treasury as was done. Kindly have Mrs. Josephus Coggins file application for the first and second quarter pensions of her deceased husband on the enclosed yellow blanks and return to this office right away, and we will include her First Quarter payment in a warrant which we will draw in a few days, and the Second Quarter will be sent with the regular payment. Thank you for your prompt attention to this, and with kind regards. Yours very truly, John W. Clark Commissioner of Pensions Office of J.L. Milner, Ordinary of Pike County Zebulon, Georgia May 12, 1929 Hon. Jno. W. Clark, Com. of Pensions, Atlanta, Ga. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/hd.2ADE/827.2.1 Message Board Post: Elaine....there is a cemetery adjacent to Shoal Creek Baptist Church right at the intersection of Hollonville road. I believe Bill Russell did the inventory of this cemetery and the names should be listed on the Pike Co. GA GenWEB site. If my memory serves me well, some graves are fairly recent, but I am certain that none of them go back as far as 1827 when the "Church at Flat Rock", later renamed Shoal Creek Baptist Church was established. As a matter of fact, in the deed by Martin Sims to the "Flat Rock Church", he specifically noted that the land he was donating was to be for a "meeting house" and the creek used for the church purposes, but he asked that none of his two acres be used for a "graveyard". Later on another land owner gave another parcel of land to use that is adjacent to these two acres. Bill Russell was kind enough to also send me some pictures of the current grave yard, but none of my ancestors names are there. I'm sorry, I don't have a specific address for you, but I don't think the Shoal Creek Baptist Church is hard to find. I do not live in Georgia. Please let me know if you need other information.
