William, the bright and precious little seven year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Venus Means of Culloden, was run over and instantly killed Saturday afternoon about 4 o'clock in the street just in front of the Citizens Bank. The street and sidewalk were thronged at the time with vehicles and people and many witnessed the awful accident, among them being Chief of Police W. S. Reviere. The little fellow was attempting to cross the street from the direction of the picture show and after watching one car pass ran right into another which was immediately following, was knocked down and probably never knew what hit him, as the lick on the back of the head, received in some way, evidently caused almost instant death. The body was promptly picked up and carried to the office of Dr. C. E. Suggs, but as life had already left the body nothing could be done for the little fellow. For some while it was impossible to identify the little boy. Various reports were out and a number of people anxiously went to see the body, expecting perhaps to identify one of their own loved ones. Finally, Dr. C. H. Willis arrived from his office and immediately recognized the little boy, Mrs. Means, accompanied by her daughter, Ruby, and her little son, having come from Culloden for treatment by Dr. Willis and having been in his office for some time during the afternoon. It was an awful tragedy, particularly for the mother and daughter, but friends responded with every possible help and comfort. Mr. Means was communicated with at Culloden, and as soon as the trip could be made he and Culloden friends arrived. The body was taken in charge by Mr. W. C. Jordan and carried to Culloden at a late hour, the funeral and burial occurring at Culloden Sunday. The Ford car which ran over the little boy belonged to Mr. James Davis and at the time was being driven by Mr. J. A. Avera, both of whom are well known here, living in the Piedmont vicinity. Both expressed their keenest sorrow over the unfortunate accident. Chief Reviere, who saw the accident, states that it was unavoidable, as the car was going about as slowly as it could be driven, and that the little fellow ran right in front of it in his effort to get across the street. The people of the entire city have expressed the deepest sympathy for Mr. Means and family and tendered them every possible help while they were in the city. Additional Comments: William Venus Means, Jr. was born 13 September 1912, the son of William Venus Means, Sr. and Minnie Lee (Clements) Means.
