Ainsworth, Presiding Bishop May 1936 (Page 2) DEDICATED TO THE YOUNG PEOPLE OF THE SENOIA CHARGE AND A FORWARD MOVEMENT IN OUR CHURCES THE PASTOR is greatly indebted to the following: Misses Sue McGee, Evelyn Shell, Doris Shell, Hattie Shell, and Mr. Ray Sewell, for Stenographic Work, and to those who took Ads, all of whom helped to make this Directory possible. And others have been kind, and patient, in helping gather the materials. Since each family connected gets a copy this Booklet should be of great value to the Charge. And your copy, if preserved, will serve as a handy reference for many years. The writer has seen many errors, and could now, print a much nearer perfect copy. But, inspite of the mistakes, we hope you will appreciate this WORK, and that it will greatly aid the Work of the Kingdom. - Pastor (Page 3) Carmel Standing Rock Haralson Senoia METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH, SOUTH N. O. L. Powell, Pastor P.O. Box 14, Senoia, Georgia Phone 64 May, 1936 Dear Church Member: The purpose of this Directory is two fold, First, it should aid in the correcting our Church Rolls. And Second, it will inform our membership about the program of the Church. THE CHURCH ROLLS: You will find some omissions, and some names given wrongly. If your name, or any name in your family is omitted, or written wrongly, will you please advise your pastor? And some names are on Rolls which should not be there, because of bad character or unchristian behavior. Our Churches suffer greatly just here. And quite a few live in other sections, who probably should call for their church membership, so as to keep in touch with the Church and its program. Will you help us clear up our Church Registers? Just drop your pastor a card giving such corrections as should be made. And if you know the address of any family, below which a question mark appears, will you please furnish same to the pastor. INFORMATION: One of our leading laymen said to me, "All we have needed has been information. If our members could be informed about the work of the Church: The Official Boards, the workers, and their duties; and the finances, this would be a much stronger Charge." In this booklet, you will find the Members of the various boards, and the workers in the various fields of Church Activities. Some of these do not have meaning to you, simply because you do not know their duties. And, in fact, it is impracticable for one to know all the duties of all the workers. If each will learn his, or her, duties and then look after his own work, there will (continued on next page) Advertisement at bottom of page: Compliments of: C. P. Daniel's Sons Dealers in General Merchandise Senoia, Ga. (Page 4) be no need for worry about the duties of another. Usually it is the fellow who is not looking after his own work, that is all time trying to look after the other fellow's. In Church work, as in all of life, the fellow who does nothing can furnish you most advice. OBSERVE THE CHURCH IN ACTION: THE BOARD OF STEWARDS: Stewards are nominated by the pastor, and elected by the Quarterly Conference. A steward should be a person of solid piety and had good natural and acquired abilities. The Board of Stewards should organize, electing a chairman, secretary, and treasurer; make estimates of expenses and provisions for the support of the gospel; keep accurate records of same; attend official and quarterly meetings; seek and help the needy and distressed ; inform the preacher of any sick, or any disorderly persons, and promote lay activities among the Laymen, Etc. See 1934 discipline, Paragraphs 221-227. THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES: Trustees are nominated by the pastor, and elected by the Quarterly Conference. The board should organize, electing a chairman, secretary, and treasurer. See 1934 Discipline, Section 27, Paragraphs 229, 233, 235. Their duties are to hold and maintain Church property, and to be present at, and report to, the Quarterly Conference, of which they are members. THE LOCAL BOARD OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION: The board is composed of the Pastor, the General Superintendent, Superintendents of the three divisions, (who are assistants to the general Superintendent), a representative from the Young People, the Missionary Society, the Boards of Stewards, and from one to five members elected from the church at large. This board is to supervise all the Religious Education of the Local Church. They are to hold monthly meetings; look after the literature; the finances; fill all vacancies in the personnel of the Church School; provide for special days and programs, Etc. See Discipline Paragraphs 459-461. Advertisement: Complements of HAISTEN BROTHERS FUNERAL DIRECTORS Griffin, Ga. - - - - - Senoia, Ga. (Page 5) CHAIRMAN OF THE LOCAL BOARD: This is a most important office, and requires a person of sincerity, experience, skill and policy. He is elected by the Board. He is to call meeting regularly; receive reports from the general Superintendent and the superintendents of the three Divisions, and representatives of the various groups in the Church. He should make suggestions concerning courses to be taken, and books to be read. It is also his duty to report to the Quarterly Conference, of which he is a member. THE GENERAL SUPERINTENDENT: This officer is nominated by the pastor, and elected by the Quarterly Conference, annually. He is to superintend the church school work, and the other general officers of the Church School. He presides at the meetings of the general workers' Council. He is the Leader, inspirer and colaborer of his associates. ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENTS: Nominated by the General Superintendent and elected by the Third Quarterly Conference. Each one is to organize and adminster the work of his respective Division and departments intelligenrly and efficently. You are to advise and encourage your teachers and helpers by precept and example. You are chairman of the Council in your Division, and should call meetings of the Council, at which the work should be unified. TEACHERS: In the Adult and Young People's Divisions, the teachers are nominated and elected by the Classes, and confirmed by the Local Board. While in the Children's Division the teachers are nominated by the General Superintendent and elected by the Local Board. A teacher should be present every Sunday. But when Providentially hindered he should notify his assistant in the time for him to prepare to teach. He should acquaint himself with, and make use of the best lesson helps available. He should know, and come into intimate and vital contact with each member of the class, seeking to lend them in a genuine Christian Experience. ASSISTANT TEACHERS: Elected, or confirmed, by the Local Board. About the same should be said, (Advertisement) ALVATON MERC. COMPANY Alvation, Ga. A Complete Line of Reasonably Priced GENERAL MERCHANDISE (page 6) as was said about the teachers. The Assistant should teach as often as once a month, even if the teacher is present. He should be prepared to assist with the lesson at any time. Two are Co-Laborers. THE PRESIDENT: Elected by the Class. The President's attitude toward the class, and Spirit, will determine the progress of the class. He should boost the attendance; co-operate with the teacher; and plan for Class Socials, Etc. SECRETARIES AND TREASURERS; The general Secretary and Treasurer should keep adequate records of the entire School. This matter should be kept in such shape that it may be available at a moment's notice. They are to prepare, use and preserve the records of the Church School. The Secretaries and Treasurers of the class should make a roll of their membership; keep an increasing roll of prospective members; make and preserve weekly records, and report to the general secretary. The secretary should invite at frequent intervals, in person or by postal card, all those on the prospective roll. WE ALL ARE CO-LABORERS TOGETHER IN THE WORK OF THE KINGDOM. Not really...according to a deed in Upson Co GA, he was in Jasper Co before Upson...but, I don't find any documents there for him. He lived and died in Pike Co for the most part. I'm pretty certain he was from VA, born c1797, and that some of those other SMITH's around him were related, possibly brothers...but, nothing with any certainty...I find it hard to believe that a previous judge did not leave a will for me to find. I'm really not even sure where he's buried...I think its Ebenezer Church on Hwy 109/18 in now Lamar Co. What SMITH's are you after? This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: GERMANY, HART, BAILEY, VARNELL Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/hd.2ADE/845.2.1 Message Board Post: John GERMANY was born 1801 GA - died 31 Jan 1862 TX http://www.rootsweb.com/~txtarran/probate/estate073.htm The above web address is for the copious estate records of John GERMANY in which it says, "Petition of John A. HART, Mary E. HART, J. M. BAYLEY, and Nancy L. BALEY (all heirs of John Germany, deceased) that court rescind or amend its order regarding method of payment of one years provisions to Elizabeth C. Germany. Rejected. Filed October 27, 1862" NO other heirs were named. Apparently Elizabeth C. GERMANY was the step-mother of Nancy & Mary as John was not shown with a wife when living with Nancy & her husband on the 1850 Harrison Co Tx census. I still have no clue as to this John Germany's parents or siblings !!! However, I really THINK he is the John GERMANY Jr who married Mary [VARNELL] 19 Aug 1828 in Wilkinson Co MS and was shown in Madison Co MS 1830-1837. Any information on John GERMANY Sr, his wife or children would be deeply appreciated, Kathye
Well, pooh! What do I know? According to everyone's file on Rootsweb, Elizabeth Turrentine's father was James Turrentine, not Samuel. James was married to Catherine Clower. Elizabeth Turrentine and David Boyd had a son named Samuel Turrentine Boyd and I think that's where I got confused. Also, I have in my file, from the Pike County Centennial book, On 1827 tax list for Pike County Captain Shim Thompson's District ...William "Tarentine" 1 poll only, no land listed ...James "Tarentine" 12 ac. Lot 145 and 187 ac. Lot 146, both in First District of Pike Co. on Flint River (Ferry owner?) ...George "Tarentine", 2 polls only James Turrentine's land was right on the Flint River ( Land lots 145 and 146, First District of Pike) and was right across the river from where the Boyds and Tidwells lived in Meriwether (Upper Ninth district). Land Lot 143 in the First District of Pike was won in the 1821 lottery by a William Boyd who, I believe, may have been the son of my Robert Boyd and Rosannah Stewart and, therefore, the brother of David B. Boyd who married Elizabeth Turrentine. On a map, these look like fractional lots cut short by the river. A corner of 143 adjoins 146. I need to get down to Zebulon and look up land records, I guess. Looks like William Boyd may have introduced his baby brother to Elizabeth Turrentine, his neighbor's daughter, and some serious romancing ensued. William later owned several land lots in Meriwether in the same area. Sorry for the error on James, not Samuel Turrentine, being Elizabeth's father.. Judy K in Newnan
Hey, everybody (and Valerie :-). This is Judy Kilgore in Newnan (GA) and I do a weekly genealogy column for The Citizen, a newspaper in Fayetteville. Hope this is not too confusing, but I am doing a series on the Tidwell (and Westmoreland) families who married into the Boyds of Meriwether, Pike, Carroll and Fayette counties. Previously, I did a series on the families buried at Bethany UMC in Fayette County which included some of the Hunts and Rivers presently being discussed. When I pulled up William Judkins Rivers on my database (didn't have a wife or children for him), I discovered he was the son of Dr. John Rivers and Sarah (Sally) Hunt, as was related in a previous message. I have John Rivers as the son of Thomas Rivers and Mary Jones, and Sarah Hunt as the daughter of Judkins Hunt Sr. and Martha Batte. Most of this lineage information came from Mary Harper who has been researching these families for a number of years. Here's the interesting part. In the current Tidwell-Westmoreland series (most info taken from "McCall-Tidwell and Allied Families" by Ettie Tidwell McCall), I am doing the ancestors of Milly Tidwell Boyd, who was the daughter of William Tidwell and Mary Amelia Jones. This week, I did Mary Amelia Jones' ancestry (she is descended from Captain Richard Jones of Virginia) and it included many members of the Batte family of Virginia. Also, now I'm curious as to whether Mary Amelia Jones was related to the Mary Jones who married Thomas Rivers. Mrs. McCall did a lot of genealogy on the female lines of these families, something you don't normally get. If any of these early Virginia lines would help anyone, I would be happy to share what Mrs. McCall has in her book. It may not be 100 percent correct, but it would at least give people a direction to follow. It was written in 1931. Some of the Virginia and other early families included are Tidwell, Westmoreland, Simmons, de Graffenried (which I am aware has been disputed), Tscharner, Needham, Baker, Chancy, Jones, Stratton, Shippey, Batte, Chamberlayne, Rust and Metcalfe. She also has quite a bit on her husband's McCall line. Those of you who have subscriptions to Ancestry's Local and Family Histories database can find Mrs. McCall's book there. The columns I did on the families at Bethany have been temporarily taken offline while we re-do our Web site, but I have most of them on my home computer and will be happy to send them to you privately. I started the Bethany series of columns last February (2005) and they ran through the summer (Harper, Rivers, Lester, Boyds, and related families). I have done a list of the titles (in MS Word) of all the columns by date since 2001 if anyone would like this. Some columns are missing from my home computer (three or four) since I did a have a couple of computer breakdowns over the past five years. The back columns should be available online in the future, but I don't know when that will be. The columns presently online begin with last October. The Tidwell-Westmoreland series began several weeks ago. You may view them at www.thecitizen.com. The genealogy link is down on the left side of the home page. Also, I have a Turrentine connected to my Boyds in Meriwether --- David Boyd, son of Robert Boyd and Rosannah Stewart (of Newberry Co., SC) married Elizabeth Turrentine in 1834 in Pike County. I believe she was the daughter of Samuel Turrentine and a Clower. Would appreciate any background information on the Turrentines and the Clowers. These Rivers, Hunts, etc. were in the First District of Pike County, and my Boyds and the Boyds buried at Bethany were in the Upper Ninth District of Meriwether. The two districts are adjacent to each other, and are very near the First District of Coweta (where Haralson and Senoia are located) and the Western part of Spalding and southern tip of Fayette. Hope this opens some doors for someone. Judy
All indications it appears this William J. (Judkins) Hunt (s/o John Hunt Rivers and Sarah "Sallie" Hunt, Jasper and Pike and Fayette Cos., GA) was the 1st., h/o Lucy W. (Ware) Turrentine (m. 2nd., Edward Newton Huckaby, C.S.A., s/o ???). Lucy W. (Ware) Turrentine was the d/o William Turrentine and Sarah McLendon, prob. of Marion Co., GA. Sarah W. Rivers the only child known of William J. (Judkins) Hunt and Lucy W. (Ware) Turrentine, m. James Patton Ballard, s/o William Barnes Ballard, Sr. and Martha Jane Unity Patton (d/o James Patton and Elizabth Ann Hunt, Jasper and Pike Cos., GA), Greene, Pike and Fayette Cos., GA. Thanks!
Carol -- My husband's family has early ties to Pike County through his Coggin & Pennington lines. They later moved to the Haralson/Senoia area of Coweta Co and tie into -- or are church members with the names you mentioned. Below is what I have in my records. I am indebted to Lynn Cunningham, Dawn Hill, Stephanie Bradley and Larry Childs for their local knowledge and research efforts. I could never do this otherwise living in California. I have a myfamily.com site for Mt Pilgrim Lutheran Church near Haralson, Coweta Co., GA. The Rawls family is extremely connected to that church. Alonzo Hope Rawls and both of his wives, Mary E. "Mollie" Wilson and Myrtice R. Ford are buried there, as Alonzo's parents. Valerie Freeman Tustin, California ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Descendants of Lucy W. Edward Newton Huckaby was Mary Lucy Huckaby's grandfather through his son William. I have that Lucy Terentine was married to William J Rivers in Marion County, Georgia, Jan 20, 1842. Hi Does anyone have access to Marriage Book D records? I am trying to find a date for the marriage of Mary Lucy Huckaby and Guy Burdette. I actually have a xerox of the newspaper clipping with their marriage announcement, but it is not dated and the clipping only states Sunday afternoon. Guy is of Nixon Grove, GA [Coweta Co] and Mary Lucy is "of Pike county." The marriage is not in the Coweta marriage book, so I am hoping they took out their license in Pike Co. I would guess the marriage took place around 1915. Thank you! Valerie Freeman Tustin, CA

Space would not allow us to explain in full the life of this Christian woman, for she was noted in her youth for her sweet disposition and obedience. She has been on her fevered bed for eleven weeks, not a murmer (sic) or complaint was made, but seemed to be perfectly resigned to Gods will. She has been a devoted wife and loving mother and numbers her friends by the score, but it is all over now and her spirit is basking in the sunshine of Gods eternal glory. Mrs. Burdette was twenty-four years of age and had been a member of the Methodist church for many years. She will be greatly missed among us, but blessed thought, we know where to find her. We extend to the bereaved ones our hearts sympathy and point you to Him who said, Blessed are they that mourn for they shall be comforted. She is survived by a husband, one child and a host of relatives. The funeral was conducted by her pastor, Rev. W. A. Maxwell, at the Haralson Baptist church and the remains laid to rest in the Baptist cemetery.
