Charles Henry Gilley was born ca. 1834 in Carrol County, GA. His parents were Willis and Elizabeth Gilley. The family had moved to Paulding County by 1840 and was in Dallas Township for the 1850 census. Charles Gilley enlisted in Co. K of the 60th Georgia Volunteer Infantry on May 10 1862. He was shot and wounded in the Battle of Fredericksburg on Dec 13, 1862. He was capured by the enemy and died in a hospital on Dec. 18, 1862. A letter to his wife, Sarah M., dated December 17, 1862 reads: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ U.S. Hospital Boscobelle December 17th 1862 My Dear Wife, I am now lying in the above named hospital on a stretecher having been wounded in the left leg so severely that amputation was necessary. I am receiving every attention that can possibly be bestowed to alleviate my sufferings and make me comfortable. I receied the fatal shot in the Battle of Fredericksburg on Saturday the 13th inst. If my wound should prove fatal and terminate my career on earth, strive so to live and raise our children in the faith and admonition of the Lord that when your race is run that we may all meet around the throne of God in Heaven. Please to accept my advice that I am now about to give. Should you think it necessary to marry again, be careful to select someone who will treat you and the children with Kindness and be a Father and Husband indeed. What I own have it distributed according to law and retain the balance yourself. Give my love to all my family and friends and tell them I am resigned to the will of God. He willith all things for our good. Solomon P. Murdock has in his possession Eighty One Dollars (81 of my money which you will receive from him and there is now over one month's wages due me besides some clothing money. Gilley, died this morning at 3. o'clock. He was happy and resigned to the will of God. He prayed earnestly for himself, wife, children and relations. Gilley was my ggggrandfather. He is on the 1860 Census in Dallas Township, Paulding County, GA with wife, Sarah, and daughters Mary and Martha. By 1880, Sarah had remaried to Joshua Smith and was living in Milam County, Texas. She died about 1917 in San Saba County, Texas.
