    2. Thanks for the responses...I didn't realize that this was an ongoing newspaper. I recently was reading Edward A Mueller's Perious Journeys: A History of Steamboating on the Chattahoochee, Apalachicola, and Flint Rivers, 1828-1928 and was astonished to find my great great grandfather's name (Lawson Whitfield). He was a night watchman on the steamboat JOHN C CALHOUN the night it caught fire and sank. This was reported in the May 8, 1860 issue of the Columbus Enquirer. pat
