The kind-hearted officer went out to the cemetery and upon seeing the woman he found her to be Mattie PATILLO. He began to question her and found that she was very sick and not drunk, as was supposed. Not wishing to lock her up, Officer NEWSOME hired a hack and sent the woman to her home on First avenue, just above Thirteenth street, at the KIMBROUGH house, a family well known to the police department. It seems that after reaching home the woman continued to get sicker. About midnight she was found to be in a dying condition and medical aid was summoned. After an investigation, it was found that she had taken about twenty-five cents worth of morphine, with suicidal intent, it is thought. Her condition was beyond all human skill and at about 8 o’clock yesterday morning she breathed her last. The KIMBROUGHs stated to an o! fficer that they went out to the cemetery with Mattie PATTILLO, and left her there later on. It is said that her motive for taking the poison was due to despondency brought on by continued sickness.” [From the “Columbus (GA) Enquirer-Sun” newspaper, Sunday, 10 JUL 1898, p. 3.
