Last August one year ago we were called upon to yield to the Reaper our young friend, Homer ALMAND, a promising young man of twenty. One year ago Death claimed another victim, Ellis MOON. The same dreaded invader has again passed through our midst and again he has called a young man: James Laban MURRAH is dead. The summons came last Thursday at noon. The news of his death carries genuine regret throughout the country wherever he was known. His death was a great shock to every one. He had been sick about a week with mumps and was thought to be improving. Thursday he said that he thought he could go to his dinner and not have it brought to his room as heretofore. He made an effort to rise but was suddenly seized with a pain about the heart. Loving hands did for him all that human hands could do, but all to no purpose. Within a few short moments he was dead. “ ' ’Tis the wink of an eye, ‘tis the draught of a breath, From the blossom of health to the paleness of death, From the gilded saloon to the bier and shroud, Like a swift-fleeting meteor, a fast flying cloud, A flash of the lightning, a break of the wave, Man passes from life to his rest in the grave.' “Laban was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. J[ames] P[ickens] HURRAH [sic] and was in his twenty-first year. He leaves, besides his parents, three brothers, Charles, Idas [?], Hest [? – these two names not clear in copy], and two sisters, Minnie and Carrie Lee, to mourn his early death. The funeral exercises took place at the Double Churches seven miles north of the city, at 3 o’clock Friday afternoon and were conducted by Rev. Mr. LIVELY. The interment was made in the family burying grounds near the church. The pall bearers were as follows: T. G. FORTSON, Walter DEAN, Rufus KILGORE, Newell BOWDEN, Cary ALMAND, Andrew VOIGHT. Mr. and Mrs. T[heophilus]. T[heodore] MURRAH; Mrs. G[eorge] N[obles] MURRAH and son Guy [C.]; and Mr. C. P[ink] MURRAH, came down from Chipley, Ga., to be present at the funeral.
