A photo of Sherriff Jesse BEARD appeared in the "Columbus, Ga, Enquirer, Wednesday, 28 JAN 1987, p. A-6. This is in connection with a seven-part series on the 1912 lynching of T. Z. McELHANEY. On p. A-4 on Saturday, 31 JAN 1987, from the same series, appears the following: "Sheriff Jesse Alexander BEARD lived a long life, and was sheriff of Muscogee County until 1928. He was president of the Sheriffs Association of Georgia and left a deep imprint on local law enforcement in Columbus. His photograph hangs in the entrance to the sheriff's department in the Government Center." (Sheriff of Muscogee County; Columbus Chief of Police, 1889-94; Sexton of Linwood Cemetery, 1894-1908; elected sheriff in 1908 and 1912.) Sheriff BEARD is mentioned elsewhere in the course of the narrative, including p. A-11 on Sunday, 25 JAN 1987, which states that on Friday, 05 JUL 1912, he deputized seven men (not named) to stand guard at the jail where T. Z. McELHANEY was being held. Also mentioned in this series are: Deputy Sheriff Cicero A. GIBSON (he appears as a deputy on the 1910 federal census of Muscogee Co, GA), and the following bailiffs: Cary or Cory A/J. ELLISON, John R. BEAHN, Rob L. WILLIS, J. T. DARBY, Chipley BARBER, J. Y. IRVIN, A. REYNOLDS, Benjamin G. "Ben" HAMER, Mr. ROGERS, Mr. WOODALL, and Mason WILDER (of course, these men were employed as officers of the court, rather than by the Sheriff's Department). James PALMER is mentioned as a "county officer." Aaron Brewster LAND (my g-grandfather and one of the four men tried for the death of McELHANEY) is identified on p.
