Does anyone have an answer for Mr. Day? I found the map on your GA RootsWeb page, and I can see 2nd Section. I am wondering if "Lot 15" is the 640 acre section numbered 15 or is it something else? I don't know what the 5th District is? Is that the entire 5 Sections? My 3G grandfather (William Rawls) bought "Lot No. 15" on 17 Nov 1837 [Muscogee County Book H(l) pg 243]. He paid $15 for the land and moved from Crawford County. I don't know when he sold the land. Thank you for your kindness. John Day One Adobe Creek Way Los Altos, CA 94022 johnday3@sbcglobal.net 650-948-0404
5th Dist would be in present day Marion or Chattahoochee. I don't have the land lot map to know where Lot 15 was located....so can't tell you for sure which county it might be in. Since you have the deed copy, why don't you type it up, and share it with everyone. The witnesses, etc might help someone as well. And he probably bought it from the original land lottery winner. Land lot #15 in Land Dist. 5 is in present-day Chattahoochee County, possibly now in the Ft. Benning Reservation. I don't have my land lot map in front of me at the moment, but I will go by the house and get it and scan the pertinent area. As I posted previously, land lot #15 in the Fifth Land District is in present-day Chattahoochee County (created 13 FEB 1854 from parts of Muscogee and Marion Cos.). If you go to the following page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~gachatta/ne.htm <http://www.rootsweb.com/%7Egachatta/ne.htm> (on the Chattahoochee Co. site at USGenWeb), this lot appears on the southeast quadrant map. The number 5 (for Dist. 5) is circled in red in the upper right corner of this quadrant. This map was made between about 1918 (after the establishment of Ft. Benning) and about 1939 (before the expansion of the reseravation to the Talbot and Marion Co. lines). I don't have a current map in front of me, so I don't know whether or not this lot is now on the Ft. Benning Reservation. I believe the "2nd section" is not a division within Land District 5. Rather, I suspect this is Land District 5 in the 2nd section of the area that was divdided and given away in the 1827 GA land lottery to encourage settlement by Whites following the cession of this territory from the Creek Indians to the State of Georgia. Each standard-sized lot contained 202.5 acres (there were some fractional lots). (If I'm mistaken about the "2nd section," could someone please clarify?) Hope this helps, John in TX >----- Original Message ----- >From: John Day > >Mr. Massey >Please excuse this land question but I am trying to identify in Muscogee >County what is the "5th Dist., 2nd Section, Lot No. 15"?
