In the book "City of Progress - A History of Columbus, Georgia" by Margaret Laney Whitehead and Barbara Bogart, there are several sections about a KIRVEN family. In 1963 First Baptist Church received a Bible from a Mrs. Albert WADE and the J. Dupont KIRVEN. The Bible belonged to a Tirza GRAY who married James H. KIRVEN. The Bible had been used by the charter members of First Baptist Church until they could afford to buy their own Bible. First Baptist was organized on February 14, 1829 by 12 people including Margaret GRAY and Thirza GRAY. Mrs. Thirza GRAY KIRVEN was the mother of J. Albert KIRVEN and Richard M. KIRVEN In 1876 J. Albert KIRVEN, then 27 purchased goods from Broad Street merchants who were bankrupt and started KIRVEN's Department store. His son J. Dupont KIRVEN, Sr succeeded his dad J. Albert in running the store. KIRVENS continued being run by family until (this is now from my memory) the 1980's when the stores closed. It was simply to hard to compete with the chain department stores. I can remember going to the downtown store at Christmas time and checking out their windows. They always set up a wonderful Christmas display with animated characters - Santa, elves, people shopping, skating etc. The stop at KIRVENS was always part of my family's Christmas light tour. I've seen several duplicates, but nothing will ever be a good as the original. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Columbus, GA An investment by J. Dupont KIRVEN, Sr., mad possible the birth of the present Blue Cross Plan and operation began on October 15, 1947. The Columbus Convention and Visitors Bureau "The Bureau owes its existence to the foresight and dedication of a Chamber of Commerce Tourist and Convention Committee (formerly the Chamber's Hotel-Motel Committee), chaired by J.D. (Tippy) KIRVEN III." Tippy and his brother Hal were my bosses when I worked for the Columbus Square location of the department store back in the mid 1970's. I'm not saying that the KIRVEN is the same as your KIRVIN but it could be. I looked for ROSEMOND for years then discovered is was ROSAMOND I should have been looking for. The spelling could depend on the location of your line.
