Published by the Atlanta Historical Society in 1895 Page 620 James A. Lewis, who is the head of a house which does perhaps the largest retail dry goods business in the city of Columbus, Ga., was born in Fort Gaines, Early (now Clay) Co., Ga., in the year 1848. He resided in the town of his birth until he was about ten years of age, thence going to Eufaula, Ala., where he remained until 1866, and received the principal part of his education. Soon after coming to Columbus, Ga., Mr. Lewis engaged in clerical work for his uncle, D.D. Gauley, remaining in his employ two years, when he was given an interest in the business, the firm name being Gauley & Lewis. This firm continued the dry goods business until the death of Mr. Gauley, in 1878, at which time Mr. Lewis assumed the entire management and conducted the business alone about three years, after which he had several working partners in the business. Mr. Lewis holds several important positions in the business world of Columbus, being vice-president of the Columbus Savings Bank and a member of the board of directors of the Third National Bank, and of the Columbus and Gulf Navigation Company. In 1879, he was united in marriage to Miss Willie Hood, daughter of Dr. E.C. Hood, a prominent physician of Harris County, Ga. She died in 1871*, leaving as the fruit of that union a daughter, Vernon. In 1888, Mr. Lewis led to the marriage altar Miss Robena Bass of Columbus, Ga., the daughter of John H. Bass, a prominent citizen. This union has been blessed by the birth of four children, viz.: Bass, Fannie E., James A., Jr. and Robert M. A. Lewis, the father of the gentleman who heads this article, was a native of New York City, and came to Georgia in 1840. He was in business for a time at Lumpkin, Stewart Co., Ga., thence moving to Fort Gaines, Ga., where he did business until 1858, when he removed to Eufaula, Ala. In 1876 he came to Columbus, Ga., and was engaged in the shoe business until his decease, which occurred two years later. He had but two children, both of whom survive him, viz.: James A. Lewis, the subject of this sketch, of Columbus, Ga., and Mrs. Fannie S. Shields, wife of W.S. Shields, of Atlanta, Ga. Mr. Lewis is not a member of any church or secret order. *This is the date (1871) given in the biography. I would speculate that either the marriage date is incorrect or the date of death is incorrect. This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 3.0 Kb

All rights reserved. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/copyright.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/gafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Carla Miles captbluegrass@mchsi.com July 23, 2003, 7:56 pm Author: Memoirs of Ga., Vol. II, 1895 Memoirs of Georgia, Vol. II, Atlanta, Ga. Published by the Atlanta Historical Society in 1895 Pages 620-621 Hon. William A. Little, who is probably the leader at the exceptionally fine bar at Columbus, Ga., was born in Talbot County, Ga., Nov. 6, 1839, and is a son of William G. and M.A. (Holt) Little. William G. Holt was born in Edgefield District, S.C. (1808), moved to Georgia in 1829 and settled at Milledgeville, Baldwin Co. He was a physician by profession, having graduated from the old Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pa. He subsequently moved to Wilkinson County, Ga., and represented that county and his district in the House of Representatives and in the State Senate. In 1837 he removed to Talbot County, Ga., where he died in March 1877. He was a son of Thomas Little, of Scotch extraction, a native of South Carolina. Mrs. M.A. (Holt) Little was born in Putnam County, Ga., in 1819, a daughter of William Holt, a native of Virginia, and of English extraction. William A. Little had no brothers and but one sister, now Mrs. Mary L. Bruce. He was taken to Macon, Ga., when ten years of age, but was principally reared and received his earlier education in Talbot County. He attended Franklin College, Athens, Ga., and Oglethorpe University, at Midway, near Milledgeville, Ga., graduating from the latter institution with the degree of Bachelor of Arts, in 1859. He read law from Smith & Pou and was admitted to the bar, and began practice at Talbotton, Ga.; but not being satisfied with his legal education he entered the Law Department of Yale University. He volunteered as a private in July 1861, in the Bibb County Cavalry, Georgia State Troops, and when his term of service had expired, joined Company C of the Third Georgia Cavalry, but was subsequently transferred to Company E. of the Twenty-Ninth Georgia Battalion. In the cavalry of the western army, under Gen. Joseph Henry Wheeler, he participated in all the battles of Bragg’s campaign through Kentucky and Tennessee. He was made a prisoner at New Haven, Ky., and was carried to Louisville, where he was detained for thirty days and then regularly exchanged. During the latter part of the war he was transferred to duty on the Georgia and Florida coasts, and promoted to be a lieutenant of cavalry. He was made a captain a little later, in which position he served until the surrender. When peace was declared he returned to his home in Talbotton and resumed the practice of his profession. In 1866 he was elected county solicitor for Talbot County, and served until 1868, and shortly afterward he was elected assistant secretary of the state senate. He was appointed by Gov. Smith solicitor-general of the Chattahoochee Circuit in 1872, and removed to Columbus. In 1877, when the constitutional convention was called, he was elected as one of the members of that body from the Twenty-fourth district and served with distinction, having been the originator and champion of many of the reforms brought about by that instrument. In 1882 he was elected to the House of Representatives from Muscogee County, and served as chairman of the finance committee, the most important in the body. He was re-elected in 1884, and upon the assembling of that body was chosen speaker. In 1886 he was again elected to the legislature and was again chosen speaker. In September 1891, he was appointed attorney-general of Georgia, and served in that position until October 1892, refusing to become a candidate for the office at the end of his term. Col. Little combines in a rare degree the qualities of a genial gentleman and those of a man of fine business capacity, possessing varied and extensive information, coupled with high integrity. Few men, indeed, have lived so long in political favor and made no enemies. The secret of his life, perhaps, rests in his stanch adherence to principle, and a thorough performance of every official and social duty. He is modest, unselfish and thoroughly amiable in disposition. As a lawyer, he is profound extremely quick of perception, firm, discreet, courteous to the opposition, and a thorough master of the science of the law and precedent. Politically he is a thorough democrat, is a master Mason and a member of the I.O.O.F. In November 1866, Col. Little was happily married to Miss Jennie Dozier, a daughter of Emily (Huff) and John B. Dozier, a prominent planter of Muscogee County. This union has been blessed by the birth of two sons, viz.: William G., who was educated in the public schools of Columbus and at the celebrated Bingham School, North Carolina, and now in business in Columbus; and John D., a prominent young attorney in partnership with his father, in Columbus. He is a graduate from both the literary and the law departments of the University of Georgia, at Athens. This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 5.4 Kb

I am also trying to find where Jimmy Tarlton or Tom Darby are buried. They did Columbus Stockade Blues and one of them are buried in Riverdale. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Wadford, Watford, Hubbard, Haven, Havin Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Xd.2ADE/1325 Message Board Post: I am desperately looking for information regarding my great grandfather, William Henry W(h)adford. My g-grandfather was supposedly born in Alabama on September 15th during the Civil War years and the tale told is that his family may have originally come from the Carolinas to perhaps Newton, Dale County, Alabama, where he may have been born. He was orphaned at a young age when his family may have died in a "plague" possibly on a river(house)boat and the story has it he was discovered alone after a couple of days. He possibly was sent to live with an uncle in Florida, but ran away with cousins when he was a young boy and they ended in Texas with another supposed uncle. I am able to trace him from 1885, Rains County, Texas to Delta County, Colorado where he is buried. The cousins may have been his mothers' family. The first record I can find of him is his marriage to Mary E. Havens on October 25, 1885 in Rains County, Texas where he had worked building Sulpher Springs Road. They had a son, William Henry Whadford Jr. born Oct. 15, 1886 in Sulpher Springs, Hopkins County, Texas and Mary soon died afterwards. My g-grandfather then married Sminthie Ellen Matlock (b. Sept. 4, 1874 Marlin, Falls County, Texas) on Jan. 14, 1889 at Cureo, Dewitt County, Texas. They had six children: Leona Josephine (f) b. Mar. 20, 1890 at Cuero, Dewitt County Bonnie Monroe (m) b. Jan. 15, 1892 at Edna, Jackson County Jessie Winnie (f) b. Sept. 26, 1893 at Edna, Jackson County Maude Belle (f) b. Jun. 26, 1895 at Edna, Jackson County Lillie Mae (f) b. Mar. 5, 1898 at Edna, Jackson County Charles Henry Claude (m) b. Jan. 9, 1902 at Paonia, Delta County, Colorado The found censuses of him are: The 1900 census of Montgomery County, Texas lists: William Henry Whadford, w, m, born-Sept, year-1865 age last birthday is 30 or 39 and he is a logger (possibly in the San Jacinto Range) and his unknown parents were born in Alabama. The census date is June 4th, 1900. The 1910 Delta County, Colorado census lists: William H. Whadford, m, w, age 47 (birthyear? 1863?) and as a survivor (dependent?) of the Civil War and that his father was born in Alabama and his mother was born in Florida. The census date is April 18th, 1910. The 1920 Delta County, Colorado census lists: William H. Whadford, m, w, age 56 (birthyear? 1864) and both his parents were born in North Carolina. The census date is Jan. 24th, 1920. The 1930 Delta County, Colorado census lists: William H. Wadford, m, w, age 66 (birthyear? 1864) and his father was born in South Carolina and his mother was born in Alabama. The census date is April 10th, 1930. Recently, I finally found a census listing a Willie Wadford approximately the same age as my g-grandfather would have been and I'm hoping someone may be able to provide the crack in my brick wall. It is the 1870 census of Shelby County, Hillsboro, P.O., Alabama, page 423. I cannot clearly make out Ms. Wadford's first name and I'm hoping it is recognized. The listings is: Hubbard, James D. age 24, M, W, Farmer b. Alabama. Mollie, age 20, F, W, Keeping house, b. Alabama. Walter R. or B., age 1 , M, W, At Home, b. Alabama. Wadford, ? (possibly Annie or (N)Annie), age 25, F, W, At Home, b. Alabama. Wadford, Willie, age 4, M, W, At Home, b. Alabama. I'm assuming Ms. Wadford is a sister to either James D. or Mollie, but I have found no proof. If you have any information regarding the Wad-Watfords, Havens-ins, Hubbards or recognize this story, please let me know. I would also appreciate any ideas or other contacts. Thank you! Nancy L. Compton

    1. [GAMUSCOGEE] To Jan-RE: website
    2. Hi Jan! Lost your email, so thought I would write you on here since it has to do with genealogy anyway!! I remember you said your mother liked outhouses. A distant cousin of mine has a couple of pictures of them on a yahoo group website called MountainBlessings. You don't have to be a member to see the pictures, but you do in order to post. This group was set up to show the way our ancestors lived: apparel, furniture, dishes, jewelry, etc. We are still looking for a good picture of a moonshine still!! My ancestors made corn likker, but never took pics of their rigs. I told her about your Gone and Almost Forgotten website and she took a look and really liked it. She did ask if she could use your picture of the outhouse from Jonesboro. I told her I would ask you about it. Kathy Owens has really been busy uploading pictures of some old things on that MountainBlessings group site and is not finished yet!! The URL is: groups.yahoo.com/groups/MountainBlessings MountainBlessings is just one of our many group sites. The others are for members only and are mainly for documentatinal purposes: birth and death certs, pics, obits, etc, mainly for the area of Western NC and Upstate SC. We do our talking/queries on MountainKin. They will be having a reunion the first weekend in August, so I will not be able to come to the Clapp meeting. I just love going to the mountains, anyway!! Take care and let me know about the outhouse pic!! Patricia Cantrell Columbus, GA

    3. First, get your immunization together. Find anything you can find on and off-line. http://www.historiccolumbus.com/main.cfm?SID=17 http://www.roadsideamerica.com/attract/GACOLcoke.html Second, see if "City Confidential" has a web site or way to contact them. Send them your "immunization" and don't forget to include either your family history. Bad news type thing. . . company history can change once an "old" administration passes. It doesn't make sense, when the truth makes a better story. I worked for a very large insurance company that has re-written history after the original CEO died. My husbands family was a key force in the companies beginning, among other major changes. 1. [GAMUSCOGEE] GenealogicalDNATesting...why???
    2. Gary W Cooper
    3. In response to anyone questioning why use DNA testing and what are the benefits, I can only share my own experience: For thirty years I had tried to verify whether or not my COOPER line was related to the Fleet COOPER, Sr. line of Sampson County, NC. All I had to go on was family legend that my forefathers migrated to Georgia from North Carolina, and that the name of one of my dad's great uncles was named "Fleet". We had very little paper-trail, and a lot of oral history. No one alive when I started the research had ever even heard of another Fleet COOPER besides Dad's old uncle, and none knew where in NC our line was supposed to have come from. Hiram "Ben" COOPER (COOPER DNA Group Administrator) and I had corresponded over the past few years, and he had helped me a lot with some potential leads, as his paper-trail back to Fleet COOPER, Sr. was very detailed and verifiable. Even before Ben accepted the Group Administrator responsibilities, he and I became two of the initial participants, later Ben's brother, joined the group as an additional "proof test" of our results. Ben and I matched 24 of 25 "markers", and his brother and I matched all 25 markers. These results tell us that we have 99.9% probability that we share a common ancestor. In our case that is Fleet COOPER, Sr. born in the 1720s. To me DNA testing has been invaluable in assuring me I am researching the correct line, and in giving me the benefit of Ben's vast amount of prior research. In turn, I have been able to give Ben information which can extend his family tree by all the folks in my line that descended from my branch of Fleet, Sr.'s descendants. Thought there is not substitute for hours of diligent papertrail rearch and documentation, I would like to encourage everyone who has living male relatives to get them in a test group, if one has been started, and therefore increase the possibilities of finding new, previously unknown relationships. The group gets the considerably discounted rates from Family Tree DNA. If interested please check out the COOPER DNA Surname Project website at: http://www2.arkansas.net/~bcooper2k/ The testing service we are using is Family Tree DNA (www.familytreedna.com, or info@familytreedna.com). There are over 50 male COOPERs currently in the COOPER SURNAME GROUP. Regards, Gary W.
