Subject: Children Sent To America Before The Mayflower Hello Everyone: We have posted a list of early VA immigrants that should be of help to those of you who may be having problems with establishing your early lines there. This concerns the Children Ordered Sent to Virginia 1618-1642 and contains a listing of 468 children, including 337 before the Mayflower landed in 1620! We have also included information on the reason for these relocations here so you can better understand why this practice happened during that time period. This would represent many thousands of lines and could be a reason why you may be having problems with your early people there. 3. I am trying to locate a Crawford family that lived in Muscogee County in the period 1933-1941. I do not have the first name of the husband, which makes it tough. The wife was Beulah. They lived in the Midland area of the county. The road was Crystal Valley Circle or something similar. This was off the Macon Road. This is the only lead that I have to my paternal grandparents. The next door neighbors might have been Samuel "Sam" Benford, who worked at a cleaner at Ft Benning with a name like Spector's (sp). Max Smith

At the age of 12 he joined the Italian navy and served for ten years. After his discharge, he returned to Lipari where he met Pappina (Josephine) Palmisano. She was standing in the doorway of her parents’ home as he approached with his brother, Antonio, who was engaged to Pappina. She turned to her mother and told her that she was going to marry the man in the navy uniform. She had turned down several suitors who had plans to go to America, but had no reservations about going with Angelo. In 1892 Angelo emigrated to America, coming first alone. He arrived at Ellis Island on March 31 aboard the “Plata”. He went to Apalachicola, Florida where an uncle was in the seafood business. He began bringing Oysters up the Chattahoochee River to Columbus, Georgia and selling them to the bars. Soon he had established a prosperous business. In 1895, he returned to Italy for his bride. He took his bride to Apalachicola. Pappina contracted malaria while there, so they soon moved to Columbus and opened a market on the corner of 10th street and Broadway, living in the rooms over the store. Angelo would sell oysters and shrimp to the bars and hotels and Pappina would make candy and tend the market. Soon the market was moved to 10th street next to the Shackleford Drugstore. Soon the market included a delicatessan, which by 1898 had become Spano’s Restaurant. Angelo and Pappina had nine more children. By 1910 they had moved to 737 3rd Avenue where they lived the rest of their lives. Every time another child came along, another room was added to the house. Eventually it reached almost through the block. Angelo died August 9, 1941 and is buried in Riverdale Cemetery. Pappina died March 14, 1955 and is buried in Riverdale Cemetery beside her husband. excerpted from SPANO OF APALACHICOLA, FL, COLUMBUS, GA AND BIRMINGHAM, AL copyright 2003, Robert Spano Additional Comments: Very little is known of Antonino Spanó, the father of Angelo Spano. He was the son of Angelo Spanó and Vincenza Lo Giudice of Lipari. He married Anna Sciacchitano on January 09, 1867 in Lipari according to church records there. Anna was the daughter of Angelo Sciacchitano and Anna Iacono. Anna was born March 3, 1831 in Lipari and died July 30, 1936 in Ensley, Alabama. They had one daughter and five sons. The daughter, Vincenza, died at about the age of 20 of a stomach tumor. The five sons all emigrated to the United States in the 1890s. Antonino had two brothers that I have been able to identify. They were Salvador Spanó and Giuseppe Spanó. Giuseppe married Concetta Pittari on February 28, 1870 in Lingua, Salina, Italy. Concetta Pittari was the daughter of Giuseppe Pittari and Caterina Coma. That is all that is known of Giuseppe Spanó at this time. The five sons of Antonino Spanó and Anna Sciacchitano were Salvadore, Nicola, Bartolomeo. Angelo and Antonio. Angelo and Antonio settled in Columbus, Ga., Salvadore and Bartolomeo settled in Birmingham, and Nicola remained in Apalachicola. excerpted from SPANO OF APALACHICOLA, FL, COLUMBUS, GA AND BIRMINGHAM, AL copyright 2003, Robert Spano This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 3.7 Kb

Tony was the son of Antonino Spanó and Anna Sciacchitano of Lipari, Italy. He is buried in the family plot in Riverdale Cemetery (section 3, lot 24). He married Angela Martello in 1891 in Lipari. Angela was born December 24, 1877, the daughter of Antonino Martello and Angela Della Chiesa, and died on June 16, 1923 in Columbus. She is buried beside Antonio. Tony and Angela emigrated to the United States in 1895. They located in Apalachicola, Florida with Tony’s uncle, Salvadore. In 1908 they moved to Columbus, Georgia, where Tony opened a Shoe Shop at 1013 1st Ave. He also sold vegetables and fruits in front of the shoe shop. They lived at 716 3rd Avenue. They had ten children. The first three were born in Lipari, the next five in Apalachicola and the last two in Columbus. About 1929 Tony married the former Camilla Harp. Camilla was the daughter of Henry and Dixie Harp. Camilla was divorced from Elmer Dockery of Chicago. Camilla had a son, Albert R. Dockery, born April 17, 1924. The family did not approve of this marriage and never acknowledged Camilla or Albert. I have been unable to find what happened to Camilla after Antonio’s death. Albert was apparently raised by his grandmother. He died in April, 1984, in Columbus. Additional Comments: Very little is known of Antonino Spanó, the father of Antonio Spano. Published by the Atlanta Historical Society in 1895 Page 622 Morgan McMichael, deceased, Attorney-at-Law, of Columbus, Ga., was born in Schley County, Ga., in 1866, and was the eldest son of Dr. J.R. McMichael and Ellen A. (Stephens) McMichael. His boyhood days were spent on his father’s farm, entering the Buena Vista, Ga., high school in his fifteenth year. After completing the course at that institution he attended the select school of Prof. Mathes, at Americus, Ga., and later was graduated from the Southern Business University, Atlanta. He read law the following year under the tutorage of Judge M. Butt, Buena Vista, and was admitted to practice at the October term of Marion Superior Court (1887), Judge (Ex-Governor) James M. Smith presiding. So creditable was his examination that he was highly complimented by the members of the local bar. He practiced law successfully for three years at Buena Vista, removing to the city of Columbus in December, 1890, where he at once came to the front as one of the leading attorneys of that city as the junior member of the firm of Wimbish, Worrill & McMichael. He was an active and valuable member of the Georgia Bar Association, served as a member of the City Council of Columbus, and as Chairman of the Finance Committee in that body, and devoted much study and labor to the preparation of a tax ordinance which has proved the most satisfactory ordinance the city of Columbus ever had. In 1894 Mr. McMichael was chosen as one of the representatives from Muscogee County to the State Legislature, representing his constituency faithfully and honorably. He was a very zealous democrat and took a keen interest in all public matters. He was possessed of good judgment, steadfast convictions and was a lucid and forcible speaker. Mr. McMichael was happily married to Miss Minnie Shepherd, a beautiful and accomplished lady, who by his sudden death has suffered a crushing and irreparable bereavement. Published by the Atlanta Historical Society in 1895 Pages 622-623 John Smith Matthews, city treasurer of Columbus, Ga., was born in Chambers County, Ala. Sept. 18, 1846, and resided there until the age of twenty-two. He is one of two sons of Ralph Matthews, who was born in Wilkes County, Ga., in 1808, and died in Opelika, Ala., in February 1871. He was a farmer all his life. The brother of John S. Matthews is William H., who was in the Fourteenth Alabama Regiment, C.S.A., and served throughout the late civil war. He is now a resident of Wooley, Ark. John Smith Matthews, the gentleman whose name heads this article, was educated in the private schools of Chambers County, Ala., and farmed on the estate of his father until January, 1864, when he enlisted in Bonand’s Battalion of Artillery, which battalion was afterward consolidated with the First Alabama Regiment. Mr. Matthews went in as a private and served until the surrender of Gen. Johnston at Greensboro, N.C. He was in the battle of Olustee, and at the siege of Charleston, S.C., and then at Averasboro and Bentonville, N.C. After the war he returned to his home and attended school for a time. In October 1868, he came to Columbus and entered the cotton firm of Allen, Preer & Illges as a clerk, remaining with them three years. He then began to buy cotton on his own account and carried on that business until 1878, when he formed a partnership with E.D. Swift under the firm name of Swift & Co., which business was continued until 1885. Mr. Matthews conducted the cotton business alone from September 1885, until January 1887, when he accepted a position in the Columbus Post Office as registry clerk, serving in that capacity until August 1888. He then entered the employ of J.R. Holts & Co., cotton factors, and remained with them until September 1889, at which time he was elected city treasurer and has been re- elected every year since that time. Mr. Matthews is a member of the Improved Order of Red Men and is the keeper of wampum of Pawnee tribe No. 27. He is a steward of St. Paul’s Methodist Episcopal Church South, of Columbus, and also a teacher in its Sunday school.
