I have quite abit of researching to go, I am trying to see if J. C Drakes sons who rode with the Johnson's Gang and if the Johnson Gang was connected to Maj- General Nathan Bedford Forrest. This should tie in with Pamela Kyle's ancestors. It appears there are quite a few of male Drakes including J. C. If and I say if. until I research further and see if the Johnson's gang and Maj-Gen Nathan Bedford Forrest were close in any wayand they may have joined the KKK wih Maj.-Gen Nathan Bedford Forrest. Three of J. C Drake's sons were in Johnson's gang. Pam will have to let me know, if she is interested in her ancestors, if this is the J. C Drake she is talking about. Some where in the story there is a Drake Cove mentioned. I will have to go back and mark the place. The Mulattos that were born into my Woulard Family in the early to mid 1800s were born to women who were already married and they listed their husband's name and the black young women that had mulatto children kept their family name and since most if not all the blacks carried my gr gr grandpapa's name , it was even more confusing. So the Stories go. Pamela, can you please tell me the birth date of your grandmother. I would like to compare her age against J. C. Drake, it appears he was a mature man in 1864 already having grown sons. Maybe J.C.D. was older when she was born. I am probably older than you and my grandmother was born in 1886. Not impossible , but he would begetting older when my grandmother came along. I am doing this research for myself and because of your email about the Russell County Herritage Book. Let me know , Pamela, if you are interested in what I find. Part of The Hisrtory of the 12th Indiana Cavalary or The 127th Indiana Regiment in the Civil War By Russ Poole Page of l or 4 pages. About 11th paragraph The next 12th Cavalry skirmish of which there is record occurred on July 8, 1864 near Vienna, Alabama involving mostly "B" and "C" companies. This report is from Lieut. Col. Alfred Reed, commanding a detachment of Twelfth Indiana Cavalry at Vienna to Col. Edward Anderson at Huntsville: "The detachment under my command yesterday morning separated about 5 miles north of Owen's Mills, on Flint River, Company C going east to J.C. Drake's, who is father to three of Johnson's gang; thence we went south to Vienna; the other company (B) was ordered to make Vienna via Owen's Mills. About three miles from Vienna the company was fired upon by Parson (Captain) Johnson's company of bushwhackers and dispersed. The captain and Lieutenant Burden and 7 of their company (B) were wounded, and the scout, John C. Martin was killed; 3 horses were killed, and some 4 or 5 wounded. The wounds on the men, though some of them are severe, are none of them mortal. I was with Company C. On arriving at Vienna I learned of the disaster to Captain Baker, and immediately repaired to the scene of action. After plundering the dead horses and men, the rebels retreated to the southward. We followed them some distance, but night coming on we returned to this place. I shall keep Company C here and pursue my original plan against the bushwhackers until further orders. I will make this place my headquarters, and orders will readily reach me here. The company is fearful that they will miss the paymaster. Whenever he is ready to pay, you can notify us and we will report there if so ordered. I shall be glad to receive instructions from time to time as to my duties here." We know that they got their pay on or about July
If anyone has a current phone book for these two towns, would they please look for a Joseph BROOKS. He was born ca 1918 in Columbus, GA & had a brother Harry G. Jr. Parents were Harry G. Sr. and Ethel M. WILLIS BROOKS. I would appreciate his phone number. Thank you. Gold
Hi Listers! I am totally with Sandra in Georgia regarding P. Kyle's comments on the Russell County Heritage Book. People who compile this kind of book are only human and errors are made. It is an awesome task compiling such a book in the first place and those that do it are to be commended! And maybe very little African American material and photos were actually submitted. The compilers can only work with what they get! I have not seen it yet but I am sure the book is super. Sibyl in Texas
Pam wrote: My Grandmother's father, according to her death certificate was J. C. Drake of Drakes Cove Alabama. I can only assume that because Mr. Drake was white that they instead chose to print J. C. Duke. I guess I fail to understand why some still can't respect Afro Americans enough to at least let history reflect the truth in 2003. I understand why family members di not speak of what happene! Sorry, my mistake. She did write death certificate and not birth certificate. When in Alabama were death certificate issued? My first Alabama death certificate goes back to 1936. I can only assume that because Mr. Drake was white that they instead chose to print J. C. Duke. This sound like a racist remark to me. If a white person said that to a black person , the NAACP would be after them. But then again, white people aren't able to speak their mind. We have to watch every word we speak about the black. Genealogy isn't a place for racists. It's a place to work together any age any color to find our ancestors. Blacks aren't the only people who run into Brick Walls, Whites do to. Blacks coming on the list and being racist and falsey accusing isn't going to help them find their ancestors and their herritage. Pam, maybe the next time a Russell County History Book is written maybe you can have all you ducks in a row along with other blacks and then stay on top of it to see if the information you sent in is copied in and if the pictures you sent in is acceptable. This is what I would have done. Pam, you don't break into Genealogy over night. It's years of belonging to lists and making friends, if done proper, no one will know if you are black or white or will care. Mostly they will seek from you will be information about their ancestors, if yours and theirs are in the same family and locations. Genealogy is seeking information from one another. I wish you luck, and the best way to correct the errors is to stay active on the lists and keep your ancestors information on the lists. This is how I found the death of my gr grandpapa after researching for almost ten years. I have been on the Georgia and Alabama lists for years and I have never seen your name or ancestors mentioned. Pam, first you must plant seeds and then weed them and watch them grow. Someone , somewhere has heard of your ancesters. But by being rude and accuse the whites of being racist, no one will ever speak up and you will loose out. Genealogy.."We are Family." Good Luck. Sandra
Amen and Amen. I want to go back and read Pam's email again. She mention having Birth Cert with the name D... something. I didn't know they issued Birth Cert back then. I have hard enough time finding death certs. My gr gr grandpapa owned slaves and every slave born carried his name. There is also a town named Woulard's Bend, because there were so many blacks that carried his name. Among the slaves there were many mulattos , but there was never birth certs with the Woulard name any where. My gr gr grandpapa had many Woulard relatives who worked together overseers, sons, cousins, brothers, nephews and even his own papap with his brothers. My gr gr grandpapa owned the land but all the other were active and around so it would have been hard to pen who the papa was. I don't think it would be fair to say my gr gr grandpap's name should have been on all the birth's cert. of the mullatos. I will have to recheck, but I don't think I have any birth certs. during the slave period, just death's and most of that information in written in the Bibles and letters and takes from the toomstones. Anyone know when Birth Certs. were first given out? I have found so many of the Court Houses have been burnt down that some information is all most impossible to find. Thanks for any help. Sandra
The truth is that the reason there is an under representation of blacks in the book was because there weren't many submittals of families to the editors and publishers. I don't see how you can be grief stricken about it. I am sure that you would prefer to see more black families in an attempt to make connections. I don't believe people are intentionally trying to disrespect blacks in this book. That is a mean accusation and very rude. As someone else pointed out, errors were made. People are human and at times stupid. You automatically assumed that because someone made an error that it was because of racial prejudice. You are assuming all whites are bad. That's racial prejudice. And people wonder why ....

McDowell, where he had been since his return from San Antonio, Texas, hoping to regain his health there, but to no avail. In 1891 he attended school in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., where he graduated, and on returning to Columbus accepted responsible positions with large firms in that city, winning the esteem, and confidence of his employees. On the 17th of June 1903 he was most happily married to Miss Annie Jeane McDowell. Few hearts and hands are ever so perfectly united in love as this congenial young couple. But their union of hearts was soon over. Mr. Huff was a consistent member of the First Baptist Church in Columbus, and truly can it be said, his life was an open book filled with noble, generous deeds, and acts of kindness. None named him but to praise, and speak of his many good traits of character. Though heavily the hand of affliction rested on him he was never know to murmur. Even in his last moments, faith and resignation shown forth from his beaming countenance. Truly realizing his condition, he endeavored to comfort those around him, by telling them he was prepared to meet his Savior, and all was well. But the tender parting with his devoted and grief-stricken young wife, beggars description after assuring her he would watch over her from heaven, the second meeting would be sweeter, he clasped her in loving embrace and the gentle spirit of this noble man passed to where beyond these voices there is peace. Though we mourn the loss of this magnetic character, yet, his life was not in vain; for his influence will never die. Yet more enduring than marble or bronze is the monument he has erected in the memory of his loved ones. The remains were tenderly laid to rest at Ellerslie, followed by a large concourse of bereaved relatives and friends. When the summer winds sing a requiem over this beloved spot, we will remember the voice of this dear one who is singing praises to God in heaven. O when our sun is setting may we glide, Like summer evenings down the tide, And leave behind us as we pass away, Sweet starry twilight around our sleeping clay. Pam Kyle, I received my ancestor's County Book from another County and there were several errors in my families alone. and I am white. I have never seen a County History Book 100% correct., My Missississippi County Book, again had several errors written about my ancestors, alone. I am sure the color of your skin had nothing to do with the errors. If you would talk to others you might see there were errors in the white ancestors , as well I know you are disappointed, but that is no reason to start pointing a finger. The writers of these County Books spend plenty of time and do the best they can. I wouldn't want to take on the time and effor these writers have have given of themselves. In one County Book my grandmother will go down as Verrie Lee instead of Minnie Lee and my gr. uncle was born 3 year after his papa was killed in an ambush. My gr grandpapa was killed in1970 and the book had his son was born in 1873.. When, my gr grandpapa was killed in Aug. 1870 and my uncle was born the following spring of 1871. My gr grandmother was only several weeks PG when my gr grandpapa was killed. Many times I have seen one person name under another person's picture. Genealogy is trial and error and us working together. This also includes the writers of the Russell County and other Counties trying to write all the information correct and please everyone. Some times people send in pictures in and thinking they should be printed, however not all pictures can be reprinted and used, this is nothing personal. Maybe the blacks can next time write their own County Book and leave out the whites and see if yours is perfect, then. All people are human and make mistakes, but not all people are racist. I know you are disappointed, for this I am sorry, but I am sure the writers of the Russell County Book including Patrica Greathouse, did the best they could. Not meaning to offend anyone. Sandra In Georgia
Hello list I too received my Russell County Heritage Book after a more than 2 year wait. I'm pleased to see my ancestors names in print, however, I was grief stricken to see the under-representation of Afro Americans. I glanced the book over, but only saw 2 pictures of Afro Americans. And my article was changed. My Gr Grandmother's picture was sent in, but not included. My Gr Gr Gr Grandmother's birth date was shown as 1870 when it was 1815. (I know because of several documents I have, including the 1870 Census in Russell County, Ala. where she was the cook on the Sterling Boykin plantation.) My Grandmother's father, according to her death certificate was J. C. Drake of Drakes Cove Alabama. I can only assume that because Mr. Drake was white that they instead chose to print J. C. Duke. I guess I fail to understand why some still can't respect Afro Americans enough to at least let history reflect the truth in 2003. I understand why family members did not speak of what happen! ed during their lifetimes. I'm glad that in death they recorded the truth. "And the truth shall set you free!" P. Kyle

I just got a message that Pat Greathouse had passed away a few months back. Is this true.??? Pat (in Fl) American by birth- Southern by the Grace of God researching - Reese,Gibson,Kimbrough,Rodgers,Pool, Williams,Rutledge,Slaughter,Holman,Senn,Oelslager,Moulds,Butts.
Well All, I received my book on Sat. It is big, It is very interesting, haven't read all of the articles about my family yet. I did find a mistake. ON page 282, there is a picture at the top left . It says this is Sara Catherine Williams Harbuck Digby. THAT IS A MISTAKE. THE PICTURE IS ACTUALLY THAT OF CORA ALETHA BOOKER WILLIAMS HODGE. SHE WAS THE SECOND WIFE OF WARREN WILLIAMS. I just want to thank Pat Greathouse and all her staff . There were so many things that happened from the beginning of this, but they did it anyway. THANKS PAT AND YOUR STAFF. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>.
