A fight broke out at the court house but T Z was taken by the mob to the corner of 10th street and 2nd Avenue. One of the streetcars were stopped at gun point and the car was ordere to go to the city limits. At that time the city limits would have been 10th Avenue, near the R C plant. Passengers other than the mob were orderd off. The street car then continued towards Wynn's hill. The hill was too steep for the steetcar. The switch was located at the base of Wynns hill, where Bradley drive is today. This is the road that runs in front of the Library. This is where the street car stopped and the mob and T Z got off. The street car was then told to go. T Z was shot there at the Wynnton Switch. There were between 25 and 50 holes in his body. He was left there in a small ditch . Word of the lyching spread like crazy and many people came out to see the body.... The site has a picture of the grave of the TZ.

After being placed under arrest, Smith confessed to the crime and was at once carried back to Butler where he is now held in jail to await his trial upon the charge of assault with intent to murder. All, perhaps, have heard how Wiggins was brutally assaulted in his own home on last Saturday night after he had returned from(on the?) night train from Columbus where he had gone to meet his wife and children who had been spending some time in Columbus. They didn't come on that train however, but instead the man Smith did come to Butler and at once proceeded to the Wiggins home and concealed himself for the purpose of murdering Wiggins, it being by the merest providence that he failed to accomplish his purpose, Wiggins escaping only (by) the "skin of his teeth," after having been shot and beaten into a near state of insensibility. It has since developed that Wiggins' own wife was at the bottom of this, (one of) the most dastardly crimes that has ever occured in this section of the state. Wiggins had $3000 life insurance, payable to his wife, who had fastened her affections upon the man Smith. His wife and Smith had planned that he (Smith) go to Butler and murder Wiggins, and and shortly after his funeral and $3000 was collected, a wedding would take place---the Gods interfered. The woman is now at Columbus, out under bond. This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 2.1 Kb

    2. John Mallory Land
    3. All, Continued thanks to Carla MILES for her transcriptions of items from the Talbotton New Era newspaper! The below obituary is for William E. "Billy" COVINGTON (24 NOV 1855-22 OCT 1907 [sic - per DAVIDSON's "A Rockaway in Talbot," Vol. III, p. 48]), son of William M. & Mary Ann (KING) COVINGTON (they m. 20 JUN 1850 in Muscogee Co, GA). William E. m. 18 NOV 1880 in Talbot Co, GA to Fatima M. "Fatie" CALHOUN (14 JAN 1860-09 NOV 1907. Billy and Fatie are buried in the COVINGTON Family Cemetery on Canterbury Road in Georgia Militia District 688 near Box Springs in Talbot Co, GA ("Rockaway," III-48, 134). "Rockaway" also shows that in 1880 William E. COVINGTON sold a property formerly owned by KAUFMAN; the property had changed hands when COVINGTON bought it back in 1899. The house on it burned in 1900. W. E. COVINGTON appears on a list of members of the Box Springs Democratic Club in support of Grover CLEVELAND, which list appeared in the Talbotton New Era newspaper on 13 SEP 1892 ("Rockaway," III-176). ROGERS' "History of Chattahoochee Co, GA," p. 352, gives four daughters for Billy and Fatie: Ethel, who m. Robert McBRYDE; Elba, Eva, and Mae. Eva is perhaps the daughter who m. B. JACKSON or S. C. JENKINS, and another unnamed daughter would have married the other. However, ROGERS' "History" states that Billy had a sister Sallie who m. Sterling JENKINS (Sr.). Perhaps this source is in error and she is actually the fifith daughter of Billy and Fatie, or perhaps the obituary is in error and Mrs. S. C. JENKINS is Billy's sister rather than daughter? An S. C. JENKINS (no dates) appears on a list of Marion Co. Coroners in COBB's "Marion Co, GA: Motherland of Many" - the list covers 1828 to the present. An account of some of the descendants of Sterling S. JENKINS, Sr. (1750-1823) appears in "Rockaway," III-122, but the son-in-law of William COVINGTON does not appear to be mentioned. I am interested to know the parentage of Robert McBRYDE / McBRIDE and would like to get clarification on the JENKINS matter. Hope this is of help to someone, John in TX Archives wrote: >File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: >Carla Miles cmhistory@mchsi.com September 2, 2003, 11:28 pm > >The Talbotton New Era, October 31, 1907 > >The Talbotton New Era >Thursday, October 31, 1907 >Page 6 > >Mr. W.E. Does anyone disagree with that ? Further, Minerva's husband,Thomas F.Wall , signed guardianship papers in 1856 (for his younger siblings)with Silas B.Harrell and Thomas C.
