Thanks Mary, that was a surprise. I would have thought Mitchell County, Georgia would have been closer to Columbus, Georgia , Muscogee County, because of the District 668 being in Muscogee County. Also, have you ever of a District call Gum Pond?. What I have read leads me to think it was near Columbus, nearer to Talbot County. I would have never guess that Mitchel County was down past Albany , Georgia. Thanks for your help. Sandra
Does anyone know where the District - Gum Pond #668? My gr grandpapa was in Muscogee County/Gum Pond District 668 in 1850 tax list. Margaret I like to believe that people in the long run are going to do more to promote peace than our governments. Indeed, I think that people want peace so much that one of these days governments had better get out of the way and let them have it. -Dwight D. Hello Months back Virginia Crilley was kind enough to share some info with me on how to obtain death info on Porterdale Cemetery--info I thought would never be available since the paper records were already in a very poor state. Anyway I just want to share with those who are interested that I finally was able to follow through on her info and did indeed find all the death records for Porterdale available through the Mormon Family History Library. It is best to go to the site (search for Columbus, Ga.) to order them as the numbers may have changed, but when I obtained the microfiche this summer it was as follows: Porterdale Colored Cemetery burials 1897-1944 Film #2196986 Porterdale Colored Cemetery burials (cont.) 1944-2000 Film #2196987 East Porterdale Colored Cemetery burials 1961- 1976 Film #2196987 Porterdale Colored Cemetery lot sales 1933 - 1942 Film #2196989 Thank you so very much Virginia. The information I obtained was extremely helpful. Hope this helps someone else. Pam
Thanks for the responses...I didn't realize that this was an ongoing newspaper. I recently was reading Edward A Mueller's Perious Journeys: A History of Steamboating on the Chattahoochee, Apalachicola, and Flint Rivers, 1828-1928 and was astonished to find my great great grandfather's name (Lawson Whitfield). He was a night watchman on the steamboat JOHN C CALHOUN the night it caught fire and sank. This was reported in the May 8, 1860 issue of the Columbus Enquirer. pat

Mr. Maxwell had been ill for some months. Many years ago he lived in Talbotton, then removed to Columbus, where he married Miss Claudia Howard, who passed away several years ago. For a number of years Mr. Maxwell traveled and was one of the most genial and popular men on the road. All who knew him loved and esteemed him. While connected with the AB&A Railroad, his health failed entirely and he retired to his boyhood home to rest and recuperate, but in vain, disease laid its insidious hand upon him. He sleeps near his old home in the familys hallowed grounds. Many friends and relatives were present to pay a last loving tribute. Rev. N.C. Underwood and J.G. Harrison pronounced the last sad rites. Many friends in town and county grieve at the passing of this genial whole-souled gentleman, and deepest sympathy goes out to the bereaved son and daughter who survive him.
