    1. [GAMUSCOGEE] The 17th GEORGIA INFANTRY REGIMENT, BOOK
    2. To all the county lists members: I am trying to get the word out that I am writing a Regimental History on the 17th Ga. Infantry and have updated my website. I have a roster of each company up to Company H. I will try to get that completed by this evening. I realize men might not have enlisted in this regiment from your county, however, since relatives moved on to other counties after the war, there could be a chance your ancestor served in this unit. Please take the time to check my website, and if you find a name you are connected to, feel free to email me at LDSED@aol.com for submitting information, photos, brief genealogy or interesting family stories, to be included in my book. More information about the book here: THE 17th GEORGIA INFANTRY REGIMENT Regards, Linda Snow Davis

A post mortem on the body showed that Benjamin B. Blythe 50, suffered a coronary artery stoppage, Coroner Ernest Howell revealed. He said there was considerable blockage in the vital artery, but the exact cause of death had not been determined. The coroner added that tissue specimens were sent to the State Crime Laboratory in Atlanta for further study. Night Clerk Carl Fouraker of the Cardinal Hotel said it was his habit to check on Sgt. Blythe each evening when he came on duty because the veteran of World War II had lost a leg since receiving a medical discharge from the Army at Camp Kilmer, N.J. in 1952. Yesterday, Mr. Fouraker checked Sgt. Blythe's room at 7:45 p.m. When he received no response to a knock, he said he opened the door and found the body on the floor in the middle of the room. According to papers found in the room, Sgt. Blythe had served 14 years and was entitled to wear the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal. He had also seen service in the Panama Canal Zone and in Greece prior to World War II. A native of Box Springs, Ga., he was the nephew of Cliff McLendon of Columbus. Several cousins live in Junction City, Ga. Sgt. Blythe had served as a clerk at the Cardinal Hotel until his left leg was amputated about a year ago. The body is at the Britton and Dobbs Funeral Home, Columbus with funeral arrangements pending the arrival of the relatives. Probe is Held in Man's Death The Columbus Ledger Tuesday, September 20, 1955 Page 20 A post mortem on the body of Benjamin B. Blythe 50, found dead in his room at the Cardinal Hotel last night gave "every indication" that the man succumbed of natural causes, Coroner E.L. Howell said today. Howell said that is appeared that the artery blockages had resulted from the effects of surgery performed some time ago. Reports on the death by the State Crime Laboratory is being awaited, Howell said. Night Clerk Carl Ouraker of the Cardinal Hotel said it was his habit to check on Blythe each evening when he came on duty because the veteran of World War II had lost a leg since receiving a medical discharge from the Army at Camp Kilmer, N.J. in 1952. Gold WEEKLY COLUMBUS [GA] ENQUIRER, December 9, 1862, p. 1, c. 1 No Clothing to be Sent out of the State. The agent of the Southern Express Company, at Macon, gives notice through the Telegraph that that Company will not receive for shipment out of the State any shoes, cloth, clothing or leather, until further notice. It pursues this course by order of Governor Brown. This may be regarded as a measure preliminary to the seizure of the factories and tanneries by the Governor, according to authority vested in him by the Legislature. The act of the Legislature authorizes him to pursue this course in the event of the refusal of these establishments to furnish their fabrics for soldiers' clothing at prescribed prices, viz: Osnaburgs and Shirtings 25 cents per yard, Woolen Jeans $2.50 per yard, Cotton Yarns $2.50 per bunch, Leather $1 per pound, Shoes, best army pattern $8 per pair. We presume that the Railroad companies have also been, or will be, forbidden by the Governor to take these articles out of the State until he effects the desired arrangement with the manufacturers. . .

    3. Does anyone on the list have ties to this BROWN? I have yet to find the parents & siblings of the Brown my cousin married. Gold WEEKLY COLUMBUS [GA] ENQUIRER, November 25, 1863, p. 1, c. 4 Patriotic Examples.-The Lexington (Va.) Gazette says: Col. R. H. Brown, the proprietor of the Rockbridge Woolen Factory, has set an example worthy of all imitation. He manufactures an excellent article of jeans, which he sells at $1.60 and $1.75 per yard to consumers. He will not sell to speculators at any price. The goods sold at so low a figure could not be bought in Lynchburg at less than $4 or $5. The man who can be satisfied with a moderate profit, when the necessities of the community would enable him to treble that profit, deserves the lasting gratitude of every true hearted citizen; and deserves to be remembered when the war is ended. We have also been informed that Wm. Withrow, Esq., of Brownsburg, continues to sell leather at forty or fifty cents, while others are getting two dollars. A noble heart throbs in his bosom.

    3. Hi! From Nancy Ann Telfair's book, "The Columbus, Georgia Centenary 1828-1928"" p.79-"Following the opening of the Howard and Echols cotton factory in that year..." (assumed to be 1845 from the first paragraph.) p.83-"In December, 1845, one of the newspapers came out commenting that "the manufacturing excitement is largely on the increase. Messrs. Howard, Bridges, Carter, Baird and Jeter are pushing their improvements ahead." p.84-"The Howard Manufacturing company was organized the following year for the purpose of building a cotton factory. Already the Coweta and Columbus factories were in operation. The new building ws to be 125 by 48 feet, five stories high and to run 5,000 spindles. The directors were as follows: Van Leonard, J. C. Cook, E. T. Taylor, Harvey Hall and J. I. Ridgway. The president was, Van Leonard, and the superintendent, Jonathan Bridges." p.85-:Howard Manufacturing Company; located in Columbus, capital, $85,000; designed for 5,000 spindles and 75 looms, and will employ 100 hands. There used to be a Howard's Bus Line, but I am not sure of the owners of the Bus Station. If you haven't already , you might want to join the Georgia and the Gamuscogee County List. Sandra Georgia The only HOWARD I found in my books was a H. Augusta HOWARD. He was associated with "Georgia Woman Suffrage Association - founded July 1890 - along with Primus KING. FROM a March 25th email from John Mallory LAND about Howard and Eagle & Phenix Mills - <parts snipped> The following have tried to provide a few basics about the Howard Manufacturing Company and the Eagle Mill (later Eagle and Phenix Mills): "In 1847, the Howard Manufacturing Company was formed, the most ambitious project for the manufacture of cotton up to this time. It was to be five stories high and run 5,000 spindles. Van LEONARD was President; Jonathan BRIDGES, Superintendant. The Directors were, besides LEONARD, J. C. COOK, E. T. TAYLOR, Harvey HALL, and J. L. RIDGEWAY [WORSLEY, p. 178; see MARTIN, Vol. II, p.22]." Among data provided in Rev. George WHITE's "Statistics" for the industries of the Columbus area in 1849 is: "Howard Manufacturing Company, located in Columbus, with capital in the amount of $85,000, has been designed for 5,000 spindles and 75 looms, to employ 100 hands in the manufacture of sheeting, shirtings, and yarns." In 1851, William H. YOUNG bought up the water lots of the Howard Manufacturing Company of John H. HOWARD and others, and obtained a charter organizing the Eagle Manufacturing Company to operate the Eagle Mill. It quickly became the largest textile operation in the city. It is proper to say that this article is written by one who is in no way interested in the Company alluded to, or has ever been benefited by the liberal course which it has, with provident patriotism, seen fit to pursue, and that it is quite without the knowledge of any of its managers.
