Mr. and Mrs. Chas. W. Mizell, Mr. and Mrs. James Johnson vied with each other in making it the “merriest, happiest day, of all the glad New Years.” The home of Mr. and Mrs. Mizell on Tuesday evening was the scene of a reunion and an elegant six o’clock dinner. Among the guests was Miss Chase, a gifted musician. Wednesday at noon, a joyous party met in the attractive home of Mr. and Mrs. James Johnson. The beloved pastor, Rev. Granberry, was present to invoke blessings and many added years to the life of the honored guest. Seventy years rest lightly upon “Uncle Bob”. Length of days with him, have meant usefulness, kindliness and good cheer. Back of all this is the grandeur of an upright soul, the courage and greatness of the true soldier who at all times has fought the good fight and run with patience the race set before him. Many happy returns is the wish of Uncle Bob’s large circle of friends. This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 1.6 Kb

I thought he probably meant AME (African Methodist Episcopal) --- but didn't want to assume this. original of the AME. In 1796, Blacks who worshipped at the John Street Church in New York City were dissatisfied with their exclusion from exercising church privileges and weary from having to receive Sacraments after the White families. Led by James Varick, they organized the African Methodist Episcopal Church. The distinguishing characteristic of the African Methodist Episcopal Church was freedom, and it took a pronounced position on slavery. The word "Zion" was added in 1848. By the way, I am interested in learning the location of the Factory Mission. Does anyone know if this was situated near the factories along the river in Columbus – or did it perhaps serve the community at the Columbus Factory (Clapp’s Factory), three miles north of the city? There was a Methodist church in the Clapp’s Factory settlement at some point during its history. John in TX

Clason Kyle (1986), p. 55: "Saint James African Methodist Episcopal Church was organized in 1863. This congregation was originally called 'Old Asbury,' the name given by worshipers shortly after the Emancipation Proclamation. The present church is built on land granted by act of the Georgia Legislature in 1873. It was erected in 1876 under the pastorate of Rev. Wesley J. GAINES at a cost of $20,000. It is of frame construction with exterior walls of solid masonry and handmade bricks. The graceful central tower and flanking turrets were added in 1886 during the ministry of Rev. L. L. THOMAS. The church has been called the finest example of Victorian Gothic Revival in Columbus, and Saint James AME ranks as the second oldest church of the denomination in Georgia. (Photograph from the author's collection.)" An online White Pages listing gives the address of 1002- 6th Avenue in Columbus for St. James AME Ch! u! rch; phone 706-322-8043. According to "Columbus on the Chattahoochee," by Etta Blanchard Worsley (1951), p. 41: In the early 1820's, there was an Indian mission with school called Asbury Mission established by the Methodist Reverend William CAPERS just north of the Ft. Mitchell Military Reservation and west of the bounds of Coweta Town (in Alabama, across the Chattahoochee River from what is now Ft. Benning), named for Bishop Francis ASBURY. I don't gather that this mission had any direct connection to the Asbury Chapel in the query - Asbury seems to have been a popular name for Methodist institutions. Thus far, I've found no reference in my sources specifically to an Asbury Chapel in Columbus, nor to Rev. Mack STEWART. I'll do some more checking. Hope some of this helps, John in TX

    3. Let's all see what we can find out to help Stephen on his research in Muscogee County. I think if we all shared little bits and pieces (including the books you may own)...that we might really find out something.... 1)Does anyone know more about Mack Stewart? Is this a nickname? What years might he have been preaching? 2) Asbury Chapel history... Just where was this church located.... Carol shared a deed 1853 to the Methodist Episcopal Church -- and I assume this one is the "white church".... Stephen Barber <spbarber@mchsi.com> I am researching the emergence of the A. M. E. denomination in the Chattahoochee Valley in late 1865 and in 1866 and trying to find information on some of the African-American preachers, most notably Mack Stewart. I'm interested in Asbury Chapel because I don't know much about it. I thought the only white Methodist church in Columbus in the 1850s was St. Luke. Part of looking at the formation of black congregations is to see the white churches from which that came. Virginia Crilley

H.S. Allen, Pastor of Broad Street Methodist Church, against Mr. Robert Reid, Mr. E.M. Wheat and the Wheat Drug Company, charging them with misdemeanor the specific charge being that they violated the Sunday law in that they sold soft drinks at their soda founts last Sunday. Sheriff Roberts served the papers and the defendants all promptly gave bond in the sum of $100. The cases have been set for trial in the City Court this morning, and much interest attaches to the outcome. Witnesses have been subpoenaed and it is presumed that the cases will go to trial. It will be remembered that recently the grand jury instructed the Sheriff to enforce the Sunday law, permitting the sale only of such necessities as drugs, ice, etc. All drug stores at once discontinued the sale of everything but drugs, the soda fountains being placed out of commission from Saturday night until Monday morning This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 1.7 Kb
