    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Wilkerson, wilkinson, nolin, nolan, sanford Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Xd.2ADE/1383 Message Board Post: My Grandfather is Homer Wilkerson (Ga. and Al.) Br. 1900 had two sisters named Ila Belle and Bessie. I have found some information but I have my reservations about them being accurate on my part. He married Thelma F. Sanford and they had two children Clarence Rudolph ( my father) and Lamar, Lamar was killed ,when he was hit by a truck, at the age of 3 in Columbus Ga abt. 1933. My Grandparents divorced in the 30's and my Father lived in Columbus Ga. with Ila Belle, she was married to Arthur Nolan who owned a furniture store, Nolan and Son, in Columbus. In the 1930 US Census they are listed as follows: Homer Wilkinson- 29 - not Wilkerson as it should be. Thelma Wilkinson- 22 Rudolph Wilkinson- 6 years Lamar Wilkinson- 1 month Edward Sanford- Brother in Law is also listed in the houshold The Nolans are listed as follows: Arthur Nolan Ila Nolan Nila Nolan Preston Nolan I know that Uncle Preston married Mary Alice Cooper and had 4 children twin daughters Patricia and Jeanette, daughter Jean and son Randy. All the families lived on the same block along with the Nolan and Son Furniture store My Father died in 83' and Granddaddy died in the 73' and is buried at Pine Hill Cemetary in Columbus, my Grandmother remarried, lived in California and died in 62' so as you see I have no living source of information. I would like anyone who may have any information on these relatives to contact me at crkwilts@aol.com. You never know who or what might jog someone's memory. Thank you, Carol Wilkerson Russo crkwilts@aol.com

Brigade, and was honorably discharged on the ____ day of April 1865; that whilst engaged in such military service and in the line of duty in the State of Pennsylvania, on the 2nd day of July 1863, he was disabled or wounded as follows: I was shot through the left wrist, the ball breaking the bone, paralyzing three fingers on said left hand, and causing said left arm to ?eri?s away; rendering said left arm and hand substantially and essentially useless. I was also, on the above named date shot in the right side of the head, said shot fracturing the skull, said wound in the head renders me practically incompetent to perform the manual vocations of life. Deponent desires to participate in the benefits of section 1250 of the code, and the Acts amendatory thereof, and makes application for the pension to which he is entitled for the year thereunder, ending October 26th, 1899. Biggens personally known to me to be trustworthy citizens, each of whom, being duly sworn according to law, severally say, under oath, that they are personally and well acquainted with Charles Blackshear whos application is herewith presented for a pension, that he has resided in this State continuously since the 24th day of December, 1841, that he served in Company A of the 31st Regiment of Lawton's Brigade, and from our personal knowledge, he while in the line of duty, was injured by the service as follows: He was shot on the battlefield at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania through the left arm near the wrist causing said left arm to perish away. and to draw three fingers down in the palm of said left hand, rendering said left hand and arm substantially and essentially useless. He was at the same time and place wounded in the right side of the head, fracturing the skull. The applicant, Chas. Blackshear being a farmer and having to be continuously exposed to the sun, in our opinion said wound would render him practically incompetent to perform the manual vocations of life. We personally know above stated facts. We were with him in the Army and have known him ever since. He was honorably discharged or retired from the service on ___day of April 1865. Applicant disabled as stated and has been so to our certain knowledge ever since 1863. We have no interest in the recovery of a pension by him. W.H. Shores, Co. B T.P. Young, Co. B J.L. Thearon A. Blankenship S1C of USS Arizona. He still is a crew member serving on his duty station. 21 years old, A native of Morgan Co., Al. According to my genealogy chart he was my 4th cousin once removed. Growing up he was cousin Thearon. There is an empty grave at New Center Baptist Church in Morgan Co. The headstone gives the dates of birth and death and states. Remember Pearl Harbour. The other is not a relative, except by profession he is my brother. I was Navy he was Army. Col John Wesley Loud was a First Lieutenant in the field artillary, stationed at Ft De Russy. His large guns were too big to fire at the attacking planes, so he grabbed a Springfield and shot away. `He and his bride of 4 months had hosted a party the night before at the O club. In a few days she was bound stateside while John went south and participated in the Solomons campaign. After that he came back stateside for a few months and the headed to Europe where he participated in many large battles as a field intelligence officer. He then was active in the Military government of Germany and returned to Civilian life in 1948. Like me he kept his military affilation through the reserves. He retired a COL. He and I were in the Old Guard of the Gate City Guard together. We lost John this past year and we do miss him so. Rest in peace brothers. ROBERT HOWARD BURIED AT COLUMBUS Columbus, Ga., January 5--(Special)--The funeral of Col. Robert M. Howard, aged 80, whose death occurred in Eufala yesterday morning, took place here this afternoon from the First Presbyterian church. Colonel Howard was with his daughter when death came. He was one of the most prominent citizens of west Georgia. He was a confederate veteran and author, a speaker of eloquence and a man of deep learning and chivalric impulses. His death is generally deeply regretted. Additional Comments: I need a little help. I'm trying to find out a little more about Col. Howard for a story I'm doing for the Schley county GenWeb site. He was the keynote speaker at the unveiling of the Ellavile monument to Schley county's war dead. I've not had a lot of success with his military career thus far. It seems he was a member of an independant cavalry company. There were few records. I would also be interested in knowing what he authored and generally, what qualified him to be chosen as keynote speaker at the unveiling. Any help would be greatly appreciated. 3. Most Counties built Confederate Monuments around 1910 -- and sometimes had photos taken of the Veterans invited for the unveiling. Columbus had a much earlier monument. I wondered if anyone has any information about this dedication and if there may have been veterans present? "Erected by the ladies of the Memorial Association, 1879, to honor the Confederate soldiers who died to repel unconstitutional invasion, to protect the right reserved to the people, and to perpetuate forever the sovereignty of the states. In the back it reads: "In Memoriam". Below this is " Gather the sacred dust of warriors tried and true, who bore the flag of our nation's trust and fell in the cause, though lost, still just. And died for me and you". http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Pines/3093/columbus.html Faye L. Dyess has done such a marvelous job with this page.... Virginia Crilley

June 25 - (Special) Morgan McMichael, one of the leading attorneys at the Columbus bar, died at his home in this city at 9:30 o'clock tonight after a short illness of typhoid fever. Mr. McMichael's death causes the deepest sorrow throughout this section of the state. He was widely known and universally esteemed. He was one of the brainiest young men of this city. He had served in the city council and the state legislature with marked ability. He had distinguished himself on a number of occasions as an orator and debater. Mr. McMichael was born in September 1866 , and was the son of the late Dr. J. R. McMichael, of Buena Vista. He was the oldest of a family of thirteen children. He was educated in the schools of Buena Vista and was afterwards a law student under Colonel E. M. Butt and Judge W. B. Butt, at that place. He was admitted to the bar in 1887 and afterwards moved to this city, where he has been since engaged in the practice of his profession. In 1893 he was elected to the city council, which position he held until 1894, when he was elected to the state legislature from this county. During the last session of the general assembly he introduced the McMichael election bill, which is now pending. He was a member of the Masonic Fraternity, the order of Red Men and the Elks. All rights reserved. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/copyright.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/gafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Harris Hill harrishill@starband.net December 1, 2003, 7:20 pm The Atlanta Consttution The Atlanta Consttution September 1, 1883 THE BUENA VISTA RAILROAD BARBECUE >From the Columbus Times Tuesday was a big day in Buena Vista, it being the occasion of the railroad barbecue. About three thousand people were present and rousing speeches were made by Colonel Edgar Butt, of Buena Vista and Hon. B.B. Hinton and Dupont Guerry, of Americus. The dinner was the grandest affair ever gotten up in Marion county, and ample to satisfy the vast crowd. The orators built the road with perfect ease, and Americus pledged the necessary funds to finish it to that point. Ellaville has subscribed $25,000 to carry it by that place and though little real business was done at the meeting Tuesday, it did much to inspire the people to renewed effort. Americus was represented by a delegation of seventy-five or eighty of her prominent citizens. From Columbus were Messrs. John Booth, J.C. Anderson, O.C. Bullock, Abb Wooldridge, John Shepherd and Hal Hilman. At night the festivities closed with a ball, which was largely attended. The following communication from Captain Persons speaks for itself: "Geneva, Ga., August 29, 1883--Editors Times: An attendance at the Buena Vista railroad festival of yesterday convinced me that the road will be built and that Americus will secure its terminal, unless Columbus quickly interferes. All the people of Marion appear to be resolved upon a road, and quite a majority of them with whom I discussed appeared to favor Columbus as their point of trade, if they can have railway communication with her. I was told that half the sum offered by Americus would carry the road to Bostick, and not only secure the trade of the past but greatly increase it with Columbus. I know that Columbus knows her interest quite too well to need any advice from me, and I propose no advice, but thought to furnish two facts which may not be so well known to all of her merchants as to myself, namely, that Marion means to build a road, and second, prefers to point it to Columbus if she can command the means. Mr. R.O. Woodall, a prominent merchant of Buena Vista, is in the city representing the railroad company, and will call on our business men to day in the effort to induce them to take some interest in the matter. It would not require a large subscription to secure the road for Columbus, and if a few prominent men will take hold of the matter it can be raised within the next forty-eight hours. We bespeak for Mr. Woodall a careful hearing and such aid to his enterprise as can be extended. This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/gafiles/ File size: 3.1 Kb
