Irvin was what people thought his name was because it sounded that way. He was the son of Nathaniel and Susan A. Blackmon of SC born in Harris Co., GA in 1847. His son Urban Mercer, Jr. was my husbands great grandfather. Urban Mercer married Missouri Dennis in Harris Co., GA in 3/17/1865. His civil war records and marriage certificate list him as Urban Mercer. U. M.'s civil war pension record list Missouri as applicant. Courthouse records show U. M. Blackmon died 8/01 and J. E. Blackmon and William Myers were administrators. "History of Harris Co., GA" list his name as Irvin and Urban. Urban aka Irvin owned Hale's Ferry located at Lickskillet. The property consisted of a cotton gin, a sawmill, a grist mill, a dam and a bridge. The property was purchased from the Hargett family. Most of this Blackmon family lived in Whitaker and are buried at Shady Grove Church Cemetery, along with the Myers, Hales and Hargetts. I've recently started re-arranging my personal collection into family lines in order to document the related history and found a 1936 Christmas Card. On December 2, 1936, Mr. & Mrs. S.C. MASSEY living on Glade Road in Columbus, Ga was mailed a Christmas card from their Coca-Cola Salesman - L. L. REESE. The Massey's operated a store approximately 5 miles east of Columbus (Muscogee County). The location of that store is now part of Ft. Benning off Buena Vista Road. Oh, yes Santa was drinking a coke. I have scanned both sides of the card and the envelope for anyone interested, please contact me privately. kemis sobby@knology.net

Kemis, I do have a copy of the 1997 reprint. The records for Mt. Paran in the book are quite helpful, yet I can't help but think the original records would tell us more, if they could be located. The ROGERS account does include many names, but I'm curious as to whether there were more dates included in the source records. Also, following the Church Roll from 1860 to 1870 (p. 85), appears the comment, "Names of a number of colored members are omitted." It would be nice to recover that information and any other data that may have been left out of the published account. Thanks, John in TX Kemis Massey wrote: > Do you have a copy of her book? Someone else my have more accurate or up-to-date information, but according to my database: Burrell LEE (ca. 1789 Columbia Dist, SC - OCT 1896 AL?) was the son of Burrell LEE (Sr.), who d. after 1865, and his wife Alsie. The younger Burrell is said to have m1. ca. 1836? GA or AL? to Mahala UNKNOWN (ca. 1818 GA-ca. 1853-54 Muscogee Co, GA?). I show seven children for them, evidently all b. in Muscogee Co, GA, the last b. ca. 1851. The family perhaps lived in or near the portion of Muscogee that became Chattahoochee Co. on 13 FEB 1854 because, after Mahala's death, Burrell m2. 03 NOV 1856 in Chattahoochee Co, GA, to Nancy Ann PATE - sister of John Jordan PATE who m. 09 OCT 1856 to Rebecca A. "Becky" LEE, daughter of Burrell by first wife Mahala. Mahala LEE appears on a membership roll of Mt. Paran Primitive Baptist Church in Muscogee Co. between 1837 and 1846, and was dismissed by letter before 1848 (per a summary in ROGERS' History of Chattahoochee Co, GA, p. 84). If we could locate the original records, we might be able to pinpoint these dates more precisely. To what church did Mahala move her letter of membership? Church records sometimes note the deaths of members. Did she later move her membership back to Mt. Paran? Note that Rebecca LEE appears on the Mt. Paran rolls sometime between 1849 and 1855 (ibid, p. 85). John in TX Tabsgran2@aol.com wrote: >Martha, >Re below...Do you know who this Burrell LEE was related to ?? Martha, I think this family were members of the Mt. Paran Primitive Baptist Church in Muscogee (later Chattahoochee) Co. during that time period. If we could find the early church records, they might indicate when Mahala died. A later book of records (beginning in the 1880's or so and running to about 1920, I think) has been photocopied and placed in the Bradley Memorial Library in Columbus. I'm not sure if the whereabouts of the earlier records is known now. They existed in the early 1930's, when a summary was prepared for inclusion in the original edition of Nancy Kate ROGERS' "History of Chattahoochee County, Georgia," published in 1933. Maybe if all of us who are interested in those early Mt. Paran families were to beat the bushes, we could come up with those records? The place to start would be to check with Barbara (BLACKSTOCK) SIZEMORE (Mrs. Bobby D.) out at Box Springs in Talbot County. She's the one who photocopied the later book and placed the copy in the library. John in TX Motthu@aol.com wrote: >Does anyone know if there are any death records for the 1850 to 1855 time >frame? Does anyone know if there are any death records for the 1850 to 1855 time frame? I need the death record of Mahala Lee who was married to Burrell Lee. Martha
Pam, Britton & Dobbs was bought out by Vance Funeral Homes, which is still in business in Columbus and Phenix City. However, they do not have the old records. There is a lady who is a daughter of one partner and granddaughter of the other (BRITTON & DOBBS) who has all the old record books. She lives in Lannett, AL. Please email me, and I will provide you with her contact information. I believe she is willing to do look-ups, if they are not excessive, and earlier this year she met me at the public library in Valley, AL, so I could look through the books for several hours - a very nice person. She has told me she would be willing to let someone have access to the records to copy them so they can be transcribed/abstracted, and would even carry them to Columbus for this to be done, but I have not come across anyone who is able to take on the project. It should be done soon. When she gave me access to them, one of the books (from about 1904) was missing, and she didn't know what had become of it. The records go back to the 1890's. By the way, the abstraction of Britton & Dobbs funeral home records that is in the collection of the Bradley Memorial Library in Columbus does not cover all of the years, and the years that are covered do not include all of the information contained in the original records. Does anyone on this list have information about this person who was born in Orange General Hospital in Orlando, Florida, on 19 November 1943, son of Mr. and Mrs. Milton WALTON? I purchased a scrapbook in an antique store in Columbus, GA, with wonderful photos of this man's family, even his original birth certificate! Does anyone kow anything about this WALTON family? There is evidence that they lived in Columbus as he attended church and Sunday School at St. Luke Methodist Church and grade school at Wynnton Elementary. The family has also lived in Bibb County, GA. This album needs to return home. Help, please. Pat --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Find out what made the Top Yahoo! Searches of 2003
