This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: WINSLETT Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Xd.2ADE/1412 Message Board Post: The following death notice was passed to me by a fellow researcher: "A SAD DEATH: After a Long Illness of Consumption, Mr. Winslett Expired Yesterday - Mr. S. S. Winslett died at his home,No. 209 Sixteenth street, at 10:25 yesterday morning, after a protracted illness of consumpton. The deceased was 28 years old, and leaves a wife and many friends to mourn his loss. He was a member of the Beulah Christian church in Girard [AL]. The funeral will take place from the family residence at 12 o'clock today. The interment will occur at Clapp's factory burying ground." The notice appeared in the Columbus [GA] Enquirer-Sun newspaper, p. 3. The residence was probably in Phenix City, Lee Co, AL, but could have been in Girard, Russell Co, AL, or Columbus, Muscogee Co, GA. The Clapp's Factory Cemetery is now within the city limits of Columbus, but at that time was several miles north of the city. The mill operated from the early 1830's to the mid-1880's. I am interested in learning of S. S. WINSLETT's identity and family connections. Thank you - John <retrofit@flash.net>

In 1906, J. M. Lemard (I think it is Lemard. It is very heard to read) officiated at my cousin's wedding. Could someone check the directories or phone books and see if he was a minister at a church or if a Justice of the Peace or Judge please. Could someone also look for him in the 1900 and 1910 census. Thank you. Gold
I am looking for any information on Mattie ROWE, born date unknown, probably 1860's. The only information I have is her son was Roy B. RENTZ, he was born in Muscogee Co., GA., in 1884. Roy's social security application lists his father as Carlos Rentz. Any input is appreciated. Suzy Johnson
Lisa, are your 1960 Rowes from Miami, Florida??
There is a furniture store in downtown Columbus by the name of Raymond Rowe. When most other stores abandoned downtown the store stayed. It is one of the more exclusive furniture stores, but bargains can be found there. There was a John Rowe who performed 4 marriages in Chattahoochee County between 1854-1889. Windham is a name associated with a drug store from days past. It was a neighborhood drug store, that closed (if memory serves me) within the last 20 years after the death of Mr. Windham. From what friends who grew up in his neighborhood, he delivered and ran a tab for a lot of hardworking people - something we can't get in our "neighborhood chain stores" of today. kemis Subject: [GAMUSCOGEE] Rowe/Roe in Muscogee and Taylor Counties I am related to Elder John R Rowe and Mary Jane Phillips who were married 20 Aug 1846 in Meriwether County and later lived in Butler, GA. We get so excited with all the new files coming in!! Please pass this along to your surname or other lists where it might be helpful. >From another list. . . this is a West Virginia law. Last Saturday, March 13, in the WV Legislature,House Bill 4330 passed. It is now awaiting signature from Governor Wise to make it law. If you are a family genealogist/historian whose research involves West Virginia, then this bill affects your work whether you live in West Virginia or another state. If Governor Wise signs HB 4330, all birth records will be closed to public access for 100 years and all death records closed for 50 years. We are all concerned about privacy issues but HB 4330 in its current format is too restrictive. Please email Governor Wise and address your concerns. Don't delay. The governor's email address is Governor@WVGOV.org If you would like to examine HB 4330 then cut and paste the URL below. Please take the time to read this email. It's two emails in one. I will say that I have written to my House Rep Sanford Bishop. I would hate to know we couldn't have any of the genealogy web sites any more. kemis Proposed Legislation Would Wreak Havoc for Genealogists and others, of course! A new bill before the U.S. Congress proposes to overturn one of the most fundamental concepts of the present copyright laws. If passed, facts would become copyrighted for the first time in U.S. history. The Database and Collections of Information Misappropriation Act (HR3261) would make it a crime for anyone to copy and redistribute a substantial portion of data collected by commercial database companies and list publishers. At first, that sounds like a good idea. However, a bit more thought shows that nobody would be able to republish stock quotes, historical health data, sports scores, or voter lists. In fact, a lot of genealogy information could not be republished. If passed, Google and all the other search engines would be crippled, probably driven out of business. These are online databases that collect information, or facts, from other online sites so that the user can quickly find the information they seek. If Google and the others are not allowed to collect facts that are now copyrighted, how will they be able to index the Web for you? Art Brodsky, spokesman for public advocacy group Public Knowledge, says the bill would let anyone drop a fact into a database or a collection of materials and claim monopoly rights to it. This would contradict the core principle of the Copyright Act, which states that mere information and ideas cannot be protected works. Let's say that a commercial genealogy service such as Ancestry.com or OneGreatFamily.com publishes the fact that your great-great-grandparents had a child named John. Once that "fact" has been published by any commercial service, that original publisher would hold the copyright on the fact, and no one else would be allowed to publish it again. The Family History Library, the New England Historic Genealogical Society, Genealogical Publishing Company, and others would be prohibited from publishing that information again in any of their online or printed works. In fact, private individuals would similarly be barred from publishing the information in their own derivative works. If a commercial site publishes a fact about your ancestors, you would not be able to place that fact on your own Web site or in any book or report that you give to others. The language in this proposed legislation contradicts the core principle of the present copyright acts, which state that mere information and ideas cannot be protected works. You can read more about this proposed legislation in Wired News at http://www.wired.com/news/print/0,1294,62500,00.html This is not a hoax. You can see the original proposed legislation at: http://www.aipla.org/Content/ContentGroups/Legislative_Action/108th_Congress1/House/hr3261.pdf Be sure to copy and paste both lines of the URL into your browser. I printed out the entire 22 pages of the document, and it is as described below. Please write your legislators to point out the flaws in this bill, and the unintended consequenses should it be passed.
