Rare list found that names N. C. slaves WILLIAM L. HOLMES Associated Press RALEIGH - A renegade census taker charged with recording the population of a rural county in 1860 left behind a rare record of slave names. The find by a state archivist researching his family background stunned historians and genealogists who routinely find slaves listed only by gender, age and color -- black or mulatto. Listing the names of slaves violated census regulations of the time. The handwritten Camden County record includes the first names of the slaves owned by each family. Under the entry for farmer A.P. Cherry, for example, Bell listed the names of 16 slaves -- ranging from 55-year-old Moses to 3-month-old Enoch. The letter "S" is written beside each name on the 19-inch-by-15-inch yellowed ledger paper, which has the header "Free Inhabitants." The names are not listed in the official federal index of the 1860 Census. "We see a lot of things here at the archives, but there are very few things that make us stop," said Earl Ijames, an archivist for the state Department of Cultural Resources.

Fennell, for many years a resident of Butler, has passed on to the silent majority; one more veteran of lost cause has joined his comrades who preceded him to the better land, and there will be one less at the next gathering of hoary-headed heroes who meet annually to live over again those dark days of 1861-65. He was ready to go and the last few days of his life he repeatedly asked his Lord to take him home. For five years he suffered, the end coming Tuesday May 4th at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lula L. Glaze at the Dalton home in Columbus. All that science and love could do for him was done, but 71 years of joy and sorrow had worn out the old body and with his children and grandchildren around him, he crossed over. He was a good man and loved by all. After he was stricken five years ago with paralysis his many friends did not forget to call on him and for all he had cheery words and wise counsel. B.F. Fennell was born in Lee County, Alabama in 1844; with his parents he moved to Taylor County in 1848. In 1861 he joined Findleys artillery at Macon and served till the end of the war. In 1867 he was married to Miss Lizzie L. Hamilton who preceded him to the great beyond in 1913. To this union were born five children Mrs. Lula L. Glaze, Mrs. Ida Morris, Mrs. Vishie Booth, Mrs. Lizzie Livingston and one son, Wm. F. Tennell, all of Coumbus. A number of grandchildren in Columbus also mourn his loss. Mr. Fennel moved to Columbus from this place in 1884, where he was in business most of the time. This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 2.1 Kb
How many of you have census info that you've gathered for your own research? Even if it's a couple of lines share it with us. Remember one of your "researching" cousins may be looking for you, so leave them some clues. Oh yes, if someone wants to volunteer to transcribe census records, you wouldn't hurt our feelings. All the info on both the Chattahoochee and Muscogee County web sites (as all of the web sites in the USGenWeb project - which provides these email lists) was gathered by volunteers, just like you and me. kemis ----- Original Message ----- From: Virginia Crilley http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/muscogee/census/1880/bozeman.txt Also if some people do want to use the "forms" that is OK too.
