The death cases among colored people where causes of death was [sic] assigned were as follows: “Ava WILSON, organic heart disease; Infant of Larua GRANT, fever; Willie JOHNSON, LaGrippe; Anna L. HARDAWAY, meningitis; Warren DORSEY, pneumonia; Marietta DAVIS, consumption; Infant of Harriet WRIGHT, pneumonia; Harriet LEWIS, LaGrippe.” The “Columbus (GA) Enquirer-Sun” newspaper, Thursday, 20 FEB 1902. LaGrippe is an old term for influenza (the flu). Consumption is now known as tuberculosis, or TB. I am not related to any of these individuals. I came across this item while researching an unrelated matter. I would be very interested to know if such death certificate records are still on file with the city/county government in Columbus, and for what dates they were maintained.

The discovery was made by Bob DAVIS, a negro. The body was floating on the surface of the water at the time. It was not so badly decomposed as had been supposed would be the case, the extremely cold water having acted as a preservative. The body was given burial by one of the colored undertakers. “The body of one of the negroes drowned by the overturning of the flat boat has not yet been recovered. Three men were drowned, and one of the bodies was recovered the next day. A reward of $10 had been offered by the Columbus Power Company for the recovery of any of the bodies, and this amount was paid DAVIS yesterday." The "Columbus (GA) Enquirer-Sun" newspaper, Tuesday, 18 FEB 1902, p. 2. The North Highland dam was completed in 1902 (see KYLE's "Images," p. 104). The Bibb Mill had been established in 1900 at North Highlands, which at that time was the area north of town between Columbus and the defunct Clapp's Factory. I am not related to this family. I came across the item while researching an unrelated matter.

All rights reserved. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/copyright.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/gafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Janet Sumner http://www.rootsweb.com/~archreg/vols/00011.html#0002510 June 4, 2004, 11:55 am The Cairo Messenger, Friday, March 14, 1919 Mrs. C. A. Mauldin Died Here Friday On Friday morning, March 7th at 8:20 o'clock as the sun persistently burst through the low-lying mists of the day before and shone out in all its magnificence, Heaven and earth met in a little cottage of our town and God's voice spoke and called home to glory the spirit of Mrs. Clara Angeline Mauldin. Mrs. Mauldin was born in Muscogee county, Ga., on Feb. 7th, 1852. She moved to Thomas County as a girl. She was married in Thomasville on November 9th, 1873 to Mr. Benjamin Wyatt Mauldin, who was at that time a young school teacher of that county. They resided in Thomasville for two years after their marriage, moving then to Cairo. In the passing away of Mrs. Mauldin, we give up one of our old landmarks, and also one of our best loved friends for who of us, the young and the old alike, have not felt the personal touch of this good woman in one or more of her many forms of attack? Her life, though simple in the extreme, has been characterized all through the years by its steady upward trend. She has been noted for her charity, her hospitality, her independence, her industry, her cheerfulness, and complete surrender of self, making in the one the well-rounded Christian character as we all knew her. If we are ever to profit by another's example, we feel free in saying that hers would be one worth of study and emulation. Her bright face is gone; she goes in and out among us no more, busy with her daily tasks. We miss the voice, rich with its words of cheerfulness, but the influence of her life will always be felt among us. With a sweet simple service at the grave, her pastor, Dr. J. A. Wynne, of the Baptist Church, assisted by Rev. W. C. Jones, her body was laid to rest on Saturday morning aside that of the faithful husband, who had preceded her by thirty years. Mrs. Mauldin leaves to revere her memory, five children, J. L., with two sons, James and Therodore; C. E. with one son, Hugh, and three daughters, Marifrank, Clara and Barbara; B. W. with one daughter, Martha Jene; Mrs. W. T. Coleman of Crestview, Fla., with one son, Walter, Jr., and Miss Hattie Mauldin of Cairo.
