While researching I found there is a tie to Muscogee County in this story. While in the prison camp at Milledgeville, Leo Frank's throat was slashed by an inmate from Columbus named Creen. Frank survived the throat slashing and was hung about a month later in Frey's Gin, in Marietta. I read where Franks shirt was covered in blood from the reopening of this wound when he was hung. WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 14, 1906 COLUMBUS POLICEMAN BEING TRIED FOR KILLING KIRKSEY, Columbus, Ga. February 13,-- (special) A.J. Buchanan, until recently a patrolman of Columbus police force, was placed on trail in Muscogee superior court today, charge with murder, and all day long the legal battle which is to determine whether he shall live or die has been waging. Afew week ago Buchanan shot to death Morgan Kirksey, claming that the latter had been trying to ruin his home. Kirskey had been boarding at his residence on North Highlands, and Buchanan had ordered him to leave the residence and never return, He returned there two or three days later, and Buchanan, who was at home at the time, shot him to death. In trail today Buchanan was represented by Attorney T.T. Miller while Attorney A,A. Carson has been assisting Solicitor Gilbert in the prosecution. The state contended that the killing of Kirksey was not warranted by the circumstances. The police force of the city raised a fund and defray the expenses of the trail. The evidence is all in the Buchanan case and it will go to the jury tomorrow.
