    3. The oldest "Female Orphans Asylum" was started in 1840 by the women from St. Luke's Methodist Church. Today it is known as The Anne Elizabeth Shepherd Home, Inc. Their site: http://www.twincedars.org/pages/aeshome.html Also try archives at Columbus State University. As they have vertical files on the home (I'm not saying it contains the info you need. . . but maybe a clue.) http://archives.colstate.edu/verticalfiles/generalvertical.shtml kemis ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] Surnames: Kelly, Kelley, Hudson, King Seeking information on the Muscogee Female Orphans Asylum. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Harvell, Harville, Harvill, Nix, Wall, Tooke, Bloodworth, Maloney, Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Xd.2ADE/1554 Message Board Post: I am trying to piece together the Harvells who were in Muscogee Co GA. I descend from Susan E. Harvell who was born 18 Sept 1833 in Upson Co, GA. She married Jesse Wall 22 Sept 1850 Muscogee Co GA (he was son of Jesse Wall and widow Sarah Tooke). Susan died 30 May 1911, Marion Co GA, buried at Union Baptist Church Cemetery. Possible sibling is: Ann Harvell, who was born ca 1829, GA, married Edward Nix, 7 July 1846, Muscogee Co GA. He was a moulder per census records. In 1850 census they were in Montgomery,AL and in 1860 in Mobile, AL. Children: Charles, William, Ela, Emma. Other possible sibling is Samuel B. Harvell, who was b ca 1825 in GA. He married Martha Ann S. Nix, 15 May 1845, Muscogee Co GA. Martha died 22 Nov 1862, Columbus GA and Samuel B. died 3 April 1861, Columbus GA. Samuel was a printer, as shwon in 1850 and 1860 census. Children: Andrew, John B., James W., Samuel B., Edward. Only Andrew and Edward survived as far and the 1860 census - what happened to the children after the deaths of the parents? BTW the Martha Nix and Edward Nix were brother and sister - children of Thomas and Edy Nix. There was Weston Harvill/Harvel in the area - famed for his slave sale fraud in the Columbus area. Muscogee Superior Court Case October and December 1838 he is called Western Harwell convicted of selling a free negro and the negro escaping, with Weston reselling him several times over. He was imprisoned from Jan 1839-Jan 1848 for simple larceny - pardoned 5 Oct 1847. He was a grocer, and was 5'11-1/2" tall, a grocer who was married to Martha "Nancy" Bloodworth in Jasper Co 11-21-1824. May have been the same person as Western Harwell who married Tempay Maloney 12-20-1863 in Columbus. Also in this court case was William Harwell who was sentenced for 6 years, and pardoned after 8 months. He was b ca 1814 - 5'9" tall. Land owned by Western Harvill was sold at public sale in 1838 to William Harvill. Same William Harvill was of Cobb Co GA when he sold land in 1847. Also in area was a Andrew Harvill who was vice president of Temperance Society organized 1 Aug 1829 in Columbus. Andrew is name of first child of Samuel B. And, finally there was a James Harvell who was in area in early 1840's. He sold a lot of land and a Confectionary on it to Mary Ann White in 1841 - then apparently married her in 1843 as a marriage agreement was recorded. He also sold the remains of the Steamboat Tallapoosa lying on the east bank of the Chattahoochee River opposite the city of Columbus to William McAlister in 1842. James is the name of the third son of Samuel B. Harvell. Are Samuel, Ann and Susan siblings? Is James a sibling of theirs? What about Andrew, is he their father? Thanks, Trish Elliott-Kashima

    2. Kemis Massey
    3. Hi all, From the review that I received today. . . this could effect you. Please read the bill and act accordingly. kemis * * * New Bill Will Close Records to Genealogists HR10, which was mentioned in the 13 October issue of RootsWeb Review, has passed out of the U.S. House of Representatives and is now part of S.2845. The amendments suggested by David Rencher in his letter to the bill's sponsor, Congressman J. Dennis Hastert, were NOT incorporated into this legislation. Thus, the terms of HR10 will now be considered by the Senate, as part of S.2845. If S.2845 becomes law, as now written, family historians will face some real challenges in attempts to obtain birth records, even on long- deceased individuals. Specifically, what genealogists need to do is suggest to their lawmakers the addition of Sec. 3061(b)(1)(A)(iii) that would read: "who is alive on the date that access to their birth certificate is requested." This addition would clarify that the legislation (soon to be law) applies ONLY to birth certificates of CURRENTLY LIVING PERSONS. If you do not know your U.S. Senator's e-mail address, you can find it at http://www.senate.gov/ This bill can be found online at http://thomas.loc.gov/ Put in S.2845 (in the bill number window) and then select item No. 3; and go to Subtitle B--Identity Management Security; Chapter 2--Improved Security for Birth Certificates. * * * REPRINTS. 3. This was forwarded to me by a researching cousin. . . Do I hear 2nds? kemis ALL I want for Christmas .......................is it true words!! Dear Santa: Don't bring me new dishes; I don't need a new kind of game, Genealogists have peculiar wishes; For Christmas, I just want a surname. A new washing machine would be great, But it's not the desire of my life. I've just found an ancestor's birth date; What I need now is the name of the wife. My heart doesn't yearn for a ring That would put a real diamond to shame. What I want is a much cheaper thing: Please give me Mary's last name. To see my heart singing with joy Don't bring me a red leather suitcase. Bring me a genealogist's toy; A surname, with dates and a place! Anonymous

The kind-hearted officer went out to the cemetery and upon seeing the woman he found her to be Mattie PATILLO. He began to question her and found that she was very sick and not drunk, as was supposed. Not wishing to lock her up, Officer NEWSOME hired a hack and sent the woman to her home on First avenue, just above Thirteenth street, at the KIMBROUGH house, a family well known to the police department. It seems that after reaching home the woman continued to get sicker. About midnight she was found to be in a dying condition and medical aid was summoned. After an investigation, it was found that she had taken about twenty-five cents worth of morphine, with suicidal intent, it is thought. Her condition was beyond all human skill and at about 8 o’clock yesterday morning she breathed her last. The KIMBROUGHs stated to an o! fficer that they went out to the cemetery with Mattie PATTILLO, and left her there later on. It is said that her motive for taking the poison was due to despondency brought on by continued sickness.” [From the “Columbus (GA) Enquirer-Sun” newspaper, Sunday, 10 JUL 1898, p. 3.
