There are no McElrath's in Murray Co in 1860 or 1870. I searched Hertage Quest by first names for James, Jas, and J. and found no unusual spellings that fit. There is a J. J. McElrath in 1860 in Gordon Co that is 23 years old born in SC, but different wife and kids than you listed. What year was he born and in what state. Maybe that could help find them.
