Although I have been working on my genealogy for some time, I have just recently joined the mailing list and thought I should at least explain my roots in Murray Co. Apparently my 3rd Great-Grandfather was one of the early settlers of Murray County. I found him on the 1832 Murray County Census as HOH of 9. Right now, I am not certain of where he was before coming to Murray County. It is possible that he was in Habersham County since I found an Elijah King on an 1830 Census with a wife and 5 children. As of yet this is just speculation. In any case, Elijah seems to have been a respected man of the county. He was a blacksmith by trade, and in both 1837 and 1839 he served as a Pettit Juror. Elijah King and his first wife Catherine Deal had at least nine children before Catherine's death about 1842. The names of the children I know are as follows: Elizabeth b 1825, Sarah b. 1826, John J. b 1828, Mary (Polly) b. 1830, Moses b. 1834, Martin b. 1836, Elisha b. 1837, and Hiram b. 1838. After Catherine's death Elijah married Nancy Ledford in Murray Co on Jun 9 1842. It is believed that Nancy was the daughter of Absalom Leadford from Murray Co. Elijah had 3 more sons with his second wife Nancy. Their names are James M. b. 1843, Thomas Jefferson b. 14 Feb 1848, and Leonard Columbus b. 1854. I am still researching all the families of these children and also the origins of Elijah King and his second wife Nancy Ledford. Evidently Elijah lived a hard life because by 1860 he was dead. His wife Nancy continued to live in Murray County in what appears to be Spring Place. By 1870 her oldest son James M. was married to a woman named Caroline and had 2 children, Eliza J. and Charles. Nancy and her youngest son Columbus lived in the house with them. Nancy's middle son Thomas Jefferson lived two houses down. Thomas Jefferson King married Lucy Ann Deal from neighboring Gilmer Co. and started raising their family in Spring Place. They had several children, some who continued to live in Murray County others moved on. Their children are Mary A. b. 21 Jan 1866 who married John Park from neighboring Polk Co. TN, John Elijah b. 1869, Moses b. 1872, John b. Feb 1875, Nancy b. 1876, Lulu b. 1878, James Madison b. Oct 1879 who married Eliza Beard of Murray Co., Lilly B. b July 1881, Cora E. b. Mar 1883 and Dora T. b 2 May 1886 and died as a child 9 Oct 1890. By 1880 Thomas Jefferson had moved to nearby Polk Co., TN. Even though I can only find them in the next years in Polk Co., I believe they must have moved back and forth from Georgia to Tennessee. My grandmother was born in Crandall in 1914 and her older sister was born in Cisco in 1911. My grandmother talked fondly of her early life even though her mother died while she was very young and moved to TN to live with her aunt. Just last spring, I took my mother to Tennga, GA to find the gravesite of her beloved great aunt Mary King Park. I found that many of these early Kings are buried in Liberty Baptist church Cemetary in Tennga. The church is still operational and I had a chance to talk with some of the members. I got a little history of the church, but didn't get a chance to speak with many of its members. I hope to make a trip in the future. If you have anything to contribute or any information on the above listed Kings, please feel free to contact me. Cindy Willmot Eufaula, AL --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!?
