The Rev. James Strawn is a different James. That James was born about 1805 where the James I am looking for was born about 1830 according to the 1850 census for Murray Co., that listed him and his wife and at that time two daughters. Thank you , though. Jan, Amanda was the daughter of James M. Strawn and his first wife, Lucinda Cross. I have no information on any of Lucinda Cross's family other then the family she had with James M. Strawn. They had five children all born in Murray Co. before James left Lucinda , remarried and left the area. These five children were Amanda E. Strawn ( b. 1848 ), Nancy Jane Strawn ( b.1850 ), William Erwin Strawn ( b. 1852 ), Margaret M. Strawn ( b. 1855 ) and George Washington Strawn ( b. 1858 ). I find no ref to a Mountaintown in the index; I sampled a few of about 30 pages for Williams but these were later dates-and those I read were not connected to a church. It appears that the old Baptist church was a school in which church services were held, but with the appearance of HolyCreek, the name of the district was known as Holy Creek. ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Hi, all I am looking for my great great grandparent's families. James M. Strawn married Lucinda Cross 6 Dec 1847 in Murray County, Ga. James left Lucinda and Georgia before the 1860 census and Lucinda left before the 1870 census. Both wound up in Texas. The dates on Lucinda (Loucinda) 's gravemarker lists her date of birth as 20 Aug 1829. The 1850 census for Murray Co listed her birthplace as Alabama, but on the 1860 census and the others following, has Georgia. The only dates that I have for James is his birth was about 1830. I believe that he may be the son of Jackson Strawn, and if not, related. They were all living in the same area during the 1850 census. I am also wondering what happened to one of James's daughters ( Amanda ) that stayed behind in Georgia marrying Joseph J. Hampton on 6 Oct 1886 there in Murray Co. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, Vickie Strawn Davis
Is there any reference in the old church book to the Baptist Church in Mountaintown (Gilmer Co) at about the same time that had William Williams as the first pastor? -----Original Message----- From: blp374@juno.com [mailto:blp374@juno.com] Sent: Monday, January 07, 2002 3:06 PM To: GAMURRAY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MURRAY] Strawn and Cross Families located in Murray County 1850's and prior There are several Strawn's in the Murray co Heritage. Vickie, Your James Strawn is listed in the Murray Co. Heritage Book, I don't have the book but he is listed with My Edward McAbee in the story of the Ft. Mountain church. Will copy part of what was sent to me. "The following brethern met according to request. Elder James Adams, Edward McAbee and James Strawn. After Prayer by Bro. Adams, they formed themselves into a presbytery and called on the petitioners to present their letter, whereupon the following brethern and sisters came forward" They formed the Holly Creek Church. My Edward McAbee is listed as a Baptist minister in the 1850 census of Murray Co. I am also interested in the Strawn family as my G-G-Aunt, Martha Louisa Hess, married William David Strawn June 5, 1851 in Murray Co. Does David fit in your tree? I suspect he was related to James, due to living in that same area. I've not posted my information for quite a long while, so here goes: Searching for any info re James McGhee (1834, 1840 Murray Co censuses, 1896 Memoirs of GA) and wife Mary Couch (by name,1850 Murray CO census). Particularly interested in proving or disproving the relationship of John M (1850 McDonald CO MO census) and Ambrose McGhee to each other and to James and Mary. They are believed to be the sons of James and possibly of Mary. Proven children of James are Burton, James Monroe (who is buried in Murray CO), Albert, Larkin, and Elizabeth. The two youngest, Albert & Elizabeth were born TN 1830s, John, the eldest, and Burton in NC. Now to other business. Several of us researching this line are planning a trip to Murray CO in mid-March. I know about the historical society which has James' will, marriage and burial info on James Monroe, marriage info on Burton, and other interesting information. Interested in places to stay, other places of interest to visit. Any thoughts, help greatly appreciated. Hi, Bill. You still here? You'll note that I've come around to your way of thinking on this. Hi, I am new to this list. I have just recently found a marriage reference for Elija Farr and Martha E. Mitchell in Murray, Georgia for February 17, 1861. I have been told that both are from Bradley County, TN. Although I have found Martha Fair (Farr) in Bradley County, TN in 1880, and Polk County, TN in 1870, I have never found Elijah. The census for their children: Alonzo Theodore Lee Fair b. 1869, Orleanor Fair b. 1866, and Walter Fair b. 1879 indicate that both were born in Georgia. Apparently, Elijah died by 1879 or 1880, but I have never found a record or grave for him in Tennessee. Martha and the children moved to Texas after 1883 and I have some info on her in Texas where I live. Lee Fair was my Great Grandfather. If this family matches any of your families or if you have more info to share, I would greatly appreciate it since I have been searching for more than 4 years for Elijah. The marriage reference on FamilySearch.Org is the only hint that I have that he actually existed. I just found it on New Years Day! A great day indeed! Thanking you advance, Jeanie
