Nancy, are you any relation to the following Holland's Joseph, John Henry, William, Bessie
Can someone help? I have a copy of a marriage license for James LEDBETTER and Celia MACHEM or VA_CHEM (very hard to read), Murray Co, GA, issued 27 July, 1830 and returned 3 August, 1838. The Index for Murray Co, GA marriages lists her as Celia Machem ?. Could VA_CHEM be a Native American name? Family tradition states that Celia was Native American. My ancestor, Celia Ann Susan Elizabeth BLACKWELL, born ca 1822, married a ____Ledbetter and had a son, J Marion Ledbetter, b ca 1840, GA. ____Ledbetter probably died, because Celia Ann Susan Elizabeth Ledbetter married James Worley in 1846 in Chattoosa Co, GA. By the 1850 census James and Susan Worley were living in Cherokee Co, AL. Could the bride in the above marriage have been my Celia Ann Blackwell, using an Indian name or maybe she had been married before marrying the Ledbetter. I have yet to determine the parents of Celia Ann Susan Elizabeth Blackwell. Perhaps she was descended from John Blackwell who moved to Walker Co, GA ca 1830 from Rutherford Co, NC. Thank you, Georgia Walsh

No, I don't know Grace Brown's address or, for that matter, I don't know if she is even still living. I do have, however, her daughter's married name, which is rather a rather unusual one and led me to think I'd be able to find her. If you have the address, I'd be very pleased. I think Grace has played hostess to *many* McGhee descendents as they come through town. Always pleased to know new McGhee cousins, Nancy, and to have whatever data there is about them. I am not a "completist" when it comes to generalogy, but then again, I never turn anything down. Someone, someplace, might have a picture hanging around their house. One of James Monroe? One of Ambrose?? Would you like to be on my newsletter list? On my McGhee group mail list? Have access to the McGhee private website? Just let me know! Copying this to my cousin, Else (her grandfather, my grandmother were siblings), who is interested in all things McGhee and is a tireless and diligent researcher. Hello, cousin! (or cousin-in-law, as the case may be). My grx3grandfather was James McGhee, grx3grandmother Mary Couch. They settled in Spring Place in 1834 and were the parents of James Monroe McGhee, m. Mary Amanda Cleveland. Their children were John (unproven child), b.1805 NC, Burton, b.1811 NC, Ambrose (unproven, my grx2grandfather) b.abt 1815, James Monroe, Albert, Elizabeth and Larkin. I say "unproven" because, although there is considerable anecdotal evidence that John & Ambrose were sons of James & Mary, they are not mentioned in his will and we've yet to find the relationship documented. As it happens, I am putting together a brochure to be distributed to my family mail list inviting whoever wants to come to attend a mini-reunion we are planning in Dalton the end of March and mention in it the graves of James Monroe and Mary Amanda. Any additional information you have on the McGhees greatly appreciated! Someone recently asked me about the "Murray County Heritage" book. At that time, I didn't know if there were still copies available. For those interested, Whitfield-Murray Historical Society (aka "the archives" or "Crown Gardens & Archives") does still have copies of the book. The books are on special right now, but that's only until the last day of February. Contact info. for WMHS is: 715 Chattanooga Ave. Dalton GA 30720 (706) 278-0217 Web page: http://www.geocities.com/wmhs1976/WMHS.html (WMHS is a non-profit organization) For those who haven't seen the book, I have a copy of "Murray County Heritage." That one, and also the "Official History of Whitfield County," were both researched and published by the local historical society and privately printed, so they are more detailed than those books that are done up by out-of-state publishers. Unfortunately, I can't offer to do look-ups in the MCH, because it is indexed by last name only (time-consuming). I wish I could. Also, for people who have asked me about the chenille history in North Georgia, WMHS does offer tours of Hamilton House (museum of chenille cottage industry), but only by appointment, and possibly only for groups. They just don't have the funds available to keep it open full time as yet. Visit Southern Muse: http://www.southernmuse.com

Hello, I am new to the list, and any information anyone can help me with, will be greatly appreciated. I was born and raised in Murray Co. in the Cisco Mountain's. My father's name is Calvin Silvers. His father's name was Charlie Luther Silvers, married to Ina Mae Carroll. Charlie's father's name was William Jackson Silver, married to Martha Jane "Mattie" White. Mattie White Silver's parent's were David White and Sara Elizabeth Hughes. David White at one time was Postmaster on Doogan Mountain. On down the road from their house, his wife was Postmaster. Can anyone tell me why both, man and wife, was Postmaster near the same place ? Their house stood on top of Doogan Mountain. The spring is still there next to the road. Can anyone help me with any info. on David White's Ancestor's and his wife Sara's Ancestor's ? The Hughes family, I think, was from somewhere in TN. The White family, I have no idea. Any help would be grateful. Thank You in advance. Note: The Silver or Silvers name was originally spelled, Silber, it is a German name. My Immigrant Ancestor, Jurg Silber came to PA, from Germany, and lived in Maryland. In English his name means, George Silver. He had a set of twin's, boy and girl, named, George and Elizabeth Silver and later a son named Jacob.. George was in the Revolutionary War. He received a Land grant in NC. The Silver Ancestral home still stands there today in Kona, NC. George Silver's son John, who married Mary ? migrated to Gilmer Co. GA in the 1840's or early 1850's. He had a son named Thomas Jackson Silver who married his first cousin, Mary Mira "Polly" Silver. They lived at Cisco, at the foot of Doogan, Mountain. Thomas's son was named William Jackson Silver who married Mattie White, the subject's I am inquiring about. I don't know which one of my Ancestor's added the s to Silver, but I remember my grandfather, Charlie, telling us children that an s does not belong on the name Silver, so, I too! k it off of my Silver name. Thank you for listening. Carolyn Silver Sutton
