    2. What newspaper was available to the public for the years 1880 to 1910 for the Murray County area? Have these old papers been put on microfilm and if so where can you locate a copy of the film? Thanks Mary E. West

    1. [MURRAY] Vacations and Reunions
    2. Paula
    3. Just wanted to let everyone know that I will be out of pocket for a while. Taking in a family reunion and doing some research on my own family while on vacation or so I hope. Will see what I can pick up for my counties here in Georgia while I am at it. If you have submitted info to one of my counties for posting and it is not yet online please be patient just a short while longer and I will try to have it up very shortly after I get back home. I have a lot of new stuff posted on the sites but did not have time to update the search engine on the sites so the new stuff can only be hunted out manually. Please feel free to visit the site and fill my mailbox up with addtional info for posting while I am gone. I love it and love genealogy and love all my volunteers that contribute to the sites so other researchers can benefit. YEA!!! http://www.rootsweb.com/~gamurra2/ Thank you, Paula murraykin@yahoo.com

    2. Bill Williamson
    3. My Grandfather John Ball Williamson was born in Gordon County in 1850 and moved to Springplace as a small boy. He married Mary Farmer and bought a house lot in Springplace in 1872. Is there someone who could check the 1870 and 1880 census records for information about him? I am particularly interested in his occupation. Any help will be greatly appreciated. 2. Dear Miss Nicholson, I noticed you are researching Bates Surname. I found a little confusion with my Great Grandmother's name. Her name was Martha Robins. She married James C. Henton. The Bates geneology had a Martha Robins married a James C. Henton. I found this was not correct. I guess there were two Martha Robins, the one that married into the Bates family married a man by the name of Anderson. They moved to Montgomery County Arkansas. I was just wondering if you had heard anything about the Martha that did marry James C. Henton. I also am trying to find information on my Great Grandfather Benjamin Franklin Jackson (Frank). He lived in Spring Place. He married a woman by the name of Green. I cannot find what happened to her but I know she gave birth to my Grandfather in Waverly Tenn.

    3. Yes, both of those addresses you mentioned are still valid--I didn't mean to mislead. What I meant was that people shouldn't use the old rural-route address from the earliest editions of the book. Someone recently asked why their book has a different address, Rt. 3, etc. That old-style route address is from the first edition and is no longer a valid address. dkp ----- Original Message ----- From: Tom Carter <tpcarter@swbell.net> To: <GAMURRAY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, July 18, 2002 9:04 PM Subject: RE: [MURRAY] springplace ga > The Whitfield-Murray Historical Society is located at 715 Chattanooga Ave., > Dalton, GA 30720 > (706) 278-0217. 329 Hwy. 225 S. is Tim Howard's home address. 2. There is a consolidated index for Confederate soldiers from all states, which major libraries should have. This will only give the name and company and regiment and state from which he served. Info on Georgia soldiers is in the Georgia State Archives and the National Archives. I would try Georgia first. Give them the name and probable place of enlistment. They charge for a copy of the official record. Do not know what it is now, but it has gone up tremendously in the last few years. Information varies, but sometimes gives a physical description of the man. Virginia Alexander, Columbia, TN

    3. Dear Folks, Miss Pritchett is right about the Chief Vann House. It is a very small corner of Highway 225 and Hwy 52. Our county is known for the rich heritage. The Chief Vann House is a grand house in which to see but Murray County has other grand places to see also. My family lines are pioneers of Murray County and in which names that I am searching: Bates, Terry, Latch, O'Neill, Bright, Cash, Edmondson, Ledbetter, Roe, Buffington. 3. I just got a big surprise and laugh when I tried to find the "Chief Vann House" and museum in the phone book and through directory assistance--not only is "Spring Place" non-existent where the post office and phone directory are concerned (a fact that all of us locals know), but the site itself is not even listed under "Chief Vann House" in the white pages or under "Museums" in the yellow pages. No wonder people on the list are so confused! Here it is (under "Historical Places" in the yellow pages): Vann House State Historic Site 82 Hwy 225 W Chatsworth, GA 706-695-2598 So there you go, guys, it's not a myth--it really does exist. Like any state dept. or site, you have to go around the world and back to find the correct name and listing. But please, folks--it's a small site--probably no more than one to three attendants at any given time. Don't call with genealogy questions. I don't know if that's the proper mailing address but it looks okay; if so, the zip code for Chatsworth is 30705. Books on the Chief Vann House and other historic subjects related to Murray and Whitfield County can be bought in several places: Whitfield-Murray Historical Society (Dalton, Georgia) sells historical publications for this area. Chief Vann House, located in Spring Place (community), Chatsworth (postal/phone listing), Georgia has a new museum (not large), and I think the gift shop will be located there now--used to, they had a table set up in the Chief Vann House with a few gift books. The museum only recently opened. A good time to visit Spring Place would be during the upcoming festival: 5th Annual Spring Place Community Festival "Focus on Quilting" Sat., Aug. 17, 2002, beginning at 8:30 Quilt displays, crafts, music, baked goods, home-canned jellies and preserves, collectibles, used books, flea market, and auction of goods donated by local businesses. I don't know if the Chief Vann Museum will be open--I'll check if anyone needs to know. It commemorates Spring Place's heritage and raises funds for the continued preservation of the Old Spring Place Methodist Church (built 1875, oldest structure designed for public use still standing in Murray County), demonstrations of the county's new electronic-voting equipment. Festival contact info: Ruth Cox: 706-695-2722 Nancy Parker: 706-695-2380 Tim Howard: 706-695-2740 ----------------------------- Contact info for Whitfield-Murray Historical Society: Tim Howard Whitfield-Murray Historical Society 329 Hwy 225 South Chatsworth, GA 30705 Marcelle White (exec. secretary) Whitfield-Murray Historical Society 715 Chattanooga Avenue Dalton, GA 30720 706-278-0217 That second address is the headquarters of WMHS, located at the old Crown Gardens and Archives in Dalton. Other nearby historical attractions: New Echota (historic site, museum/gift shop/library featuring Cherokee history in Calhoun, Georgia). It is a restoration of the historic capital of the Cherokee Nation. Red Clay Museum (in S.E. Tennessee, below Cleveland, Tenn. and above Cohutta, Georgia--small museum/gift shop and park) It is the second capital of the Cherokee Nation, I believe, after the Cherokee left New Echota. Red Clay, like many parks, is having difficulty surviving since the economic crunch--they've had to cancel some of their festival activities, I think. There's a historical tunnel, recently restored, in Tunnel Hill (Whitfield County) Georgia--eventually to have a small park, as well--not terribly exciting (just a historical spot) but does have some interesting C.W. history behind it. All of these places are within 30 minutes to one hour's travel of each other. My own mailing info. is: D.K. Pritchett P.O.
