Hi Tom, I have the Murray County Heritage book, I couldn't find any connection with the name's you sent. I am looking for a James Callahan/Calahan, son of John Callahan in Gilmer, then Dawson County. James born 1830 married a Malinda Howell about 1858, daughter of Pinkney Howell of Murray County. I have found James in 1850 in Gilmer living with his Father & Mother, then I found Malinda living with them in 1860 in Dawson Co with a year old son by the name of William, NO JAMES. Then in 1870 I found Malinda living in Murray Co. with three children, William born 1859, Mary born 1862 and James Thomas Callahan born 1867 (my ggrandfather) NO JAMES. I have tried the civil war records, so many James Callahan's, that I don't know which record to go for. Looks like he was living yet in 1866. I haven't located a death record of him either. Any information on this James Callahan would really be nice. I have run into a dead end. Thanks, Louise ldens@baysat.net
The Murray Rifle Co. was Company C of the Eleventh Regiment Georgia Volunteer Infantry. According to my book, the Eleventh Georgia was involved in the following Campaigns: The seige at Yorktown(the Peninsular Campaign in Virginia) March 17-Sept. 2, 1862. Engagement at Dam No. 1 Lee's Mill> Seven Day's Battles (Peninsular Campaign) 6/25-7/1, 1862 (Garnett's Farm) Rappahannock (Campaign in Northern Virginia) Thoroughfare Gap August 28, 1862 (Campaign in Northern Virginia) Second Manassas (Campaign in Northern Virginia) Antietam (Maryland Campaign) Sept. 17, 1862 Fredericksburg, Virginia (December 13, 1862) (The Fredericksburg Campaign) Gettysburg, Penn. July 1-3, 1863 (The Gettysburg Campaign) Chickamauga (Chickamauga Campaign)Aug. 16-Sept. 23, 1863 Operations in Charleston Harbor (Sept. 1-Dec. 31, 1863) Fort Loudon (The Knoxville Tennessee Campaign)11/4-12/23, 1863 The Chattanooga-Ringgold Campaign 11/23-27, 1863 Operations in Kentucky, Southwest Virginia, Tennessee, Mississippi,North Alabama and North Georgia (10/20-12/31, 1863 and 1/1-2/29, 1864) Campaign from the Rapidan to the James River, Virginia (early May, 1864) The Richmond Campaign The Appomattox Campaign (March 29-April 9, 1865) The Eleventh Georgia surrendered April 9, 1865 at Appomattox Court House, with the Army of Northern Virginia. As you can see , many of the dates overlap. This is due to various of the units or Company's being under the command of other various Commanders and Units. Louise, there are three mentions of Callahans in the Murray County Heritage book: 1)Betty Jean Callahan (pg. 169) 2)Gayle Callahan Bean (pg.384) 3)Russell Callahan (pg 703) m. Martha Rogers Any of these fit? There really isn't a whole lot of info on any of them. As to the Howell's, there are quite a number of references to that name. Which ones are you looking for? and I'll see what I can find. Do you have any more information on Isaac? Such as wife's name, children's names, father & Mother, brother's and sister's? I checked the cemeteries listed in Murray Co and no Isaac McCamy there. Lots os McCamy's though. I am still checking, just thought you might have a little more info. Also, Try writing the Whitfield/ Murray Historical" address and ask for his death record, they have some marriage and death records there, I got my ggrandmothers marriage from 1880. More later, Louise
Thank you for the information for the talc mill, Louise, and Happy New Year! Sheila, The "Murray County Heritage" book on page 397 says, Empire Talc & Lumber Co. (1916) owned by Farrars and then J.T. Dillard (1928). Later became the Moraine Box Company (out of Dayton, Ohio) Fort Mountain Lumber Co. (1934) replacing the Box Company's work at Empire. George Miers was manager and R.L. Killin was superintendent. Most likely Gold. Don't think there was ever much found in Murray, but in 1830s all of "Cherokee Georgia" was considered prime Gold country. Gold rush long before 49ers. Please some help, it has been said that there is a Rufus M James married to Martha Glass on the 1850 census. There sould have one boy and a girl. Hopeful of two things one this that they are living next to or close to William & Nancy James. Thanks for any help. Terry
I agree that William "Long Bill" Caylor married Rhoda Jane Dunn. We must be the same line. One interesting note on my line is that my mother, Annie Lee, was a "Dunn" and my grandmother Moore was also a "Dunn". Dunn's on both side of my family, go back to ggggrandparents and they are all the same. Caylor's and Headricks are all through my family history. It would be interesting to talk. I'm sure we have alot of the same information. Kenneth E. Moore Jr. moor@alltel.net
Kenneth, That is also my family line but I show Mary married twice (which may be an error) to JJ Mullings and Benjamin J. Mullinax. Do you know anything about this? Then my line to Mary's brother Levi who married Emmeline Lackey and had my great grandfather Wm, Robertson Caylor who married Estella Shields. I have that Mary's father was William "Long Bill" Caylor who married Rhoda Jane Dunn. Is that correct? If we are the same line. I would like to talk to you more and swap some information. Let me know, thanks. Debbie Caylor Davis
