My great grandfather Wm. Roberson Caylor b. 1866 was married to Estella Shields and I believe that her grandmother was Margaret Emert who married Robert Shields SR. So it is very possible that they sold property to a Wm. Caylor. Wm and Estella had lived in Murray County and ended their lives living off the Alabama Highway (Ringold GA) Catoosa County area.
The University of Georgia has most GA newspapers on microfilm. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Vwalexander@aol.com> To: <GAMURRAY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 22, 2003 6:29 PM Subject: [MURRAY] Re: GAMURRAY-D Digest V03 #14 > Does anybody know where and how to get microfilm of Whitfield Co. > newspapers? > > Virginia Alexander > > > > > ==== GAMURRAY Mailing List ==== > --- Author Retains Copyright --- > -- Copyright 2003 Author -- All Rights Reserved > Post to List: GAMURRAY-L@rootsweb.com http://www.selfroots.com > Unsubscribe request To: GAMURRAY-L-request@rootsweb.com > ARCHIVES: http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl > >
If your interest in the newspapers is obituaries, you can pull up the last three or four years of them online at the Daily Citizen News website. They have a section entitled advanced search which holds their archives, you go to that section and it will let you pull up more than just the current days news. http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?Brd=1866 Paula
Thanks Paula, That would be great. Louise
Louise, They have them but if they are for sale I do not know about it as of yet. I go there to get copies of obits quite a lot. I will ask next time I go. Sorry, I prematurely hit send on my previous reply and failed to complete this paragraph: [continued]... Originally, I used "'The Connection' in East Tennessee" as my sole source for William (H. or Mathew) Headrick's parents as Jacob and Mary (Polly) Rice Headrick. Since then, I have found Murray County land deeds showing that Jacob Headrick sold the North half of land lot 57 (10th dist., 3rd section) to William Headrick. In another deed, heirs of Jacob and Polly Headrick (both deceased), including heir, William Headrick, divided the SW corner of land lot 87 in the 10th district, 3rd section. [This land does later end up in the hands of my W.A.L. Headrick--so I think we have traced the lineage correctly.] These heirs then "sell" their portions to Jacob Headrick (this would be Jacob, Jr.) in 1885, who in turn sells it to W.T. Caylor in the same year. This might be a clue for you, because deeds were often recorded in order to take care of the red tape, apparently, when deeds had actually already changed hands between family members upon decease of the parents. In other words, you might want to look for W.T. Caylor in census and other places, and see if he is any relation to your Mary Caylor Headrick. There's another deed that might be helpful to you in providing documentation that John E. Headrick is the son of William: Murray Co. deed record book S, p.449, deed from William Headrick Sr. to John E. Headrick in 1900, transaction for one dollar, for the NW corner of land lot 57, 10th dist., 3rd section. I absolutely can't find that deed copy right now (I think it was recorded much later than it changed hands, so I may need to look back at the older deeds). According to my notation that I took from the deed, William refers to the natural love and affection that he has for his son, and also reserves water rights for the use of Mary C. Headrick and children. That's about all that I have, but these documents seem to suggest that the book I used earlier (TCET) was fairly accurate in the lineage record, in spite of discrepancies in the middle initials. Also, I think the W.T. Caylor lead is worth checking. I hope some of this is helpful. dkp --- Vicki Yates <vryates@hotmail.com> wrote: > John E. married Polly Caylor. Hi Virginia, Here is a link to the site on how to obtain the rolls of microfilm. http://www.libs.uga.edu/gnp/titlelist.html The have a list of all the available newspapers that they have on microfilm if you hit the search button and then under cities search for Dalton which is the county seat. Vicki, I'm sure that we are discussing the same individual. I have John's father down as William M. Headrick, because his son (WAL's) death certificate lists him as William M. Headrick. Also, I have an old photo, the caption of which refers to him as William Mathew Headrick. Both of these sources mention Mary C. Emmert/Emit. "'The Connection' of East Tennessee" (book) lists him as William H. Headrick, I know. I don't know if someone misread the middle initial, or if he had additional given names. The picture of our William Mathew Headrick is on my FTM website. To view it, go to Southern Muse ( http://www.southernmuse.com/ ) and click on the link: Families of North Georgia and Alabama. Scroll down and click on the link that says "William Mathew Headrick, born c.1825." Have you found him listed as William H. Headrick in any documents, or only online? Originally, I used the above-mentioned book as my sole source for William (H. or Mathew) Headrick's parents as Jacob and Mary (Polly) Rice Headrick. Since then, I have found Murray County land deeds showing that heirs of Jacob and Polly Headrick (both deceased), including heir, William Headrick (should be our William H/M Headrick) divided the SW I have nothing on Mary Caylor (John's wife) except the marriage date and location. --- Vicki Yates <vryates@hotmail.com> wrote: > John E. married Polly Caylor. Does anybody know where and how to get microfilm of Whitfield Co. newspapers? Virginia Alexander
Does anyone know how I can find a Georgia STATE census for 1855? I am looking for a census during the time period of 1852 - 1856 to find William Franklin Montgomery and wife Laura Ann Jones listed with children Octavia, Leona B., and Martha in Murray Co. GA. Leona might have alternate spellings, like Leonia or Leoner. Thanks, Lee Anne
Hi, Does anyone know if the Georgia Historical Society has published a book with Georgia births prior to the offical date the state started maintaining birth records? I just learned on an Arkansas list that the Arkansas Genealogical Society published a book with Ark. births prior to 1902 in it. A CD is also available. Thanks, Lee Anne
Correction: it is Martha Weir as Ken Moore wrote earlier.
My documents have Emmeline Lackey (daug of Wm. and Nancy Weir) born about 1845 in Greene TN married to Levi Caylor (son of William "Long Bill" John Caylor and Rhoda Dunn) on 02-01-1843 in Murray County, GA. They married on Dept. 10, 1865. I have a copy of their marriage certificate which I got at the Murray, CO Courthouse. (I also have a poor quality photo of them) they were my g,g, grandparents. My line then goes down to their son William Roberson Caylor 1866 who married Estella Shields, and had my grandfather Charlie Albert Caylor born 04-06-1891 who married my grandmother Ollie Mae Cathey (daughter of Wm. T. Cathey and Mary Patty) who had my father Sidney Phillips Caylor born 08-27-23 (now deceased). My line includes, Dunn, Caylor, Patty, Lackey, Shields, Cathey, Mize, etc. You may contact me directly to share information at LRD1558@cs.com (Debbie Caylor Davis)
John E. married Polly Caylor. John's father was William H. and mother was Mary C. Emert. This is about as far back as I have gotten. John and Polly's daughter was Sarah Jane who married David Black. There have been some recent references to the LACKEY family. Does anyone have a C.A. LACKEY m. to Georgia Elizabeth Addie FORD 12 May 1887 G.A.E. Ford b. 5 Feb 1854. Parents Rufus K. FORD and Martha McSWAIN. George Henderson Gadsden, AL
Thanks! Annie Lenora Whittle (m. James Floyd Dunn) was the daughter of a woman named Jane Lackey (m. William Henry Whittle). Do you know if Jane was closely related to the other Lackeys that we've discussed? I had not researched Lackeys at all until very recently, when they started popping up in various lines of mine, but with their relationships to each other unknown to me. The computer has made it easier to discover related individuals this way. I have one other family of Lackeys to tie into the main line: Samuel Small Lackey, William T. Lackey, Katey Mae Lackey, and Lela Lackey are siblings born in the late 1870's and early 1880's. I haven't been able to attach them to parents. Do you know if they are offspring of one of Emaline's brothers? Katey Mae's children were friends of my great aunt, and Samuel S. Lackey married a distantly related Peden; otherwise, I think I only researched them on a hunch that they might be part of this same Lackey family that married into my Pettys, Dunns and Caylors. dkp --- Kenneth Moore <moor@alltel.net> wrote: > Emmeline Lackey (b-4/4/1845 d-??) Kenneth, Thanks. I had slightly different birth/death dates for Lizzie: b.13 Apr 1876, d.20 Aug 1954, but she does seem to be a completely different person than Eliza Caylor Headrick.
