    3. There are no McElrath's in Murray Co in 1860 or 1870. I searched Hertage Quest by first names for James, Jas, and J. and found no unusual spellings that fit. There is a J. J. McElrath in 1860 in Gordon Co that is 23 years old born in SC, but different wife and kids than you listed. What year was he born and in what state. Maybe that could help find them. I am fairly certain that James McElrath and his wife (either Catherine or Candis) and children (William, Hiram, John B.) were in Murray County in 1860 and 1870. I am subscribed to Ancestry.com, but they are not even on the 1850 census index there, yet I have found them myself (p. 293A) there. If anyone has access to a more accurate index for 1860 and/or 1870 than the one at Ancestry, would he/she be willing to look them up and give me the page number where I can find them? 3. If there is an index to 1800s newspaper obituaries, could someone please check to see what male Jones deaths occurred between 1840 and 1850? His eldest child in the 1850 census was born in GA. His wife was Ann K. Jones (50; NC). She and two daughters [Laura A. (19, GA) and Martha E. (16, GA)] are in the 1850 Murray County GA census. They are living between Hiram Montgomery and John Davis. With her are two daughters, the eldest of which is 19. Both were born in GA. Lee Anne

    2. There is an 1860 index for both Murray and Whitfield, but I find no Robert. However, there is a W.R. Long in 1860 Whitfield , family number 467. I only have the index, which the Historical Society published some years ago. Virginia Alexander

    3. I looked it up in the 1850 census in Ancestry.com, and the only Robert Long I found was in Coweta County, District 19, Robert L. Z. Long, age 30, a physician, born in Tennessee. He was married within the year. There was a William R. Long in Murray County, District 63, age 25, farmer, born in Texas. Looks like he is single. Page 160 That's all I found. I guess Georgia isn't indexed in the 1860 Ancestry database. 3. Ladies and Gentlemen, The "Official Military Atlas of the Civil War" is available at many libraries and is a useful tool in research. Their two maps mentioned are pretty good but the level of detail will not really supply the level of detail of finding individual houses unless the house still exists or it was near a natural of man-made terrain feature that still exist and you can orient from. You can find the book at the Chattanooga Public Library and I think the Dalton Public Library. The book is meant to be the companion volume of maps to the "Official Records of the War of the Rebellion." I hope this helps. Respectfully, Gerald D.
