    2. Cathy Tipton
    3. I have Springplace, GA listed on my gr.,gr, g'ma's death certificate as place of birth on April 19, 1839. Her name was Angeline Margaret Hargis, and this is about all I know, other than she moved to Arkansas with her family at an early age, and then was married April 1860, Madison Co., AR. My suspicion is that her father died (or maybe divorced?) while still in GA and her mother remarried Drury Walls in Cass Co., GA. on March 12, 1843. Drury Walls was listed on the 1840 Carroll Co. census, and 16 households below was an Elizabeth Hargis, (2 females under 5 yr, 1 female 20-30, 1 female 60-70). In the 1850 Cass Co. census it shows Drury and Elizabeth Wall. Drury and Elizabeth then show up in the 1860 Madison Co., AR census, thus my suspicions. Does anyone have any information about a Hargis in the Murray Co. area, or maybe can steer me in a direction to go to determine who Angeline's father was?? Cathy

    3. Dear Ms. Seltzer, The reason so many people left Northwest Georgia in the years immediately following the War Between the States was because of the economic and political conditions during Reconstruction. Eastern Tennessee and North Georgia were largely divided in its loyalties during the war. Following the war, Unionist often sought retribution against those that had Secessionist loyality. Many examples can be found of assassinations, rapes, murder, robbery, and other intimidation acts. As a result, people left by the wagon train load to settle in Arkansas, the Indian Territory (today known as the state of Oklahoma), and Texas. Many of the descendants of these men and women can be found today in the Fort Worth-Dallas area and outlying areas. I hope this helps and please let me know if you have any questions. Gerald D. 3. Hi Annabel, It's Judy not David. I'm the one doing genealogy. All I can tell you is Dave's grandfather, when I met him in the 60's, said they wanted a better life is why they came to Texas. He said they walked part way. I don't know about that because they did have a train in the middle 1880's according to a lady in Whitfield Co. who did a lot of our research. This gentleman was close to the end of his life and did have a lot to say. I'm just so sorry I never made notes. Unfortunately 40 years ago I wasn't into genealogy. I spoke to another elderly family member several years ago who remembered her grandmother from Dalton, GA. and she said they brought some furniture in a covered wagon, then crossed the river on a barge and took the train the rest of the way. All of the Murray and Whitfield relatives owned land in Texas just as soon as they settled. 3. Dear Mr. Bowman: I have just returned from Murray Co GA and did find a number of interesting things I did not know. Most of my ancestors left Murray County prior to 1885 and it appears they were all gone to Texas by that time. My ancestor settled in McLennan County and later wound up in Falls County when that county was organized. Do you know why so many Murray Co residents left for Texas? I know that my family had followed land grants all the way from Virginia, but I am not sure why they came to Texas. 3. Mary, it's been such a long time since I responded to your inquiry, that you have probably forgotten that I said I would look for my records and get back to you or you have gotten the information somewhere else. At any rate, I have finally found my records of the John B Gordon Camp. There is a list of the members (two lists , actually, although they may be the same) and O. C. Goins is on both lists and is shown as having been in the Lookout Artillery. I have several pages of information, including their Constitution and minutes from their meetings. I got the information from the Whitfield-Murray County Historical Society, 715 Chattanooga Ave., Dalton, GA 30720. (706) 278-0217. Marcelle White is the Director and knows a great deal about the history of just about every individual and organization in that area and has a great deal of written information in the society records. So, you can get the info from her or , if you'd rather, you can send me your snail mailing address and I'll copy my file and send it to you. My granddad , Stephen Goodson Carter, was a member and the Aide de Camp of this organization. He was in the First Georgia Regulars from Mar. 1861, until paroled in NC after the war ended in 1865. Let me know if you want me to send copies to you. Tom P. 1. [MURRAY] King/Beard Family in Murray County
    2. Cindy Willmot
    3. Although I have been working on my genealogy for some time, I have just recently joined the mailing list and thought I should at least explain my roots in Murray Co. Apparently my 3rd Great-Grandfather was one of the early settlers of Murray County. I found him on the 1832 Murray County Census as HOH of 9. Right now, I am not certain of where he was before coming to Murray County. It is possible that he was in Habersham County since I found an Elijah King on an 1830 Census with a wife and 5 children. As of yet this is just speculation. In any case, Elijah seems to have been a respected man of the county. He was a blacksmith by trade, and in both 1837 and 1839 he served as a Pettit Juror. Elijah King and his first wife Catherine Deal had at least nine children before Catherine's death about 1842. The names of the children I know are as follows: Elizabeth b 1825, Sarah b. 1826, John J. b 1828, Mary (Polly) b. 1830, Moses b. 1834, Martin b. 1836, Elisha b. 1837, and Hiram b. 1838. After Catherine's death Elijah married Nancy Ledford in Murray Co on Jun 9 1842. It is believed that Nancy was the daughter of Absalom Leadford from Murray Co. Elijah had 3 more sons with his second wife Nancy. Their names are James M. b. 1843, Thomas Jefferson b. 14 Feb 1848, and Leonard Columbus b. 1854. I am still researching all the families of these children and also the origins of Elijah King and his second wife Nancy Ledford. Evidently Elijah lived a hard life because by 1860 he was dead. His wife Nancy continued to live in Murray County in what appears to be Spring Place. By 1870 her oldest son James M. was married to a woman named Caroline and had 2 children, Eliza J. and Charles. Nancy and her youngest son Columbus lived in the house with them. Nancy's middle son Thomas Jefferson lived two houses down. Thomas Jefferson King married Lucy Ann Deal from neighboring Gilmer Co. and started raising their family in Spring Place. They had several children, some who continued to live in Murray County others moved on. Their children are Mary A. b. 21 Jan 1866 who married John Park from neighboring Polk Co. TN, John Elijah b. 1869, Moses b. 1872, John b. Feb 1875, Nancy b. 1876, Lulu b. 1878, James Madison b. Oct 1879 who married Eliza Beard of Murray Co., Lilly B. b July 1881, Cora E. b. Mar 1883 and Dora T. b 2 May 1886 and died as a child 9 Oct 1890. By 1880 Thomas Jefferson had moved to nearby Polk Co., TN. Even though I can only find them in the next years in Polk Co., I believe they must have moved back and forth from Georgia to Tennessee. My grandmother was born in Crandall in 1914 and her older sister was born in Cisco in 1911. My grandmother talked fondly of her early life even though her mother died while she was very young and moved to TN to live with her aunt. Just last spring, I took my mother to Tennga, GA to find the gravesite of her beloved great aunt Mary King Park. I found that many of these early Kings are buried in Liberty Baptist church Cemetary in Tennga. The church is still operational and I had a chance to talk with some of the members. I got a little history of the church, but didn't get a chance to speak with many of its members. I hope to make a trip in the future. If you have anything to contribute or any information on the above listed Kings, please feel free to contact me. Cindy Willmot Eufaula, AL --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? 3. Mike, Hi, my Berry family was in Tennessee in 1850, and in southern Kentucky in 1860. The earliest one I have is Green Berry, born 1804 in North Carolina. His parents were from Virginia (per 1880 census information). Green stayed in Kentucky, but had a fairly large family. I don't know much about any of his children except the one in my branch. Green's children were: John, b. abt. 1830, James, b. abt 1832, William, b. abt. 1833, Tabitha, b. abt. 1836, Asa, b. abt. 1839, Alfred, b. abt. 1841, Andy, b. abt. 1843, and Thomas, b. abt. 1845. I haven't done much Berry research. I don't know what happened to Andy, or if any of them migrated to Texas (or Georgia, for that matter). Tabitha, Alfred, and Thomas were in Kentucky in 1880 with Green, who was a widower by then. Asa's son Chester A. Berry moved west, first through Texas, then settled in New Mexico. He brought his brother Prentice and his sisters Jaysa and Lucy. He also had a brother named Vernon, don't know what happened to him. The reason they migrated was that they tended to die of Tuberculosis. Chester had T.B. and the doc told him he was going to die soon, so he left the wet climate and got well! If any of these names sound familiar to you, let me know. Jayme Berry

    3. This is all very interesting when it comes to Stone folk. I honestly don't know if mine connected with McElreaths or not. As near as I can figure it, mine are: James Stone of SC , who was the father of Wiley b.1803 SC , possibly a John and a George and a Johnathan and a James. Wiley was my ggf and he m. Candus Buckner. I suspect the land lottery drew them to GA from SC. I have the line pretty good from Wiley to date, but am still very sketchy on his siblings and his ancestory. Murray and Hall would be logical counties for them to have moved thru on the way to Forsyth by 1840-50 and Milton 1860 (though that was the same place, different name) Wiley's oldest child was a daughter, Ellender Stone, who appears on the 1850 Forsyth Co, GA census as Mrs Ben WILSON, living very near her folks place. Most Stones moved to the area of Blount Co , AL in time for the Civil War and 2 of his sons ( Wm P., my gf being one) wee in the 28th Ala Inf. Not sure where sons James and Wesley served. By 1866 they are on a Blount Co census and by 1870 they are mostly in Boone Co, AR where they stuck around until around 1900. I don't know of any who went to Texas, but it could be. ron At 08:14 PM 5/13/03 -0700, you wrote: >Jayme >I saw your query about your ancestors from Murray County.
