Do you know what the newspaper for Murray Co. in the 1880's would have been? My g/grandfather killed a man named Orr in 1881. I'v been trying to find out more information on it. Any ideas?. Jan Newman
Thanks you! I'll have to look into that. Actually, our government still "shoves" people off their land. If you have a piece of property the government thinks it needs, they condemn it, then take it. It is called "progress" but in real life, it is the same thing. We just don't kill them now. I know one individual whose farm dates back to the original land grants and his farm was in the way of a road widening and the house his grand parents built (this person is 80) was in the way. Guess what, it was condemned. They did let him have the house moved to another part of the farm but took what they needed. The point is, we cannot carry a grudge over something we had nothing to do with or something we have no power over. We live in a wonderful, free country. Enjoy it. I am hearing a lot of anger over something that happened a long time ago, not from you but several others. Hopefully, I took them the wrong way. I have Indian blood from both sides and I am proud of who I am. Let us get on with finding our heritage and be proud of the brave men and women who settled this country. I have just returned from Seattle (driving) and every mountain we came over and all the rough land, all I could think about was the brave pioneers and how proud we all should be of our forefathers. Thanks for letting me have my say so. Yes, I had found this. He was bn in Greenville, and his father James moved to Ga shortly after he was born. His grandfather was William. Spring Place had a newspaper in the late 1800's called the Jimplecute.
My G,G,Grandfather, was HenryP. Floyd of Murray Co. His father was Turner Floyd. I am trying to confirm wither or not the William Floyd listed on the 1850 census was Turners father. I am at a dead end until conformation is obtained. Any information on these persons would be appreciated.
I have no idea about a news papaer in Spring Place. Hey Jan, I am a Newman from TN. Would be interested in corresponding with you. Wanda
Wiley Stone was listed in 1840 census of Forsyth Co. (from Index by Barbara Woods & Eileen Sheffield, 1969) No Buckners in 1840 Forsyth, Murray or Cherokee.
Is your Holcomb the one that had the newspaper in Spring Place? Pat
You should be proud of you Cherokee heritage, James. I also have Native American heritage from both of my parents, but have no proof. Just stories that have been passed down through our family. My Wheat, Holcomb, Masters and Eubanks (Elaine and I are Eubanks cousins) lines were all in Murray County at one time. My Holcomb line is where I believe my Native American heritage came from. My family was the same way. We can't find the THOMPSON connection that would account for my gg grandmother's Indian connection, which may even be Choctaw, but I'm still proud of it and sorry for the prejudice that made them have to deny their heritage. Our EUBANKS line went from Murray Co., GA to Greene Co., AR and my gg grandmother Rachel THOMPSON married Chaste EUBANKS in Randolph Co., AR probably. Can't find a marriage record and just recently discovered her maiden name thanks to to 3rd cousin who found it in AR last year and who found her picture. I think her family may have been in TN. Chaste's parents went to CA to find gold. It just struck me that they may have been able to find some because of their experiences in northern GA. They were Drewry Alvin EUBANKS and Sarah AWTREY. I think they probably moved to AR with their proceeds from CA, about $1000 from what has been passed on through letters. The first gold strike in the US was in Cabarrus County, NC in 1799. Gold mining was big business by 1820 and did not fade out until the 1880's. The gold produced in the first years was sent to the mint in Philadelphia. Later, a mint was opened in Charlotte to handle the local gold and silver production. Dave Bright
ACTUALLY, THEY WERE "SHOVED " OFF THEIR LAND BECAUSE GOLD WAS FOUND IN THE NORTH GEORGIA NOUNTAINS. JAN NEWMAN
Well, actually it wasn't for the "sake of settlers", but for the sake of GOLD....Yes, the 1st gold stike in the US and location of the 1st US Mint....Dahlonega, GA...now the Administration Bldg. for North Georgia College and State University. The Cherokee sold the land to the US. There was a great deal of division among the tribe over this, of course, history is always written by the victors, so who will ever really know what happened. But, the purest gold ever discovered in the world is in the old Cherokee lands. cb ----- Original Message ----- From: <ChaseMonty@aol.com> To: <GAMURRAY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 03, 2001 6:02 PM Subject: Re: [MURRAY] Buckners > Murray was formed in 1832 - from the last Cherokee Land Lottery - when they > were shoved off their native land for "the sake of settlers" - In other words > we stole it from them? > > > > > ==== GAMURRAY Mailing List ==== > --- Author Retains Copyright --- > -- Copyright 2001 Author -- All Rights Reserved > Post to List: GAMURRAY-L@rootsweb.com http://www.selfroots.com > Unsubscribe request To: GAMURRAY-L-request@rootsweb.com > ARCHIVES: http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl >

Murray was formed in 1832 - from the last Cherokee Land Lottery - when they were shoved off their native land for "the sake of settlers" - In other words we stole it from them?
