Hi Jack, If you have time to do stuff, you don't have to hire anyone to help you find family lines. My brother has visited libraries and cities for about a year and traced both sides of family back to Germany and when both sides came over in 1600 and were even in the same state. What a co-incidence. I understand Dalton library gives you a lot of help. Jean Belew who does geniology in Bartow County can help you quite a bit. She writes for the Daily Tribune news and it is on line but I cannot remember. I am sure you can find it. Linda Cochran used to write for the paper but has quit. She is disabled and is not able to do much but she still helps lots of people. Both these people can get you started, just send a note to newspaper in Cartersville. Taylorsville is in Bartow as is Cartersville. Hi, I have wondered so many times what some of the stories of our ancestors are. If you find anything, just forward to Murray County. All of this is so interesting. My ancestors were Keisters and Hartsells. Does anyone know if the Murray County Heritage book has any info about the Nathaniel Ellis family or the family of Mahalia Phillips? I believe her parents were Nathaniel W. and Jane Phillips. Any info is appreciated. R Ellis
Hello all, I am trying to learn more about my husband's McElroy ancestors and other related surnames. I know that in l850 there were some McElroy's listed on the census that year and I believe that our Greatgreatgrandfather lived in Murray county prior to l848 as well but have not been able to locate him. John McElroy b. l797 Mecklenberg county,NC moved to Ga. prior to ending up in Arkansas in l848 and moved there from Ga. His Mother, Elizabeth McElroy a widow and a sister living with her were still in Murray county in l850; also, there was a couple of other familys there and they were Robert King with wife Mary (she being a daughter of John McElroy from a previous marriage) and with her was listed a Darling or D.B. McElroy who was another son of John McElroy. There were a couple of other familys that were related and they were William Stevenson who was married to a sister of John McElroy's but the sister had passed on prior to the census in l850. There are some Stevenson and Belk family connections in Murray county and was wondering if any researchers have come across any of these names and might help me with finding where they lived or what time frame they were in Murray county. There was a William Belk and family listed in l850 census and believe he might be a brother to Mary Belk who was married to our John McElroy at one time and who was the mother of the Darling or D.B. Mcelroy listed with his half sister Mary King in the l850 census. If anyone is researching any of the above familys would appreciate hearing from you and will gladly share what information I do have. Just trying to learn more about John McElroy from the time he left N.C. until he went to Arkansas in l848. He probably moved to S.C. then Ga. from N.C. sometimeabout l825 to l830 time frame. Thanks for any assistance and good luck to all in your own researches. Beverly McElroy grannymc8@qwest.net
Doris, I've checked through my copy of "Murray County Heritage" and find several Tate's, but nothing on Robert or Cynthia. There is mention of a Confederate Captain Tate and Troy, Clark, James, Howard and Jacob(1807-1888)Tate, but nothing further that I can find. Jack, you might check out Polk County, Tennessee since Bradley county is next door.. The copper mines in Copper Hill drew a lot of people from other places. There is a site for Polk County about the deaths. How they died or what illness killed them. A lot of the workers there came from Fannin County. Hope this helps. Thank so much for your insight DK. My g gf was born in Bradley Co, TN at Cleveland and may have had some relatives in Murray Co, possibly Fannin Co also. I find myself really as interested in the times and trials of my ancestors as I do their names, who begat who, and am trying to TimeLine some things ie Droughts, famine, diseases, etc. I think these events are often overlooked as to what influenced people who had to go through them. Some puzzles are pretty hard to resolve and I think if we knew what may have been going on when people did things like moving we may be able to gain more knowledge. Thanks again! Jack Milam
Jack, Just a guess here, but my info. may help other researchers: I had always thought that my Dad and most of the Pritchett clan had lived in Murray County all of their lives, and in the same few houses where they owned land. After all, they were in Murray in 1900 and still here in 2000. They are listed as landowners. My Dad would often point out the house his father built, and his grandfather's house. I assumed they'd lived there "forever." However, it turns out that they moved about frequently and lived in quite a few houses over the years after 1900. Some Murray Countians were sharecroppers. They moved from one farm to another within Murray County. They often called the new house and plot of rented or tenant land by the name of the family that had previously tenanted it (i.e., "the Pritchett farm," even though the plot was actually a small part of the large farm of the actual landowner, i.e., the Colvard Farm). Some of them even went down to Florida one year to get work and then moved back. Another year, they moved to Blue Ridge to join kinfolks there, and then moved back. Once they moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, and then moved back. I don't know how much of this was documented in census after 1920. My great-great grandfather moved from Gilmer Co., Georgia, to Kansas, about 1870 (after the census enumeration). Times had gotten hard after the Civil War. They went out to Kansas to find work and to join kinfolk who had already gone out in 1855 as early settlers. Part of the family, including great-great grandfather, moved back to Murray Co., Georgia. Great-greatgrandfather brought back a young son, Stephen Thomas Pritchett, who was born in Kansas in 1871. The birthplace is documented in Georgia census. Their move to Kansas wouldn't have appeared in census records if it hadn't happened that Stephen was born there. They returned before the 1880 census enumeration. Pritchett descendants out west have helped document the Kansas years for me, with land records, state census, etcetera. I think people moved more than we realize between census years, often returning to their old homesteads. Maybe the family you mentioned already had relatives in Murray County. Another possibility would be that they inherited a farm from kinfolk, came to Murray Co., resided a year or so, sold the farm, and returned to Bartow. Had any significant events occurred at that time, such as the death of a parent or grandparent? They may have had a difficult time financially if crops went bad--families sometimes moved in together when that happened. I have a similar situation where I find Winfield Scott Murray first in Union County, then in Fannin County, Georgia. Yet I find him on a tax list for Union County after the date that he was listed in census for Fannin County. But he was buried in Fannin County. So, did he move back and forth frequently, or did he own land that crossed county lines? (I first thought that he never moved at all, because Fannin County was formed out of a segment of Union County). Who knows? Land deeds might help. Dalton Library has some Murray Co. land records on microfilm, but you'd have to locate a genealogist to do lookups--the library doesn't have anyone on staff to do that. --dkp Visit Southern Muse: http://www.southernmuse.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jack F Milam" <byjacque@bellsouth.net> To: <GAMURRAY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 10, 2001 9:14 PM Subject: Re: [MURRAY] Murray Co. They were surely renting; or sharecropping may be a better word. One of my gf's sisters was born there but she is the only one of the children. The others were born in Taylorsville, Bartow county. Jack
Were they selling/buying property or were they renters? Bartow/Murray is not that far especially if they were renters. -----Original Message----- From: Jack F Milam [mailto:byjacque@bellsouth.net] Sent: Wednesday, October 10, 2001 9:14 PM To: GAMURRAY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MURRAY] Murray Co. Maury (pronounced Murray) Co., TN is about 45 miles south of Nashville, on US Hwy 31 and I 65. County seat is Columbia. It was established in 1807.
Our moreland people said they moved because of better weather and soil..
There is no Murray County, Tenn. Murray County, Georgia is next to Whitfield county (east of Whitfield). Chatsworth is in Murray county Georgia. D.
Chatsworth is the county seat of Murray Co. Ga.. Whitfield County borders it to the west. The Connasauga River forms the border. The northern border of Murray County is the TN state line. Does anyone know why a farming family would have moved to Murray county about 1895, from Bartow county? They then moved back to Bartow county about 1900. Thanks! Jack Milam
Chatsworth is the city seat in Murray County. I can tell you this because I live in Murray. Thank you all for your replies regarding Murray and Whitfield Counties. After all of these years of researching my Parsons family I begin to get places confused. Regards Rose
Whitfield County GA lies to the West of Murray County and is adjacent to Murray County . Chatsworth is the County Seat of Murray County GA. Spring Place was once the County Seat , but it was moved to Chatsworth. Spring Place and Chatsworth are adjacent to each other and you can hardly tell when you go from one town to the other , unless you live there and know the boundaries. I don't know anything about Murray County , TN.
