Hi Rose, I didn't want to get in the middle of your conversation with Robert, but I just moved to Athens, TN. I lived here as a child and I can remember the "Battle of Athens." In fact, my uncle was in the jail house that night and we were much concerned for him. I would really be interested in finding a book to read on the subject. Thanks, for any assistance. Wanda Mason
Hello, What was the context of the Ellis shooting, and what newspapers have you researched? If you can't find it in the newspapers, how do you know that the date is correct? I ask because my research examines, in part, violent crime in Murray County as part of a broader study. However, I arbitrarily chose 1914 as a starting point for that research. If the Ellis case is relevant I may push back that date to 1913. If you give me the details you have on the Ellis shooting, I will do the research. If you prefer, you can e-mail me directly rather than through the list. If anyone locates a newspaper before 1914 for Murray County, please let me know, My Grandfather, James Newport Ellis, was found shot to death by the railroad tracks in Murray County near Eton on Feb 23, 1913 ...surely that should have been in a newspaper somewhere but a 2 year search has turned up nothing. Apparently old newspaper records are at the University of Georgia (UGA) on microfiche, you have to actually visit UGA to review the files and gather information. ----- Original Message ----- From: <ljhan2319@aol.com> To: <GAMURRAY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, October 20, 2001 7:04 PM Subject: Re: [MURRAY] Re: newspaers > Hi: > "The Battle of Athens", Go to the McMinn Co. Hi: "The Battle of Athens", Go to the McMinn Co. TN. website on USgenweb. Quite an article. Would like to know more about the Newspaper in Springplace myself. Interesting to know they had Obits. If you find out anything please share it. Particularily where and who has the old records. Thanks a lot, keep up the good work. Jim Hansird
Hi Robert It has certainly been a long time. I hope your efforts with your paper have been stronger than mine with genealogy. I grew weary of it after all these years (a least 7) as it was becoming too consuming. I did, however, find some very cool documents in Salt Lake City; birth certificates for both my great grandmothers and the death certificate for my great great grandfather. Sadly, since they were from a small Sicilian village, Baucina, Palermo, they are written in Italian so I cannot decypher them completely. The Jimplecute was a newspaper in Murray Co. I think. I found obits from 1898 for Holden and Penelope Parsonsin that were copied from the Spring Place Jimplecute. I don't know how long it was in existance. If you find anything let me know. As usual I have been travelling and am writing to you from NYC right now. There are so many flags and shrines and altars around the city that I never know when my eyes will fill with tears. What is going on with your paper and school in general? Did you ever hear of a book called "The Battle of Athens"? I will try to be better about keeping in touch. Regards Rose

Put the information in the scanner. I have Photo Suite, depends on what you have. Once it scans say get photo, , then up will come a box as to where to get it from click on scanner, this is slow and will take time. It will appear on your screeen. Then go to the are of save , file or send, click there, up will come a box with about six ways to save, file or send. click on send. Pull down you file menu up at the top and click on send to . An email box will apper send it out just like a e mail. put the name on the top , subject line, eveything comes up no zips to open.
It doesn't work that way Dot. Simply scanning makes a picture of the document and you cannot edit it. It has to be scanned by a program capable of OCR (Optical Character Recognition). Jack Milam

If anyone has a scanner, all you have to do is scan the pages and put in word processing and from there it will be part of anything you want it to be. I have a scanner but I am not smart enough to do that but I am sure there is someone out there that cfan. It would be such a waste of time to do all that typing when you can just copy it.
