I am researching the Coleman family and the related lines that were in Morgan Co in the early 1800's. The family first arrived when John COLEMAN Sr. of Greene Co., GA bought Lot 28 in District 5 from Adam Brinson of Burke Co. There are records of John COLEMAN in Greene as early as 1786 and perhaps in Wilkes before that. No will was ever probated, but according to a deed to Joseph Reese of Morgan Co., the six legatees of John COLEMAN Sr., Thomas COLEMAN, William COLEMAN, John COLEMAN Jr, Executor, Jospeh Pate PENICK, Joseph MOORE and Grief LYNCH. It was dated Nov. 1824 so he died around 1823-4 and was buried at the homeplace on Bethany Rd. No marker is known at this time and best guess on DOB is 1755-65. The three daughters were Lucretia COLEMAN ([email protected]) who married Grief LYNCH (b.1786 VA) in 1819 county unknown and had eight children: Julia Ann b.1820, Mary Frances b.1822, John Coleman b.1824, James L. b.1826, Jones H. b.1828, Grief W. b.1830, Rebecca Moore b.1834 and William David b.1834. They live in Jasper Co. GA area and a couple of kids moved to TX. Lucretia died in 1834 and Grief remarried Nancy Rogers and had twelve more children. Grief came from a family of 34 in VA. Grief also served in the War of 1812 under Capt. Thomas Coleman and William Adams. Rebecca COLEMAN (b.1790 in GA) married Joseph MOORE in Morgan Co on 7-26-1812 and had at least five known children: John Coleman MOORE b.1813 Mahala MOORE, George W. MOORE, Elizabeth MOORE b.1826 adn Joseph K. MOORE. Her husband died in 1830 and she would later remarry James FEARS on 12-15-1838. James was the father of Margaret Watson FEARS who would marry John Coleman MOORE on 9-12-1834. I have information on some of Rebecca and Joseph's children. Martha COLEMAN (b.1802 GA) married Joseph Pate PENICK (b.1794) on 7-25-1822 in Morgan Co. There is a detailed history of some of Martha and Joseph's children in the Morgan Co. Heritage book. There children were as follows: John Charles PENICK b/d.1823, Lazarus PENICK b.1824, Frances Amanda PENICK b.1826, Lafayette b.1829, Eliza Jane b.1833, Troupe b.1835, Lucius Terrell b.1838 and Celestia Carolina b.1840. Only Lazarus, Lucius and Jefferson lived to adulthood and marriage. Lazarus went to AL and died in Three Notch AL in 1883. Lucius and Jefferson both went to TX and returned to GA where Jefferson died in the Civil War. Joseph Penick died in 1857 and Martha went to live with her oldest son Lazarus and died in 1872. She is also buried in Three Notch, AL. The three sons were Thomas COLEMAN (b. 1780-85) who was a Milita Captain for Dist 276 (Madison) and married Jane TRIMBLE in Greene Co. in 1805. He would eventually draw Lot 249 in the 5th Dist of Fayette Co and move there. One known son was James Coleman who would marry Catherine DRENNAN. There is only circumstancial evidence for this, and Thomas seems to disappear by the late 1830's. He may have simply died without a will. According to the 1830 Fayette Co. census, he was in the 40-50 age group which puts his DOB at 1780-90 range. I may have simply missed something on tracing him forward. I have several things on James and his family, but apparently a Patience COLEMAN of Morgan Co. is involved in a legal issue with Thomas Coleman. She is apparently the wife of James M. COLEMAN who married her in 1831 in Morgan Co. What is the missing connection? William COLEMAN (b.1780-90) is one of the stange puzzles. He wins Lot 84 Dist 5 of Walton Co. but is not on Morgan or Walton Co., 1820 Census. He does appear in the 1830 census. In 1828 he purchases his brother's land in Fayette after it is sold at Public auction and eventually sells it in 1837 and his own land in 1838. I have no further info on where he may have gone except AL. His 1830 household shows him with 3 sons; 2 ages infant-5 and 1 age 5-10 and no daughters. No name for his wife except that she was born 1790-1800. So he was at least in GA up until 1838 when he may have gone to AL. The above John Coleman MOORE had a Joseph COLEMAN (b.1832 in AL) living with him in 1850 Morgan Co. Joseph would eventually marry Sarah Elizabeth STOVALL 4-5-1851. John COLEMAN, Jr. is as much of a mystery. He was born before 1794. According to Morgan Co. marriage records, he marries Elizabeth WARE 4-13-1825. That would seem to put him as the youngest son, unless it is a second marriage. He appears in the 1826 Walton tax digests and court cases in 1827 with Robert Penick and Charles Trimble. But that is all i have form now. However, there were several COLEMAN families after the 1820-30 time frame that may have been Thomas' children or cousins. But two bear special meaning since they were included innotes writen in 1935 by a Penick descendant. Charles COLEMAN who married Caroline DOUGLAS(S) in 1823 and David Lewis COLEMAN, Sr. who married Mary DOUGLAS(S) in 1824. It would appear that brothers married sisters and that these two women were the offspring of Samuel DOUGLAS(S) d.1825 and brother of Francis, Thomas and William S. DOUGLAS(S). I have some information on these three Douglass brothers and where they went. But Joseph PENICK, John COLEMAN, David COLEMAN and Robert PENICK were appointed joint adminstrators and Joseph appointed guardian of Charles COLEMAN a legatee of the estate of Samuel Douglas. So who is this Charles, because the widow of Charles Coleman (Sr or Jr?) is keeping house for Lucius and Jefferson PENICK in TX. I know what happens to David Coleman's family and where they wind up. But someone would not mention these people unless there was a connection when the notes being taken are not even on this family, but know the intimate details of their families and speak in a present tense. I have alot on the PENICK line and am in touch with other researchers regarding the LYNCH line. I would like to find someone researching the other MOORE lines such as Benjiman Moore for a trace of Joseph Moore's family. I also am in touch with someone who is interested regarding David Coleman's line. I would like to share info with anyone who might have knowledge that is verifiable of William, John Jr or Thomas. Some other names of COLEMAN's in the time frame are Archibald, Samuel( whom I have a history of, b. 1853 NC d.1837 Meriwether Co., GA) Alford and Elizabeth, Daniel( who is most likely the Greene Co. one who married Clarinda Randle) James M. and Patience. I would like to know if anyone has anthing on these above individuals that might shed some light on there origins. Thank you for any help. Patrick A.J. Coleman
