According to the Kentucky Encyclopedia Walter Haldeman had been editor of the Louisville Courier before the War Between the States changed his allegiance to the Confederacy and had to leave the state. He settled in Madison, GA according to the Encyclopedia. According to family records, a Col. William Logan Clarke and his wife were with Haldeman when their son was born and he was named Walter Haldeman Clarke. There are discrepancies. The family records state that he was born in Haldeman's Army home in Warrenton, but the Encyclopedia makes no mention of military service. His obituary in the Louisville Courier- Journal likewise is silent on that point, although the obituary ran to several columns (he was publisher at the time of his death in 1902). Does this ring any bells? Thanks. Dave Sencer Atlanta, GA [email protected]
