Hi, I carry quite a few POWELLS but I do not generally associate this name with Morgan County, GA although I am sure they migrated there at some point. The same goes for the CALHOUNS. There are quite a few POWELLS that chase the WYCHE, MITCHELL, RAIFORD, BRYAN, SEARS and BLACKSHEAR families out of VA, then to the Richmond County, GA are and later into South Georgia, especially the Thomas County, GA area. There also appear to be links between John CARLTON family of Thomas County, GA and the Henry CARLTON family of Morgan County, GA. Regardless, the current long-time sheriff of Thomas County, GA is Carlton POWELL, so there may be links I do not know about. These families are generally around my DANIEL bunch but the only direct connection I have is to the John K. CARLTON (1775-1828) and Nancy ALDERMAN family of Duplin County, NC and later, Thomas County, GA. Their daughter, Mary CARLTON married John CHASTAIN (1798-ABT 1850) and their daughter, Sophronia Edna CHASTAIN (1839-1918) married Russell Ramsey RENEAU (1832-1962) in 1857. He was the brother of Mary Jane RENEAU (1830-1912) who married my GGF, Robert W. DANIEL, Esq. (1809-1865) of Bethany, Jefferson County, GA in 1852. Russell R. RENEAU owned the newspaper in Thomasville, GA before the CW and was killed at the Battle of Crampton's Gap, MD as 1st SGT of Company E, 50th GA VIR. Their parents were Rev. Russell RENEAU (1807-1865) a Presiding Elder in the Methodist Church, and Elizabeth STOCKTON (1808-1888), a descendent of the Richard STOCKTON family of Princeton, NJ. John R.
