I am looking for Joseph Calvin (or Campbell) RANKIN (b. 18 Apr 1816 UNK, d. 4 Apr 1871 Cherokee Co., AL), whom, it is believed resided in Morgan County, Georgia, prior to 1870. It appears he resided with one Robert Caldwell RANKIN, who married Elizabeth (Betsy) AKINS (1818 Morgan Co., GA), in Morgan County in the mid-1800s, but it is not known for sure if Robert was Joseph's father. Joseph married Mary Elizabeth GRAHAM (d/o Alexander and Mary [surname unknown] GRAHAM) before 1866, probably in Alabama. Their children were Robert Russell, Henry Emma, and Joseph Alexander. It is likely that this was his second marriage, but I have no confirmation of a first. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Please respond to neecamp@yahoo.com. Linda, It is funny you mention RANKIN and AL. I carry several RANKINS who were around various members of the DANIEL family which is my primary area of interest. David RANKIN married a Mary MOORE of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. She was the daughter of Hugh MOORE and Margaret FITZGERALD who later migrated to Chambers County, AL -- the same place that some of the FITZPATRICKS of Morgan County, GA also migrated to. The FITZPATRICKS are tied to my Morgan County, GA DANIEL-RICHTER bunch. The children of David and Mary married a B. W. JONES, John W. DANIEL, and a Mary P. -- all before 1860 but I have no other information on them. The CALDWELLS also interest me. I have a CALDWELL family that migrated from Somerset County, Maryland to Green County, North Carolina and then to Jefferson County, GA. The family of Spencer, Robert and Simon CALDWELL and I know there were collateral links between Burke, Jefferson and Morgan County, GA in my DANIEL family so I assume there may have been in other families. . There is a CALDWELL family that was collateral with the James CUNNINGHAM and Anne THOMSON family of Charlotte County, VA. Some of these CUNNGHAMS later migrated to Greene County, GA and are tied to one of the DANIEL families of Greene County -- the Cunningham DANIEL family. I do not think these DANIEL families were related and there were other DANIEL families in Greene County, GA. I get the sneaky feeling that siblings of some families moved into Burke and their siblings into Greene County, GA. Later, their children migrated into Jefferson County, GA and their nieces and nephews into Morgan County, GA. In other words -- when a family migrated to GA, they split up with some parts of some families moving into Burke County, GA and their siblings into Greene County, GA or that general area. They may have done this so as to facilitate the families overall claim to Revolutionary War land grants because Louisville, Jefferson County, GA was the State Capitol for about 10 years before the capitol was moved to Milledgeville, Baldwin County, GA. Or, a older brother moved to Burke, got the land grants for their younger siblings, based on their father's RS service, and their younger bothers later moved to Greene County, GA or that general area. As most may know, there was a lot of politicking in the acquisition of these land grants, especially the early ones..... John R.
