I Have 3 books from the swords bank from 1910 to 1951, these books were passed down through the family, There are many names in these books and the print takes some time to read. I will let you know if I find any thing else in these books, now that I know this is your family. Did you have the Merritt name on your list to find? Because My great grand mother was a Merritt from Greene County, The next county to Morgan. Maybe there are some ties to my family. I didn't find any in Merritts Swords. Jamie
Dear Jamie, What a treasure you have there with those books! I never knew there was ever a bank at Swords! Wonder if it would be possible to transcribe them for publication? I would love to help you with this if you are interested. My mother and two aunts were born in Swords on Shakerag Road. (My aunt told me the story of how "Shakerag" came to get its name. It seems that everyone in the community washed their clothes and hung them out to dry on the same day every week. The mailman would come by and say, "I see it's "shakerag" day.") Yes, I am related to the Merritts of Greene County. Two Lynch sisters married two Merritt brothers. Samantha Lynch ("Mankie," daughter of James Columbus Lynch and Martha A. F. Bryan) born 15 Aug. 1871, died 25 Oct. 1963 (burial at Walker's Church, Greene County, GA) married James T. Merritt, b. 24 Nov. 1868, d. 30 July 1958 (burial Walker's Church Cemetery, Greene County, GA). Mary Elizabeth Lynch ("Lizzie", daughter of James Columbus Lynch and Martha A. F. Bryan) born 24 Dec. 1877, died 1940; (burial @ Walker's Church Cemetery, Greene County, GA) married Gordon L. Merritt, born 12 Dec 1871, died 5 March 1957 (burial Walker's Church Cemetery, Greene County, GA) Please contact me directly @Mombear3@bellsouth.net and tell me about yourself and how you are related. I'd love to share information.
